Do you think there is any republican that would receive any votes from democrats?

If not, I don't think they would be looking for someone who would compromise outside of their own party.
It all depends on circumstances. A "custodial" speakership would be viewed differently than something longer term. Dems would also look for certain commitments to move on certain policies, ensure a reasonable degree of influence, etc. But there's also a very strong recognition that the GOP's house is on fire, and only they can put it out. The Dems owe them nothing. There's a reason they didn't act to save McCarthy--McCarthy was incredibly ineffective as speaker. The GOP being unable to govern functionally will damage them severely at the polls--they need to fix themselves and figure out how to neutralize a handful of bad actors in their party.

At this point, I think there is benefit to a nonmember serving as speaker. Liz Cheney could probably get there with dem support. Mitt Romney as well. Jon Huntsman could be an option as well given his technocrat perspective. I actually think a former governor of some kind could be a good choice since it is like the House needs basic executive leadership to get/keep the machine moving like it is supposed to.

When the best best you have is Jim Jordan, literally anyone else on earth would do a better job.

When children are in charge, they throw a fit and want attention. The R's need to put an adult in charge, but they are unable to do that with the current position of the R party. People like Matt Gaetz get to control the House and make the R's look that much worse. If the R's had any backbone, they would have gotten moderate R's the win they needed by electing a moderate speaker. Instead they put up Jordan, which tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about their ability to actually govern.

Will they pay for it in November? Who knows, but the County is worse off, as the budget talks will be here before we know it, and our country is going to leap off a cliff without a functioning house. This is yet another embarrassment that used to have dire consequences, but in today's environment it will just be another "fake news" argument from the not-here-to-actually-govern portion of the republican party.

The MAGA-wing of the GOP is so adamant about 0 compromise and support from Dems, could the Dems just sabotage the process by voting for the most moderate of the GOP speaker candidates and getting them to be speaker for a few days until somebody like Gaetz or MTG or Gym Jordan or some other Trump-fanatic gets enough support to kick that person out of the speakership as well? Because how dare a GOP speaker accept any support from Dems or bring something to the floor that doesn't have majority GOP support!?! Hastert Rule be d*mned!

I guess it would just be interesting so see the MAGA folks exposed for the chaos agents that they are.

Not only that but any effort by dems to assist has/will be strenuously resisted. So, yeah, multiple fires are burning and the GOP would rather fight their civil war than help the country. They deserve to get shellacked at the polls, but with elections a full year away I am far from convinced that will happen.

He's officially out now, of course. However, this does present the opportunity for the GOP to consider someone new. Hopefully an experienced legislator who has worked hard over many years to build consensus, fundraise, and compromise in order to get the work of the legislative branch done.
This person does not exist in the GOP.

Yet another mass shooting, this one 30 miles from my house. Dozens of victims, and this is easily the worst shooting in state history. This guy is basically a highly trained, ex military Rambo type on the loose as of this moment. Schools all on lockdown across the region, etc. This is America in 2023, folks. Nowhere is safe.

BTW GA's nutso lt guv just pitched his idea to arm schoolteachers. By the same token, if I live in the US and own a firearm, I should get hazardous duty pay, verdad?

Officials said Card had mental health issues and recently said he was hearing voices. At one point, he allegedly threatened to shoot up the base where he was stationed. A New York National Guard spokesman said that on July 16 they received a report from leaders at the Camp Smith Training Site in Cortlandt. Card was reportedly "behaving erratically" at the New York facility. "Out of concern for his safety, the unit requested that law enforcement be contacted. New York State Police responded and transported Card to Keller Army Community Hospital at the United States Military Academy for medical evaluation," the spokesman said. Card spent two weeks at the facility and was subsequently released.

One of Card's cousins, Michael Mercier, told WBZ-TV Card has "a lot going on in his head" and called him a "schizophrenic."

Two thoughts that I have said before and will continue to say. 1) We as a nation need to do a much better job with mental health care. 2) We as a nation need to pass common sense red-flag laws that prevent people with a documented history of mental illness to access weapons.

As someone who is openly pro-life, I find this comment to be extremally offensive. I always thought you would be above that...

I don't think this is aimed at you. I think she's pointing out that Republicans push that they are extremely pro life at almost all cost, but refuse to address the two issues you put above it. You are making fairly reasonable statements that we need to address the situation. The Republican party might say they want to address it but they're not going to. More and more they just don't comment.

Not Mskies, I know he better than a one bucket political issue, but I hate "pro life". In the one bucket issue it's anti abortion, not truly pro life. If a person were pro life they would be anti capital punishment, pro social safety net, and so many other things that support people and life.

Also the speaker is a coward...it's too early to talk about it. Really? We're back to that one. Haven't we already established that these things are happening so often that it's always too early to talk about it. Get off you ass and do something. You're the speaker now. Do something. Hell, set up a committee to start looking into it.

In our metro area about a dozen yrs ago a mad shooter gunned down his wife, her lover, and a bystander and then hid his car on the edge of town, climbed into a shallow grave he pre-dug, then covered him self and shot himself. Took weeks to find him.
This dude may very well be dead already by his own gun.

This turned out to be the case in this instance. Certainly a harrowing few days in the meantime. What worst is that this will, without question, not be the last time this happens.

From a planning perspective, in my view, the mental heath/mass shooting epidemic is going to wreck folks' ability to want to to congregate in the type of third places that we espouse as healthy for a community's well being. There's a direct implication for how we use and inhabit public space inherent in this epidemic of mass killing.

This is so frustrating... it is not even like they are trying to hide what they are doing. Gerrymandering should never be legal.

Modern data lets them slice and dice down to the most "optimal" districts. The goal is to have as few people vote as possible. They'll get sued. They know their boundaries won't hold up to judicial review. The goal is to likely push the issue so close to the election that the court will let them use it for the next election.

At some point the courts are going to get REALLY annoyed by this and figure out how to rocket-docket these voter rights issues. The strategy is obvious and incredibly cynical even by D.C. standards. Until there's real punishment, like jail time for disenfranchisement, this shit will continue.

Maybe. But if it goes on long enough republicans can get enough judges appointed they'll eventually rule like the NC Supreme court that said gerrymandering is legal and constitutional.

The Rs have a super-majority in the Legislature and vote down vetos all the time. They have stacked the courts too.

This was not directed towards you personally. While you individually promote mental health care and red flag laws the GOP which self identifies as the "Pro-Life" party, it most certainly does not. If they genuinely cared about life, they'd get busy working on legislation to that end.

Apparently a Delta pilot drew his weapon - in flight - and threatened the the captain multiple times if he diverted their flight due to an incapacitated passenger. The co-pilot was armed after completing training as part of the TSA safety program post-9/11.

Because, you know, more guns in more places makes us all safer. Right?

It's not exactly new information.
I wasn't asking because I don't know what's out there. I was generally hoping to get your personal take on the matter. But hey, if you want to be a dick about it, point taken.

My personal take on it is that she ran to increase her profile to make it possible to get paid. During the debates and since, she has never had any serious or thought out positions on anything, just saying what would get clicks and sound bites. From everything I have seen, Russia is paying for her to act as a chaos agent and they are getting their money's worth. My response was a bit snarky and I'm sorry for that, I'm just used to other social media where people expect me to provide them easily found information and it caught me in a moment. Sorry.

Over the weekend my oldest and I were talking about the election this year (local) and the election next year. He is 14 and asked why the Democrats don't put another candidate up to run. He had just watched a news clip of Biden and commented how he looked and sounded super old.

I am just really sad at the state of our political system right now. More and more it is looking like it will be Trump v. Biden again. The question then comes about if Biden would make it another full term.

That's exactly where we are and quite frankly I don't see Biden winning. He does absolutely nothing to inspire confidence in anything IMHO. It's a huge mistake by the Democrats to just default to this particular sitting President.

I've always thought it was a mistake to default to the current pres. Run someone so they get some experience even if you know they aren't going to win. Maybe groom your party to have up and coming leaders.

The Trump/Biden thing is easy for me. Will Biden make it another four years? I don't know. Will I make it four years with Trump as pres again? I don't know. I'll take the obvious lesser of the evils.

Why choose the lesser of the 2 evils? Pick the greatest evil!
