Yippee - I need to call the local good beer store and have them reserved my 2 six-pack limit.

I understand what you're saying, but I still really enjoy the IPAs, but I'm getting over the "high octane" ABVs. They seem to be just too sweet.

Same here. My love of IPAs is not going away. But I don't like them for the ABV.

It went down to a one 6-pack limit, but I purchased my 2014 edition of Bells Hopslam last evening.

I was watching Chopped tonight. It was a beer oriented episode and now my new goal is finding a bourbon aged beer, it sounds incredible.

I busted out an old favorite from Texas this weekend, Shiner Blonde. Man is that is a good beer, especially for being a light beer! :)

There are several of those coming out now. Some of my favorites include Foothills Bourbon Barrel Porter & Anderson Valley's Bourbon Barrel (Wild Turkey bourbon barrels) Stout.
Higher ABV and a sweeter taste - just below a barleywine.
 
I read a short article this morning about how California brewers are concerned about the ongoing drought. They may be forced to draw water from other sources, such as wells. Groundwater has more minerals that can affect the flavor of the beer.

They should be able to adjust it will just be a pita. Any good brewer knows what his mineral content is and probably already does some adjustments.

In other news, had a San Tan IPA while in Phoenix. Amazingly delicious beer.
 
It's Lawnmower Season!

Global warming could significantly increase the price of a pint of beer and even change the taste, according to Australian scientists who are working to drought proof the drink.

University of Queensland researcher Peter Gous said that the incorporation of the so-called 'stay-green' traits in barley, a key ingredient in beer, could mean a more stable supply of carbohydrates for the brewing process.

The big local beer festival was this past weekend. Great weather, great selection of beers, great time was had by all.

I saw a couple new breweries out there. For example Crank Arm out of Raleigh had a great pale called 'Unicycle'

Sierra Nevada had a site plan on a big poster of their new facility in Asheville.

It a very good place to people watch too. Wide spectrum of individuals, hipsters & bikers, jocks & nerds all enjoying great beer and getting along.

The worst by far is Cave Creek Chili Beer - yes they put a chili pepper in some awful beer. Sadly made in Cave Creek, AZ.
I just saw what I'll call the second worst because I'm not trying it. Ghost Face Killa, yes they put a ghost pepper in beer.

I tried a chili beer once - only once & then no more. It was from Lex Ave Brew in Asheville called Buck Mild. Here you can read the write up yourself.

I found Cave Creek more unremarkable than "awful". If there were no pepper in the bottle, it would probably rank among your typical American light lagers.

I agree it sounds like Ghost Face Killa is making a direct appeal to the machismo market. Sounds like something one might drink on a dare or as a stunt, but nothing you'd ever find in anyone's regular beer rotation.

Having brewed chili beers on a couple occasions I can tell you it's very difficult to get the right balance. Just throwing in a pepper during bottling somehow doesn't seem to get it.
 
I'm sure they did some fine tuning with the brew process and then just threw in a pepper in the end for looks. The couple rounds of beer I brewed was just ale and changing little things like the timing of hopps or going from dry to liquid yeast made a world of difference.

Maybe my problem is my taste is just too narrow with beer. I'll drink just about anything, but I'm not a fan of extra hoppy like IPA and I rarely feel like having a stout beer - although they are tasty. I'm more of a pilsner/ale kind of person and I don't always want weird things running through my beer like pepper. Although a nice lambic can be a good thing.
 
We have an amazing craft and microbrew industry here in GR... but there seems to be the early stages of a hipster push away from beer into craft liquor's and micro-distillery. One local hipster commented that GR "Is stuck in the college town, drink beer mentality when we should be looking for a more grown up sophisticated form of alcohol." It was at that moment that I was happy I was not a hipster... I celebrated this by opening a Kentucky Breakfast Stout from Founders.



Do you think that the beer culture is moving to a hard liquor culture? I have nothing against hard drinks. I like Jameson on the rocks. But most of the time I rather drink a good beer.
 
A few months ago, when my wife came back from California, she brought with her two full growlers, an IPA from Stone Brewing (can't remember which one) and a Sculpin IPA from Ballast Point. I really liked the Sculpin but they don't sell it anywhere in Michigan.

Last week on her way back from Arizona, she brought a growler of Double Oatmeal IPA from Fate Brewing out of Scottsdale. It was delicious.

Yes, I realize that the beer was warmed, then had to be cooled again when she does this. But it still tasted awesome.

Craft distilleries are the new fangled thing. What once was illegal is not now. There's a new vodka place in these parts, but they have a lot more work to do (if you catch my drift). Craft beer was like that 15 / 20 years ago.

I asked about this warming/cooling issue to a brewmaster and he said that the slow temperature change of about 15-20 degrees will not hurt the beer at all. Its the fast changes or more extreme changes - like putting a cool growler in your car on a hot summer day and driving around for an hour or 3 will change the beer. Think of it as cooking, while the slow temp change allows everything inside the beer to remain stable.

Over on this side of the state, there are a few new small scale vodka distilleries that are doing really well. We also have a whiskey distillery set to open later this fall and one of our newer, and more successful, local craft beer breweries (with a rather nice brew pub) is expanding with a vodka distillery of their own. FWIW, I've tried a couple of the local vodkas and they are alright I guess, but one shot of anything is about all I can handle for a month. I just cannot drink liquor like I used to be able to.

Regarding KBS - I had heard the hype on it for years and a local store has it in stock on occasion. I tried it a couple years ago and it just wasn't for me. Too thick. Yet, every time I am in the store I pick up a bottle if they have it in stock hoping I will have developed a taste for it.

Porch Rocker from Sam Adams is horrible.

Agreed. One of the worst Sam Adams I've tried.

Next Wednesday at one of my favorite watering holes, They are holding a "Tap Takeover" night with 28 different Stone Ales on tap. Someone will be taking a cab home.

Being a bit too young to care about beer when Stroh's was still a household name in Detroit, I never grasped how big the company really was or how fast it collapsed.

Crazy story... I did not know they were responsible for the 30 pack craze.

I think it is interesting that micro-brews offer 4 packs, sometimes costing more than a 6 pack of other micro-brews.
 
Beers from Alaskan Brewing are now available in Michigan! So far, they are only at bars but next month they will also be available in stores. Great news for Michiganders.

Speaking of Anchor...

My best friend lives in DC and a bar by his office had Anchor take over all the taps yesterday. I was jealous.

The only stuff I can find consistently from them here in Detroit are the Steam and Liberty Ale and I love both. Anchor Steam is one of my usual staples in my fridge. I'd love to be able to try some of their other stuff. Looking at their site now though, it looks like their are a few places near me where I should be able to get the California Lager and a "craft originals" (whatever that is). I may need to make a pit stop on the way home this afternoon.
 
Dark Horse Nation premiers tonight at 10 on the History channel. It's a reality based show about a small micro-brewery in Michigan, one I happen to frequent quite often! I like their beer and it's close. Great group of guys, so I hope they portray them and the business well.
 
Maryland brewery Flying Dog has put out a new brew with Old Bay seasoning. Tried some last night and it wasn't bad, very light and crisp (but needed to be colder). You could taste the hint of Old Bay, but I'd sure I would have liked it better if I had a platter of crab in front of me.

Picked up the Sam Adams Harvest Collection last night. It had a pumpkin beer, a Harvest Saison Belgian beer, their Oktoberfest, and Boston Lager in it. The pumpkin was decent and the Belgian was unusual but good. The Oktoberfest was good as always and Boston Lager is a regular in my house.

We're fast approaching pumpkin ale season. Any recommendations? A good consistent pumpkin ale is a rare and special thing IMHO.

I saw that at the store the other day and thought about picking it up. I'm generally not a fan of most of the Sam Adams stuff, but I do love their Oktoberfest. Once it's released, it usually becomes a regular in my house for a couple of months as well.

Some years ago, Sam Adams had a limited release "Fat Jack" that was extremely good. *(LINK) But their pumpkin ale is not quite as good.

As long as it doesn't have any "Porch Rocker" in it, I may just do that next time I am in the store. The last sampler I bought from them had that in it and it was easily one of the worst beers I have ever tasted. (Their "White Christmas" seasonal was another absolutely awful one)

I used Porch Rockers for target practice at my buddy's range. I don't feel guilty about making those bottles explode for some reason.
 
Purchased a growler of "Asheville Alliance Tater Ridge" Its a scotch ale collaboration with Sierra Nevada, Wicked Weed & Green Man brewing. They say its made with sweet potatoes but there's no hint of such. The results are a very nice tasty scotch ale with a good malt background.

If any of you NC Cyburbians find it, have a pint and enjoy.



This is pretty cool because some Asheville people were not happy when Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and Oskar Blues all came into town saying they they would destroy the local craft beer culture. Truth is they have actually embraced the craft beer pubs/breweries and have told them they do not want to compete with their niche. This will go a long way in proving that & as a result we might get even more collaborations.

I like the Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale, but it's a little sweeter - maybe to attract the female buyer? Works for me!

St. Arnold's Oktoberfest is better than the Shiner Oktoberfest, but not by much. Haven't tried Sam Adam's version, so that goes on the list.

Anyone else tried the Cinnamon Horchata Ale from Blue Moon? Yum!!
