Yes we have to go out of town for our culture.
Icehouse: Excellent walleye on fridays second only to Spanky's; has good bands at 7:00 a.m. Saturday mornings; finally took the "No Colors Allowed" sign off the front door. It refered to the rival motorcycle gangs from the 70's not being allowed to wear their colors in the bar. It was supposed to be a nuetral place. Someone must have finally told them that could be taken a different way.
Gunner Bucs: peel and eat shrimp, half pound cheesburgers, steak k-bobs. More people get pulled over leaving GB's than any other place. Designated Drivers are your friends.

Next time your in town we can plan the Mattoon laefest;-) Should take about 15 minutes;-)

Notice the great void of breweries surrounding Mattoon.

Any of you New Englanders familiar with the Thomas Hooker ales and lagers from Troutbrook Brewing (out of Hartford, Conn., I think)? They're starting to show up in the Atlanta market now...just wandering if they are worth checking out...

Found the Fullers Vintage Ale but haven't tried it yet. The bottle comes in a special looking maroon box. It seems alittle over the top, but I thougth I'd give it a try over the weekend.

Has anyone been able to find Samuel Adams ale that has been aged - saw it in a commercial briefly (just happen to hear about it in the background) and don't know too many details. Prana, what say you?

Definitely worth checking out! Thomas Hooker beers

The Liberator Dopplebock and Old Marley barleywine are great. Their regular six pack beers are also very worthwhile!

You might have to give me some more to go on. With Sam Adams and their new marketing campaigns, who knows what they might be calling "aged." Let me think about that one for a minute. I know they are re-releasing their Double Bock and then a lot of people have seen the Utopia that was featured on the History channel. Both of those would probably be considered "aged."

You should like the Fullers. Nice mellow and malty English Ale. Well, ok, mellow may not come into everyone's mind on this one, but it's not a strong ale or a barleywine or anything.
 
What about the Sam Adams White Ale? I have never heard of White Ale, what can I expect?

I pikced a bottle of that up at Wilburs last night. Also a Sierra Nevada IPA.

I play in a band based out of Champaign so that's how I know Mattoon. No gigs scheduled for Bagel Town at this moment...

So much for staying incognito with Google. We have definitely been compared to Dr. Wu, and their trumpet player has sat in with us numerous times. ' 06 is booking up now and it doesn't look like we have any public gigs in your area yet.

Prana, did you try any of the ales brewed celebrating Ben Franklin's 300th birthday? Our local brewery joined the ranks and brewed Poor Richard's Ale. Quite good, in fact was able to bring home 2 growlers (the limit per visit).

Prana, Here's the information I got on the Sam Adams beers. There are three "extreme beers" they brew: Millenium, Triple Bock ande Utopia. It was the Utopia beer I was trying to think of the other day (with a 23.7% av.). I haven't seen it in NC yet, but alcohol levels were just raised last September. It looks like the closest place maybe Virginia.

ZMan; great choice on the beer. Did you notice they have 3 choices - a silver label, a red label and a gold label. My avatar was chosen for two reasons. One because that logo is from Ms.P's favorite beer (gold label).

Planit have you tried the place on Park Rd (i believe)in charlotte, i can't think of the name but i read about them on BeerAdvocate the other night. I understand if you can't get it there then you can't get it in North Carolina. I read about utopia, isn't it a limited edition with something like 6,000 units produced.

The alcohol cap being removed was a good thing. I have been trying various imperial stouts.:p

Have you tried the Rogue Imperial Stout or Barleywine? Picked them up at GG&H last time I was there. Pretty good stuff! Something else you may want to try is Dogfish Ales Indian Brown (or was it Pale) Ale. I went looking for the 90 minute Pale, but they were out, so I settled for this. The six didn't last long at the house - vry good.

Wow- a lot to respond to here! I love this! These are just my opinions:
Sam Adams Triple Bock- if you can cellar it for a few years, it's ok but not a favorite, especially with all of the other high alcohol beers out there. Triple Bock
Sam Adams Millenium- I never had this one and don't know if it's still out there anywhere. Millenium
Sam Adams Utopias- The best way to try this one is to get to a Boulder's Strong Ale Fest or Boston's Extreme Beerfest. It's simply not worth the $120-$150 per BOTTLE!! I wouldn't expect to see it just sitting in the cooler of your local liquor store. It's obviously strong, but again, there are much better strong beers out there. Utopias

Now on to the Rogues! Awesome!! Enough said. Worth every penny of the $12+/- that they will charge you for the ceramic bottles. I wish they were still bottled in regular bottles, but whatever! All three, the I2PA, Old Crusty, Impy Stout, are really hoppy and like silk on the tongue. Really nice beers but not for the faint of heart.

And the Poor Richard's Ale mostly escaped me. I had a taster at Left Hand but that was about it. I might cruise over to Coopersmith's and see if they still have some on tap today at lunch. Great concept and I'm glad to see so many brewers coming together for a pretty special project. It shows something special about this tiny little segment of people.

A couple buddies are heading to the north country from Denver and want to make the rounds.

First: a stop for samples at New Belgium. prana, are they still serving La Folie? BTW I saw one of your old coworkers there last time, I didn't say hi, as she was a consultant on a project I was doing at the time.

Second: ODell's Brewing. Prehaps to sample and fill a growler with some 5 Barrell Pale Ale :p

Third: Not sure about this one, but they may want to hit the Fort Collins Brewery. Not one of my favorites, but I'm not one to turn down beer samples, and some of their beers have a smoky hint to them, which I have been known to like!

Final Destination: Coopersmith's for beers and Lunch. Going to try something new there, and maybe outta the cask! (Like Miles Ignatius and prana were learning me about when we were there some time ago)

Will I be seeing you around, prana?

I once made a rauchbier (smoke beer) using Colgin's (or was it Wright's?) liquid smoke.....and it was way too assertive. I like a nice smoky flavor, especially served with barbequed foods, but I find it quite difficult to get the right balance in beer (maybe if I were to actually smoke the grains instead of using liquid smoke.....).

Anyone have recommendations for their favorite commercially available rauchbier?

Yep- New Belgium still has La Folie on tap for tasters. They also have 2 test beers on now. The first is JR's test beer, also known as Single Speed. It's a pretty hoppy chomomile ale. Not too bad. It grows on you. Second, is a definite winner called Eric's Test beer. It's a peach lambic made with the 3 year old La Folie base beer and blended with a fresh peach ale made with Pac. Northwest peaches. Very subtle peach flavor and that same La Folie sourness but a hint sweeter. Very nice!!

Doubtful if I'll be around any of the breweries tomorrow. Have fun though.

I think they had JR's and Eric's the last time as well, which I believe was New Year's Eve. I will be trying some La Folie again though.

Liquid smoke sucks. I have yet to have a good beer made with liquid smoke. Use a smoked peat malt or Weyermann peat for the same flavor. It will come if you let it secondary long enough.

Commercially available Rauch beers? Aecht Schlenkera fromBrauerei Heller-Trum are probably the best out there. Super smoky and I need to be in the mood for these otherwise it almost turns my stomach. Ft. Collins brewery actually makes a pretty good one that is available at the brewery or at Wilbur's. And Baron's Brewing out of Seattle does a really, really good one- Rauchbier. The brewer and owner is a friend of a friend and he always brings some of this down when he comes this direction.

Other than those, I think you are stuck searching the local brewpubs for their interpretation of the style. Some will be good while others may leave something to be desired! It's not an easy style to brew, that's for sure!

I enjoyed the Rouge Imperial Stout. I want to try Duckrabbit's Imperial Stout. Duckrabbit is the brewery near Greenville, NC. All they do is dark beer... i like there milk stout.

Yep! :) :-D I talked to a HopHead here and he knew exactly where I was talking about. Brawley's is in a former gas station, so its no big but they have double the selection of GG&H in beer, but half the wine selection (and much less decor). On Park Road, just south of Woodlawn (if you want directions let me know). In fact we went there during lunch (he needed beer for the weekend too). I bought some for me and some for Ms. P.

Nice selection! Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is a favorite. Really hoppy American barleywine. ("Expedition" isn't part of it's name though. Expedition is a stout by Bell's in Kalamazoo. Equally as tasty though.) prAna's review of Bigfoot and Bell's Expedition
Haven't had the Burton Baton. Bastard! Those are hard to find!
La Chouffe is a nice lightly spiced golden. I turned my mom and aunt onto this one a few years ago at Christmas. prAna's review
And the La Binchoise Blonde is solid. If they still have any of their Noel around, it's definitely worth picking up too. prAna's review

I sampled Millenium at the 1999 GABF. One of my friends described it this way: "If God was in the form of a liquid, this is what He'd taste like." I agreed with him completely.

$100 a bottle. I think I drank about forty bucks worth.

Kind of depends on which style of porter. I tend to think of them in three catagories: English, Baltic and American. All are different and mostly in the hops that are used. But even in the malts, the English tend to be a little more subdued, the Baltics have a little more bite and the Americans tend to have more body and chocolate in them. Of course these are very general qualities.

The Beer Gods Hath Bestowed Mercy on Me Finally!

Oh the Beer Gods have bestowed mercy on me finally.....living in Greenville, SC is about as far away as coming of age in Portland, OR in terms of beer. A new store has opened called Total Wine & More, the more being beer and cigars....and the beer being great beer that I haven't seen or drank in ages. I was like a kid in a candy store, they even sell single bottle of most kinds of beer they carry. Still can't buy beer over 5% alcohol but this is a step in the right direction! It's going to be a very merry weekend indeed :D

This newfound store will serve me decently enough until I return to civilization when I go off to grad school in August. I have been accepted at Ball State & Rutgers so far.

I can get several different varities of Schlenkerla Smokebeer at my local beer store, I've got a bottle of their smoked wheat and Marzen in the fridge. The Urbock is excellent. They run about $3.50 for a 500ml bottle.

According to their Web site, there's not too many places in Michigan where you can buy it.

Baltika 6 from Russia is a very good porter, IMHO. Around here, it's sold in single 500ml bottles for about $1.50. (I live in a neighborhood with a good-sized Russian immigrant community, and Russian beers are easy to find around here. Russian beers are flavorful, good examples of the style, a great value, and their alcohol content is impressive. :-b )
 
Prana, the Dogfish Head Burton Baton was outstanding! Mellow and smooth. A very slight sweet taste (being 10%). Great color. I can easily say, it's is one of the best ales that I have ever had. Find it - Buy it.

I started out with it at the Super Bowl party and then switched to Harpoon's IPA. I used to really like that IPA, but after the Burton Baton, suddenly it wasn't all that great.:-D

I know where I'm going for lunch this week;)
 
So I bought some beer last night to take to a buddies, $24 for a 12 pack (6 pack of steam whistle and 6 pack of heineken). At that price it is actually cheaper for me to drink outside the house (pint is $5-9 and I'll only drink 3-4 pints)

Think I'll be switching to red cap (buck a stubby) or maybe laker ($24 for 24). Even my beloved 50 is close to $20 a 12.

New beers yesterday during the Super Bowl:
after starting with an Old Jubilation and a Never Summer (local winter favorites), I jumped head first into the fray with Avery's new Mephistopheles' Stout which clocks in at an impressive 15%. Pretty insane but better than expected since I wasn't too impressed with their other two in that series, The Beast or Samael.
Next, we kept the high alcohol train rolling with a 750 mL Dogfish Head Fort, which is a 18% raspberry bomb. Very tasty stuff!
Switched gears to a Stone IPA
Finished off my growler of New Belgium Peach Lambic
and then finished the night with Liefmans Goudeband. Wow! One of the top Belgians that I have had in a long time!

Right now, they are stored in milk crates in my storage shed. A few favorites hang out above the beer fridge in the garage but even most of my posters, coasters and other miscellaneous stuff are in boxes. Just waiting for the Lotto or an investor for a pub!

Business plan is written if anyone wants to invest about $10k. I'm even looking into a "co-op" style ownership, where we can utilize 20-100 people's smaller initial investments and pay yearly dividends. Technically, I know I'm combining two different systems of investment, but I'm trying to keep it simple for this forum.

What the hell is your wife/girlfriend (can't remember, sorry) say when you come home with 1900 EMPTY beer bottles!! Probably the same that mine does. "What the hell are you doing with all of those empty bottles?" :-|

Yep- the full ones that I am hanging on to are in the cellar and there will be 200+ pounds of dogs more than a little upset if you come crawling through their dog door!

How much beer can you buy in your locale? In Florida I have yet to come across a 30-pack which is the preferred quantity in the northeast. A full case (24) is rare and most places only sell the 18-pack.
 
You can get 30-packs in Colorado. In fact, that was all I lived on in college. :b:
The price came out to $14.83, at $5 a dude, you each got 10 beers -- good dose for pre-party/getting ready to go out drinking.
 
My favourite quantity to buy beer in is the 8 pack. A six is rarely enough, and a dozen is too much. Too bad I've only ever seen them in NB.

With a 24 of "good beer" approaching $50, most are sold as 6 packs here. 12 packs are also common.

Promotions bring out the 28 or 30 pack for the price of a 24.

Metro Atlanta is mostly 6- and 12-packs, plus cases (24) for the BudCoorsMiller bottom end products. A handful of microbews and imports come in 4-packs, and I see 18-packs of some macrobrews on rare occasions.
 
Living alone, and not inviting any friends to stay/party/whatever, a 6 pack is enough for a few days... :D But I haven't seen any bigger than that.... if you want more you need more 6 packs... :p


Although the thing that I hate is people that open the 6 packs to take out one or two, and thus finding a REAL 6 pack is a PITA. :-@ Individual beers are sold, just look next to the 6 pack, jerk!:-{
 
TP is not going to like this news, the "hipster ironic" beer of the moment is my favourite "regular" beer - Labatt 50. Saw that the trendy Drake Hotel has it on special now(3 bottels for $13.88) and the Gladstone has it on tap. Only problem, I feel pretentous ordering it, even though I've been drinking it for 15 years.
