Not that surprising, the entire tourism industry of creemore is based on the brewery, when you visit halifax you can take a tourism focussed tour of alexander keith's. Think of the spin off development from beer, farming, machinery, detox centres, AA........

BridgePort

Any of you Great Northwest folks familiar with BridgePort Brewery's line? An article in the local rag sheet this morning mentioned that three of their brews (IPA, ESB and Black Strap Stout) were now going to be available in the Atlanta area.

I think that currently beer is a very accepted and sometimes expected aspect of our society. When most people say that they are "going out" beer is typically involved. It does not matter if it is with the guys or girls, bowling, dancing, to see a band, for dinner, a pro sports game, or even on a date.

You can aslo Pod Cast a talk show about beer! Click here for info on the Beer Cast!

Good day of homebrewing yesterday!

Man, it's been a long time since I had most of a day brewing, but yesterday got me back on track.

Brewed an Imperial IPA in the morning. This is the 3rd or 4th time I've brewed this beer and it's the only homebrew I've done more than once! Love it.

Cleaned up and went to the movies to see Herbie as the last day of summer for my daughter. The movie was better than expected!

Got home and brewed an emergency Oktoberfest. Just an ale and as long as it's drinkable, I'm not that worried about true style.

Transferred an IPA that I brewed last weekend to the secondary. And finally, found a carboy of a spiced Holiday ale hidden in the cellar that I had totally forgotten about!!! I think I brewed it back in December and it's been in secondary since then. Smelled good, so I bottled it. We'll see what happens with that one.

:b:

Beer Tap Handles

Any of you beer guys collect Beer Tap Handles. I have about 14. They are mostly of the big guys. Have a Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob, Mich Light, Amber Rock, I think I have a Stella, Labatt Blue (Heavy and Light). My favorite is my Kokanee. I love that beer, but I haven't had any in years. I got them on ebay several years ago. They might end up back there but...I don't know. Anybody have any good ones?

I wouldn't claim to collect them, but I've got a handful. Two from Full Sail, one Pete's Wicked and two others that I can't remember. I bought them specifically for my homebrews once I convert the fridge and those handles in particular because I change or hide the original logo and replace it with my own.

Kegs an Endangered Species in Muncie, Ind.

Headline and Article from the AP Wire:
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationw...32995.story?coll=sns-ap-nationworld-headlines

For all Ball State Grads. :(

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Beer drinkers in this college town will have to settle for bottles or cans, as more than a dozen liquor stores have quit selling kegs.

The stores are hoping to ditch low profits from kegs, compared with beer sold by the case. Some say they also hope the move will help cut down on alcohol-related violence and accidents.

"The majority of students are very angry because they don't get why we're doing this," said Chris Johnson, manager of Muncie Liquor.

All six of the chain's stores have been no-keg zones since last weekend. At one store, a popular mural featuring a Ball State University Cardinal with a keg and the logo "Keg Headquarters" has been painted over.

Kegs are among the least profitable items a liquor store can sell, said Johnson, who estimated the gross profit on a $49.99 keg at $4.99. From that profit margin comes other costs, including refrigeration and damage caused by the cumbersome containers.

"A keg weighs 165 pounds. That's a lot of weight for my people to handle," said Johnson. "It's tough on our equipment, it's tearing up our coolers, and I no longer see the profitability of it."

But some beer drinkers -- particularly those of college age -- don't understand why the stores would quit selling a product that is sought-after, profitable or not.

"You tell kids at other schools that you go to Ball State, and now you're going to hear, 'You mean that school where you can't buy a keg?'" senior Aaron Shepard said.

Muncie Liquor isn't alone. Save-On Liquor has quit selling kegs at its six stores in Muncie, and Friendly Package also has joined in.

Kegs are still available, Friendly Package manager Mike Kilgore pointed out. But they may be difficult to find in Delaware County.

Last Saturday, Ball State senior Garen Garrison and his college buddies drove to Anderson to pick up a $76 keg.

The weather is turning a little cooler so I think there might be some homebrewin' going on in the next couple weekends. Going to brew a Scottish Ale (we call it Tilted Kilt) and the last batch didn't last too long. I'm getting thirsty just thinking about it.

Housewarming party this weekend. The first couple stores I found only had kegs of Bud and Coors. (I would settle for Coors if necessary), but I did find one store with a Moosehead Keg that was unclaimed, so that's what we'll be drinking!:-D ;-) :b:

I have had a few of their beers, the IPA being the only one you mention. Its pretty good - but its sort of mellow for an IPA (read not overly hoppy). Not one of my favorite Pac NW beers but a decentbeer nonetheless

I don’t think that people should put things into beer like that. I hate it when they stick an orange into my Oberon or cherries into my Cherry Wheat.

Brewing flavored beer is one thing, but adding stuff at the last moment is very wrong.

What about dropping a shot of Jim Beam into a tall glass of Miller High Life?

Prana may be proud for me standing defiantly in the face of Bud!

Can't wait to go to STL and order a Coors... or better yet a Miller!

I had a conversation with an AB neighbor about the competition with Miller. This came from when I asked if I would get booted out of his place if I showed up with Coors. He said he didn't care. Then he went into Bud being the ONLY AMERICAN OWNED brewery (on a macro scale). and Blah Blah Blah...

Personally I'll drink a regular Bud every now and then, but I just like being a jerk sometimes...:-|

I order Miller Lt ALL the time when out with them (not on purpose, I just completey forget...its not a great beer or anything, its just what I prefer when drinking a lite beer) I get "the look" and they change my order for me :-{ I have no "ties" to AB so I forget, and man do I hear about it!!!!

There is the story about the Bud guy that got fired up here for getting caught drinking a Coors at a restaurant. Golden is big Coors country though, although I did see a Bud neon sign in the window of a liquor store across the street.

As for your friends, Jax, if they are that insecure over the subpar swill they market then it may be time for news friends. If anyone changes a beer ordered among my group of friends... the gloves come off. :-@ :-@

Of course, that is just my opinion, I could be wrong...

They change my order EVERYTIME I "make the mistake"...I have learned to just order something else when I am out with them. They take it personally...the one that works for AB is actually my friends brother and it is "hush hush" that anyone would ever THINK to order something other than Bud....quite honestly between Miller Lt and Bud there is no difference so if it makes them happy....now if I order a Fat Tire or Guiness or something and they change it to Bud, the gloves would come off!!! ;) :-D

If I am in STL and hanging out with you, I want to go out with these friends. ;-)
For some reason I cannot get this subject outta my mind.

Is this sort of like driving a foreign car through Detroit?

BTW: A chick that drinks Guinness.. to quote Paris Hilton: "That's hot..."

Guiness is good...I remember going to a party with a Guiness keg...THAT was a fun party!!

Prana and Miles Ignatius talked me into it. I will be attending the Great American Beer Festival in Denver this Friday. (BTW, good to finally meet you Miles Iggy, and good to have another beer with you, Prana) It was good learning a couple things from the "Sages" of beer! :) (Oh and the Coopersmith Ocktoberfest Growler was great!)

Anyways, I wanted to post this as a "Call to Arms" of sorts to the Suds Heads of the Throbbing Brain... The GABF will feature around 1900 beers from all states of the USA and I know there are some out there who have favorites from their "Home Brewery"
I would like to focus on those beers that aren't available in Colorado, and try some that others on here like.

So if there is a brewery that will be there, and a beer to recommend from said brewery, please post it here and I will do my best to try them all.
The list is on this link:

Thank you much, Friends! Cheers :b::-D

Couple of pale ales from Georgia to check out - SweetWater's 420 Extra Pale Ale and Terrapin's Rye Pale Ale. I believe that both brews won medals at a previous GABF. SweetWater has five or six brews in their line-up (the Sweet Georgia Brown Ale is also pretty good), but the 420 is by far their best seller. Terrapin's only other beer is a Cream Ale.

Try a Smuttynose (Portsmouth, NH brewer). Shoals Pale Ale & Old Brown Dog are the most popular, but I'm partial to their Robust Porter, which was a gold medal winner at the 20th GABF.

Bravo!

Have a splendid time Z! I'm volunteering for the pour team(albeit with some modest consumption on my part) on Sat and looking forward to seeing Mr. & Mrs. Prana there.

Between all of us, I think Cyburbia will be well represented!:b: :b: :b: :b: :b:

Yeah- it was good to see both of you at Coopersmith's!! The beers were good and the conversation was better! I was supposed to email you something Tom, but damn if I can remember. Maybe the cask was better than just "good".

Afterwards, we headed over to Stonehouse Grill for some dinner and a few Belhaven Wee Heavy. Finished the night by walking around Old Town with a triple shot latte before the drive home!

My best advice for any GABF attendee is to print out that map and mark the places that you want to hit. Bring the map with you with the Top 10 numbered knowing that after that, it will turn into a free-for-all. Inevitably, you just end up wandering the aisles until something catches your eye.

Eat something during the festival and drink lots of water!

You know where to find me for specific beers, but so far the Smuttynose and 420 are both really good suggestions.

Without looking at the list yet, look for AleSmith, Fish, Pizza Port, Brooklyn, Redstone Meadery, Mountain Sun, Alaska Brewing, Bells/Kalamazoo, Three Floyds, Town Hall and if Abita can make it, I'm sure there will be tons of love for those guys and any other bayou brewers!

Anyone have any good bar recommendations in Traverse City Michigan? I am going to be there for a long weekend in mid October. Let’s just say that because of members of the bride’s family, (HER MOM) I am going to need a good bar.

prana, great night down in Denver on Friday. It was PACKED in the Convention Center and I love the "celebrations" they do when someone drops their cup...:-D :-D ;-)

Friday is a drunk fest, as you told me, and I sampled a TON of good brews. Three words of the night... "Colorado Brewers Guild"! The special beers they whipped up for the fest were fantastic, and talking to the guys there, they do a lot of good work! I tried the Finnish Shanti? (Sp?) and they also had an ale brewed with Simcoe Hops that had a small hint of pine in it. Just great. Prana, or Miles if you know anymore about these brews or this organization, let me know!

I also tried some of the recommendations you all gave out here in the beer thread. NHP, I really liked Smuttynose.

It was fun. I also got to run into some fellas I have not seen in a while.

Here's to more beer!
