NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Beer Thread

I sampled some Dale's Pale Ale by Oskar Blues Brewery in Lyons, Co (i belive this was discuss upthread some time ago) this weekend at a local feastivle. I enjoyed it. It had a hoppy start and a smooth finish. Its the first time i saw it in a keg around here. maybe i'll be able to find in in the easy to carry 12oz cans soon. I was browsing thier website, i am intrigued by "Old Chub" has anyone tried it?

I've had a few cans of Old Chub recently, and it's tasty stuff. Has a good roasted malt, sweet, slightly chocolately flavor. It has some body to it, but it isn't too "thick" or syrupy for my tastes. Definitely the best Scottish ale I've poured from a can. :)

Looking forward to backpacking this summer with couple cans of Oskar Blues goodness...

Cinco de Mayo

It's time to weigh in, Dinguses!!!

Well, what is some of your favorite Mexican beers. (And God help you if you say Corona...!:-@ ) [shakes fist]

With my tastes tending towards darker beers, Negra Modelo seems to fit the bill.
I do like a lighter Carta Blanca, at which some turn their noses up, but as a good drinking buddy in college had said, "ZMan likes to kick it Juarez style..."

What do you all think. Any dark horses out there for the majority to try?

And I had a good drinking buddy in college who referred to Carta Blanca as "the Mexican Budweiser"...

I drank a lot of El Presidente the last time I was in Miami, but I think that's actually a Dominican brew. The Zuma Brewery in Atlanta makes a pretty good Mexican style lager called Cancun (http://www.cancunbrewery.com/our_brews.htm), but it can be difficult to find even in the ATL.

Unfortunately, the Casta Brewery is now shut down. They were available in the larger Mexican cities, SoCal and Phoenix area. Good stuff.

I usually stick with Negro Modelo too. If I can find Dos XX Amber on tap, that's not bad either. When I'm in Mexico though, I'll drink just about anything that is put in front of me. Corona works as a good substitute for milk over Corn Flakes!

I don't know what the touristy spots might have for beer selections if you're planning a honeymoon. My Mexico vacations have been much more primitive where I may not see another gringo for a couple of days at a time!

EDIT:

I think there is an American owned brewpub in Cabo if you're hitting the Baja.

All the beers I've ever had from Mexico have been pale pilsners....Corona...Tecate....Chihuahua...Dos Equis (okay they had a so-called dark, I think)

[ot]We're probably heading to Italy on a shoestring/fly by seat of pants sort of jaunt. Therefore a lot of Peroni and good Tuscan wine will be drank... of course, I think this is happening... I have since reliquished control of wedding-ish plans...:-c ;) [/ot]

My money is on negra modelo or pacifico.

I've never been a big fan of tecate or dos equis but I don't particularly dislike them either.

Zman and jordanb are right on for good taste in Mexican Beer......Negra Modello is the beer of choice, as long as its fresh and not skunky....which is getting much more difficult to find these days......gotta get it from Applejacks I guess.....;-) :p :b: :b:

These are my two votes. When Ms. P and I go to the local "real" Mexican restaurant, those are the two cervezas that show up on the table:b: :b: , unless Ms. P goes for the Margarita on Tuesdays (99 cent night).

We might just go to "The Hat" tonight...

Beer Makers Target More Affluent Drinkers

Headline and article from the AP Wire:
http://www.newsday.com/business/nat...0,312112.story?coll=sns-ap-business-headlines

Highlights:
With beer sales falling flat across the industry, brewers are diversifying their reach, especially those in the domestic premium market. Light beer now takes about 49 percent of the market and is considered the standard beer, according to the trade newsletter Beer Marketer's Insights.

Domestic premium sales have dropped 22 percent since 2000 and 7 percent from 2004 to last year, said Benj Steinman, publisher of Beer Marketer's Insights. Imports have a 12 percent share and craft beer is at 3.5 percent, so domestic premium is still larger than those. But it's been losing ground, he said.

So what are you doing to reverse this trend ?

I'm doing nothing to reverse the trend. I almost exclusively drink what is considered to be craft beer. If I have to have a mass produced domestic I will usually go for the light versions. But living in the Pac Northwest I rarely ever have to have a mass produced domestic :-D

I'm with you on the pacifico...discovered it in Mazatlan on my honeymoon...loved it ever since.

Why should anything be done to reverse the trend? Support your local brewery! Drink locally! I'm with imaplanner on this issue which is probably no surprise to anyone here.

I second the local brewer support. And that doesn't include Budweiser here...:-@
Talking to a Bud employee last Friday, I found out that they might be trying the "craft swill" business, much like Blue Moon from Coors. <sarcasm hat on> Can't wait to try that!...<sarcasm hat off>
(I think that the number of A-B employees I live near is driving me more into craft beers. Maybe even pushing me more than prana's direction....:-$

The other day, I almost got into the face of a young CSU student by saying this: You are leaving probably the BEST beer store in Northern Colorado and all you bought was a 2-4 of LOST LAKE?! But I figured, "What's the point?" :r:

Well, much to the surprise of most craft beer enthusiasts out there, some of the recent A-B test markets for their craft beers seem to be getting decent reviews. I know Boston and Columbus, Ohio are two areas that will start seeing some of these test brews. These guys have really good brewers at their disposal, it's just a matter of letting them brew.

Here are the three test beers currently being developed:
Stone Face Ale
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29/30065/?ba=bros
(New England-style Brown Ale. 6.7%)

Devil's Hop Yard IPA
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29/30064/?ba=bros
(American IPA. 6.4%)

Leaf Peeper Pils
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29/30063/?ba=bros
(Imperial Pils. 8.0%)

And technically, I guess they have one less really good brewer at their disposal as Stone Brewing out of San Diego has recently hired one of the A-B brewers who was pretty much at the forefront of their test beers. He should bring some great large scale experience to the new (and much larger) Stone facility. BeerAdvocate Article

Just stay away from that miserable excuse for a stout that they put out a couple of years ago and is starting to see wider distribution, Bare Knuckle Stout +o( . I believe it is served on a nitro tap which creates a nice creamy texture and helps hide some of its lack of body.

But if you are in Denver and want to see what some of the Coors guys can brew, definitely stop in to the SandLot Brewery at Coors Field. They are constant GABF award winners and rightfully so, but are not constrained by the overbearing Coors corporate hammer in Golden.
_____________________________________

On a different note, Flying Dog brewery out of Denver is expanding by buying Frederick Brewing out of Maryland. I believe they will continue to produce their own beers under the new name of Wild Goose Brewing plus take on some of the Flying Dog portfolio in order to get fresher Flying Dog to the east coast.
_____________________________________-

And don't forget that next week, May 15th through the 21st is American Craft Beer Week! (and my birthday, but I suppose that is just coincidence!) 1300 craft breweries and brewpubs across the country are celebrating with special promotions and one time beers. Avery in Boulder will have tasting room only beers that have been brewed on a small pilot system just for the week and probably never to be seen again. A great chance to support your local brewer!!

picking up a keg of Sierra Nevada today on my way home to stock the kegerator with. Usually we try to stock it with local pales or IPA's but decided to give the Sierra a try. I generally dont like it in bottles but the few times I have had it on tap I have been pleasantly surprised. Hopefully that pleastantry continues

Right after I seconded prana's call to support your local brewery, I :-$ picked up a 12 of Sierra Nevada Pale. :-$

It sure is tasty though, AND it was on sale!! :b:

Sierra Nevada Pale on tap is amazing. The keg cap (whatever that thing is called) says "Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Draught Style". Is the Sierra in kegs a slightly different beer than the ones in bottles? If so that would explain why I don't care for the bottles too much but like it alot on tap.

Planner turns to brewing!

My dh, who I met in planning school, has always prefered beer to most other things in life. :-D Sooo, he has finally succumbed and, with two partners, is starting a microbrewery. They should be in production within 6 months. If you are in the Hudson Valley, NY area, keep an eye out for Chatham Ale!

Someday, I will have to post his well-developed theory on pub-oriented design....

admission of a beer snob

I have become a beer snob and I just have to admit it. Many people just can't understand when I reject a bud light and my preference of craft beer. In many social situations I commonly hear, ohh, I hate foreign and dark beer, it tastes funny. That's the whole point, complex taste and the many styles out there.

When on the road with youth hockey teams, I'm the kook that finds a local brew in a funny bottle, and almost always uses a glass. The kids like it because they get some craft root beer or orange cream soda.

I dealt with reverse beer snobbery this past weekend.
Had the neighbors over for some driveway drinking on Saturday (a tradition on my block) and they turned down every offer for a beer from my selection. In fact they ended up bringing a cooler of Bud Lights :-x over for themselves.

Was I offended? Hell no.

I think that opens the door to my bringing a good selection of micros over to their driveway next time (and not feel guilty about it) Also, it left more 1554 Black Ale(pretty dark for a warm spring night) and Sierra Nevada Pale(just perfect!) for me! Even the fiance drank a beer (not usually a beer lover).

I have witnessed that sort of thing as well. Like when you go to a bar that is renowned for having dozens of good beers on tap and somebody orders a PBR. To each his own but I have a hard time understanding it.

Amen to that. Guys that walk into a brewpub and order a Miller Lite drive me up the wall. If you don't like the ales or the darker or more complex offerings from the brewpub, that's fine, but either order their lager or pils or go somewhere else. Seesh.

All Not Well in Sudsville....

Interesting piece on the woes of the big brewers from the financial aspect....

Sinking: Beer sales, beer stocks Warren Buffett and the brewers themselves are pouring money into small beer makers. But with drinkers favoring wine and spirits, investors may have to wait for a rebound.

I was surprised that Bud, Miller & others have declined as much as the article indicates. It's a reflection of what's read one these posts - I rarely see anyone proclaiming the virtues of Bud Light.....:b: :b: :b: :b: :b:

First post on the new server. :)

Anyhow, have a look at my fridge.

elmwoodsfridge2qz.jpg

No, not an alkie. I have a beer maybe once a day, or every other day. I am having some people over on Saturday, though, so much of this will be gone. afterwards.

Look's like you went on a B, double E, doulble R, U, N !!!

Must go to Dan's house...Must go to Dan's house...Must go to Dan's house...can't seem to shake that thought;)

Making me thirsty, Dan. Looks good.

My beer fridge is looking bare. I think I have a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, 2 1554 Black Ales, 1 Murphy's Stout, and a Molson.

Get paid tomorrow, time to head to Wilbur's and get a sampler such like yours, fill the fridge and maybe take a photo. :b:

Suds on!

Hey, any Colorado folks attending the Fort Collins Brew Fest. I have a buddy from Aspen coming out and we'll be staying close to Old Town. :b:

Nice fridge Dan! I'm glad that I'm not the only that has one that looks like that. I have a third shelf full of homebrews too. Freshly painted the whole thing red yesterday as a matter of fact. Need to apply some stickers now!

I wish we could get the Three Floyds stuff out here. And our local distributor dropped the Two Brothers stuff too. That Heavy Handed was a constant 6 pack in my fridge last summer. Nothing hugely great, but a good drinkin' IPA.

Depending on the year of the Old Gaurdian and if you have more of them, you should try to store that one at about 55 degrees in your basement for a year or two. It's great fresh, but a beautiful beer with a couple of years on it.

And yes- I'll be at the Fort Collins Brewfest. Probably Sunday because of work on Saturday. I'm sure the whole liquor store crew and friends will make our presence known.

I bow in the general direction of your fridge, Dan - too bad most of that isn't readily available in Georgia.

What? No Natty Light? :p

Went to a small (11 person) cookout Sunday - BYOB - the beer selection by the end of the day included some European lagers and pilsners (Veltins, Stella Artios, Staropramen, etc.), some American micros (Red Brick Blonde Ale, Sweetwater’s Sweet Georgia Brown, Red Hook* Sun Rye), Sam Adams Light...and Natty Light:r: (compliments of the host, who got slugged by his wife after a few too many beers and one too many references to "it's the beer with the taste for food!").

*not sure that Red Hook qualifies as a micro

I think I am going to stop by the local liquor store with the HUGE beer selection on my way home. I'm in the mood for a really really hoppy IPA and/or a delicious and somehwta interesting pale.

I have a few ideas but anyone have any suggestions that I can see if they have?

I gotta quit reading the reviews on BeerAdvocate. :b: :p Making me very thirsty, with about 1.5 hours to go... (why did I choose to be on call?).
I just got on for a quick peak at Rogue's Smoke Ale and found myself looking at reviews of my favorites and some that I wanted to try. Man, that site is informative.

I was going to write a review on one I had last Saturday, but I figured I wouldn't have anything constructive to say, so I didn't. :-|

Counting the seconds...

Imaplanner, I had (and have) the Stone IPA right now and it is good. Since you are in Jet City, grab a Red Hook IPA. I don't think that Sierra Nevada's IPA is being marketed this time of year.:p *Someone refute this PLEASE.

Nah, use it for yourself. I hardly ever read other people's reviews but I do use it to log some of the beers that I have had so I can go back and see how my reviews have improved or to see if a particular beer recipe has actually changed over the years. And I certianly don't review every new beer...plus I still have 2 full notebooks of reviews that I need to type in.

Had the new Left Hand Twin Sister's Double IPA last night! Wow....tasty stuff! and $11 for a corked 750 mL isn't horrible but I do wish it was a $5 bomber or $8 four pack.

When are we going to start the never ending martini thread? Wait. Maybe I just did! ;)

38 minutes till beer time. :b:

Maister, shouldn't we be seeing a tearful Native American with that post? ;)

I tried a Cru d'Or Organic Belgian (Ft. Bragg, CA) yesterday by accident. With the hot Northern Colorado afternoon barring down on me, I was hoping to grab a Sierra Nevada Summerfest with lunch, but much to my surprise, the Cru d'Or was poured.
Thick, syrupy and 8.0% abv, it wasn't the best for the atmosphere of the day, but I drank it still, not wanting to waste a beer.
