NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Political Discussion Thread

Biden isn't great, but he is light years better than Trump. Although, it seems that we won't see Trump get what he likely deserves, he won't run again. It will be DeSantis v. Biden, or DeSantis v. Newsom (even though he is still denying he will run).

I see no R candidate but DeSantis actually making it to the top of their heap. It will be fun to watch him attack Trump once Trump stops being a kingmaker. They are already doing it behind closed doors, but when it starts publicly, it will be very fun to watch.

The D's also do not have a strong stable, but Newsom is looking more and more like he has a good shot. Harris is terrible and should not run. I have always loved Pete, but he may be too "Paul Ryan".

For our country being so grand, we keep coming up with poor choices for leadership. Trump vs. Biden would be a terrible election to live through again. Desantis and Newsom would also be a pretty dreadful election too. I can already see the ads now saying "do you want Nancy Pelosi's relative as president?" with dark ominous clips of Pelosi in the background.

I see a fair amount of "Don't California My South Carolina" here among the retiree crowd.
They don't know about being Californicated. Try living next door to that state. The best part is my BIL complaining about all the California people moving to northern Arizona (Prescott area). He came from California a few years ago.

I don't get the recent comments from conservative talking heads (Carlson and Kirk) about the Baltic pipeline explosion being a covert US operation. I don't know how that sits well with anyone, even those who want to give the middle finger to the current administration.

A. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for it to be a US operation.
B. I don't understand how anyone can look at what's going on with Russia and say "That's were I'm putting my efforts."

Both of those are kind of mind blowing.
A: The US needs to keep Europe united in supporting Ukraine. Cutting off the gas supplies is the one thing that has potential to divide Europe - why ever would we want to do that?
B: All I can figure is inertia. Like Trump decided Zelensky was the Bad Guy when he refused to submit to Trump's attempt at extortion, and because of the right's fealty to Trump that makes them their enemy too (and therefore, Russia their 'friend')?

Rank hypocrite

What are your thoughts about Biden's mental capacity? His asking about Jackie Walorski is just one example in a long line of things that make me wonder if he has a form of dementia. Even back in 2008 he told Chuck Graham to stand up and let people see him, despite seeing that he was in a wheel chair.

I know people flipped out when W would mispronounce things, so I am wondering of there is the same concerns with Biden.

ROFLMAO.

I don't think he has much mental capacity left. At least not what I expect from a president. If he runs in 2024 he is going to get crushed. It will be interesting to see how the D's handle this.

Remember a time when we used to say that person is to old to be president. When we actually thought about these things before we voted.

I'm 16 years younger than Biden and I fuck up my stuff from time to time, and nobody is worrying about my mental acuity.
Biden has always had slips of the tongue. Nothing new there. He's somehow managed to keep it together enough to build and keep a coalition of fractious partners to stop brutal Russian aggression.

I don't recall anybody worrying about whether W had early onset dementia or other problems. Just that his Ivy bona fides were more legacy than earned ...

Why I would like somebody else in 2024 for the Dems is simply that I'm tired of the old farts running the show: Time to step aside and let the younger crowd -- the folks that are going to have to deal with the worst effects of climate change -- to step up and take the reins.

Covfefe, anybody? Bowling Green? Frederick Douglass?

...so you are an armchair psychoanalyst? We have those in our family too but their ideas are not widely circulated.

100% all of this. Biden has always had gaffes but still able to momentum. But he, and Trump, are simply old men approaching 80 so when things go downhill, it's usually pretty fast.

Really???

Well, you did mention that you are only 16 years younger than Biden. So here is a reminder...

Well, fuck, maybe he's just another retard, like that former president that performs fellatio on QAnon?

(That was tongue-in-check. I guess I am tired of the memes going around suggesting how mentally deficient President Biden is. It's like a Republican gentleman's way of saying of "Fuck Joe Biden" without saying "fuck" all the while smiling like a Cheshire cat inside with the full knowledge that their former guy was worse, was beyond mental, was a race-bating white nationalist bigot that gave zero sharts about the little guys who actually voted for him.)

I think people thought Bush Jr. just wasn't that smart, not that he was suffering from decline. Might not too different.

I know there have been a lot of stories and discussion about Reagan having issues while in office and years before his official diagnosis. Those seem to range from episodes of forgetfulness to something more like "sunsetting."

I'm generally of the opinion that about 65 is the latest someone needs to be at the start of a term.

I'd prefer different candidates for the next election. If it comes down to it, I'll vote for the maybe senile guy who makes gaffes and is forgetful over the maybe senile guy who is likely to corrupt and willing to do anything for a buck or be a vindictive jerk.

To be fair, the right winged approach during the 2020 election was to claim he was "sleepy joe," but when he performed better than Trump during the debates, a bunch of random conspiracies came out (he had a microphone in his sleeve, a high tech eye-contact that provided a script, or he's an actor/imposter) to explain why he wasn't nearly as 'sleepy.' Same with the bike incident - look how old and feeble he is, ignoring that a certain other probably couldn't ride a bike in the first place. Not to say that mental acuity isn't important, and that we shouldn't be mindful of cognitive declines since it has happened to a president before, but some of it is just noise, too.

My dementia at age 73 is still rooted in the PTSD of birth itself. It remains a shore very far from me, luckily!

As we are all shipwrecked sailors floating toward firm land, I think I might have sighted something lately, but to quote Lou Reed, "...well I guess but I just don't know..."

I 100% agree with your perception of Trump. But it does not change who Biden is. Personally, I am tired of the BS "leaders" that the republicans or democrats keep putting up for president. They all suck and it is pissing me off.

I also find it funny that you used the word "sharts" given dropping the F bomb three times...

I think about this a bit and I'm not trying to single you out, but do you think there is a candidate out there that you'd actually like? I'm stuck and can't really think of one right off the top of my head. I've had a few over the years. Most at some point or the other have disappointed me. I think most politicians suck and most sane people don't want those jobs.

That is a phenominal question. My problem is I don't fit into the R or D camp and so many of them just follow party lines.

This is interesting because some of the information what was considered "Lies" early in the pandemic have been scientifically proven to be fact now.

It notes that statements when "contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus contrary to the standard of care," would be in violation. Let's think about science for a moment. How many times have eggs been "Proven" to be harmful to our health by the scientific community and reversed a short time later?

At one point it was a scientific fact that the world was flat and that the sun revolved around the Earth.

Although I guess this is political, keep the COVID misinformation in the COVID thread, no need to try and get more discussion on it in here.

The science is still amazingly clear on COVID, even though so many want to armchair expert it now.

The problem is that the conservative movement to delegitimize science and objective fact is now stronger than ever, and even really kooky "doctors" (like chiropractors claiming to fix illnesses by fixing your spine!, or witch doctors that will give you some moss, twigs, and ground up antler to fix your bloating!) which used to be clearly seen as kookery, are now being touted as equals to medical doctors or scientists with years of research, experience, and honesty.

Although I do think natural selection would win, I still don't think it is right that a medical group allow doctors to give Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin to patients, because it is clear that won't heal them. Their job is to create the best environment for outcomes, not to make someone who has no good reason to take medicine to take it. That won't stop people who want to do what they want to do, but it may save a life or two, which is why they have to take these stands.

How else do you claim that the government does nothing, but also claim that you voted against wasteful spending. And you get to be mean to others after a disaster that's not in your state.

Just think next time funding comes up for wildfires in CA or a hurricane or snowstorm in the Northeast, they get to spend hours on Fox and talk radio about how Florida went it alone and those blue states need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

I agree that there is information out there that is both wrong and dangerious (like Trump's drink bleach comment). But the great thing about science is that it is constantly being refined in the pursuit of truth.

Yep, science does change, when peer reviewed, studied, and confirmed by qualified individuals who go through educations to allow them to have an educated opinion.

Not because kooky doctors say it is so, was my point. But it seems we agree that the CDC, NIH, and other government agencies got it right with COVID generally, and were doing the best with the knowledge they had.

Then the democrats might want to find a good candidate. Because if it is Biden, we might want to prepare our selves for Trump's second term.

I will not vote for either of them, but I know more and more people who are fed up with Biden.
Who you vote for in Congress matters more than than who you vote for as president.

I'm far from a fan of either one of those guys but fundamentally I think they're right. If they were straight aid bills it would be much easier. But just look at any of these kinds of bills and there is always so much extra crap that gets included that's just ridiculous. And both parties do it and it's wrong. Just wrong.

I agree completely. And in this case, the science for how to treat COVID was coming out as a first reaction and wasn't always peer reviewed. Most of it was right and I applaud the scientific community for being so responsive in doing so. But how we treated those who questioned it, and have since been proven correct, is not appropriate. But this is nothing new. In the 1950's there were several medical doctors who expressed opposition to the findings that Ancel Keys put out in his 7 countries study and were shunned by the medical and scientific community, one was forced to retire. Today there is a ton of documentation showing that Ancel Keys got it wrong and ruined peoples lives thanks to his lies.

Who you vote for in Congress matters more than than who you vote for as president.
Who you vote for in City Council matters more than who you vote for in Congress.

Ian exposes messy politics of disaster spending

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ about-face on federal disaster aid is the latest high-profile example of this phenomenon. On his second day as a congressman in 2013, DeSantis voted against a $9.7 billion spending bill to aid victims of Superstorm Sandy, which walloped the Eastern Seaboard in the fall of 2012.

Spending government money is ALWAYS wrong, unless it is on things you want, then it is IMPARATIVE!

The hypocrisy of our elected officials is painfully clear. DeSantis is up there with his hot takes on about everything, and most of them making no sense, unless you look at it from a perspective of trying to heat up his base.

In the past week, I've received 4 text messages, 3 landline phone messages & 13 mailers all telling me how badly dangerous Cheri Beasley is to this state. Not one has told me what Ted Budd will do for the state.

The Rs are dropping serious money into NC.

Absolutely, like say on schools if only so that people learn how to correctly spell "IMPERATIVE"!

Kidding! I'm kidding. Sorry @Hink, it was too easy so I shot my shot. All in good fun. :D
