So I drove by again at lunch at the dollar a gallon jump appeared to have been incorrect.Driving by the gas station this morning, maybe I was not seeing something correctly, but it looked like the price of gas jumped a whole dollar a gallon from the day before. Can that be right? Anyone?
Any big news event I missed?
In case you want to do more math, the price here is $3.55.I paid $2.83 today.
If you look at the first post in this thread by @kms over 20 years ago she paid $1.63. So if you do the math that's about a 74% increase in 20 years. Of course there have been times it's been much, much higher than today. I have no real point to make here, I just felt like doing some math!
How much tax does your county have? I think its under $3 out here and a bit cheaper in Wisconsin.I have a Costco down the street and easily accessible.
We pretty much just go there and I think the price was $3.29/gal this past weekend.
Though, generally, I don't really pay attention as gas is an effective necessity for our current lifestyle and built environment.
It's Cook County...so alot? How much tax does your county have? I think its under $3 out here and a bit cheaper in Wisconsin.
That is a HUGE difference! What causes the spread. For 87, $4.459 at the gas station near my house--$2.979 at the gas station near my work. Guess where I go?
Monopolies are bad...except for mine.Fun fact in my region there is basically one fuel distributor for all the gas stations.
I live in Storey County, which has two gas stations, neither of which particularly convenient to me.That is a HUGE difference! What causes the spread.
Fun fact in my region there is basically one fuel distributor for all the gas stations and you can only get outside that system by going to Costco. Said distributor sued in Environmental Court to block Costco from opening their pumps (well, at first sued over wetland protection /concerns/ that seemed suspicious and later shifted to "traffic") thus depriving us of any competition until years after the pumps were completed. Article's from 2016 but I think it's only been in the past two years the pumps have been allowed to be open at all business hours (earlier they were shut off during peak traffic).

I believe Oregon finally adopted self-service fueling, leaving NJ as the sole holdout. My dad bragged about $1.79 gas in Denver....
In WA I'm paying $3.79 (OR is about the same) .... when I was in Seattle two weeks ago, I filled a rental car at $4.59....
County tax? This east coaster can hear Dillon's laugh echo through our Green Mountains...I live in Storey County, which has two gas stations, neither of which particularly convenient to me.
The gas station nearest my house is in Washoe County, which has a HUGE gas tax to fund road and transit.
I work in Lyon County, which has no additional gas tax, and a lower cost of living overall.
I try to fill up on Friday before the weekend, but if I ever do need gas on a weekend, I go to Safeway and use my grocery points to get gas down to about the $3.359 or so range.
There is a Costco in Reno, but because of my aforementioned anxiety disorder and the way the station is laid out, I can't go there for gas because I feel trapped. Plus, the wait is an hour long, and time has value.
Yep, self serve fuel now, although I have seen some gas stations with the full service option still.I believe Oregon finally adopted self-service fueling, leaving NJ as the sole holdout.
They finally figured out people don't blow themselves up pumping gas on a regular basis.
This aligns with my wife's thoughts. You need it so no worries about price. Well, I still like to pay the the lowest I can. We usually fill up at WalMart as we save 10 cents per gallon with their program and pay via QR code so no skimming risk. Used to buy Costco but reg. or prem. is only available. Our cars are supposed to use mid (that is a conversation for another thread) so we do even through I will fill with reg. if the price becomes too high for me.Though, generally, I don't really pay attention as gas is an effective necessity for our current lifestyle and built environment.
