As I walk through this world
Nothing can stop the Duke of Earl
And you, you are my girl
And no one can hurt you, oh, no

Yes, I, oh, I'm gonna love you, oh, oh
Come on, let me hold you, darlin'
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

And when I hold you
You'll be my Duchess, Duchess of Earl
We'll walk through my Dukedom
And a paradise we will share

The New Years Eve Eve gathering is tonight. Some call it a warm up. Some call it pre-game. I call it Monday.

Even someone like Dandy will appreciate this song. I wonder if one should read very much into the phrase "someone like Dandy"?

Most people that I know that use personal trainers don't see them 5 times a week. Usually it's 2-3 with some direction provided for what you should be doing the other days. Did he actually suggest 5 times per week? That's definitely excessive.

He did.

However, the gym has several fitness plans with workout routines, meal plans, and such to help meet goals. So I just downloaded one of those instead. I am starting with with a six-week, five-day split that fits what I want to accomplish.

I call it my birthday. We are going out as a family for dinner... nothing special. Wife and I will go out someplace nice in a couple of weeks to celebrate. It is just too crazy around the holidays.

I recently joined a new gym and with it you get a free session with a trainer. So did that at lunch. It was a chest, shoulders, and arms workout with a lot of isolated movements. Afterwards he asked if working with a trainer on a regular basis is something that I could see my self doing. When I asked how much it is, he charges $130 an hour, which would translate to $2,600 a month. As much as I would like someone providing direction and feedback, I don't think I can convince myself on that kind of investment right now. Especially given how little we talked about what my goals, lifestyle, habits, and workout preferences are.

Our newest city gym is nicer than the private gym we had been going to . . . and it has THREE pools. Normally it's $60 a month but as a city employee, I get to go free and so does my wife. Score!!! (Opened August 2024--paint ain't even dry yet.)

Our community has one, but it is not free to staff, the equipment is old and very limited, and it has weird hours. The other part is that it feels empty. If I wanted to workout by myself, I would put a squat rack in my garage. They also don't have any pools, unless you count the time that someone hit a sprinkler head with a basketball and flooded the basketball court.

Moana was paid for by a private foundation, so it wasn't the city's $60 million that was spent. The employees are city workers paid by the city, but not a dime of taxpayer money went into the building. A local casino (Atlantis) donated a lot of its brand new and never used equipment for the gym.

The facility replaced an older building from the 50's that was destroyed in the 2008 earthquake. Sat empty for years, then demolished and rebuilt. The water is heated geothermally so the heating costs (99F, 85F, 70F) are minimal.

I personally prefer empty gyms, which is why I go there bright and early (or, this time of year, dark and early) so nobody else is there. Others are welcome, of course--I'm not that possessive--but I like to sing with the workout hits so I don't want to subject people to that. I sing silently in my head when others are there as a favor to them.

We also have a gym in the basement of City Hall, but the equipment there is used stuff from the fire department so it's showing its age.

The new house has some drainage issues. To make matters worse, they put the bottom of the fence right on the ground. I am debating if I want to just replace the entire fence or just the rotten boards. My guess is that it is between 1/3 to 1/2 of them.

Today I learned the Matt Foley motivational speaker character played by the late Chris Farley was created by Bob Odenkirk.

What will be the final number for 2024? We should break 7K easily.

Will we break 7k? I agree we likely will.

I remember the days in 2013 when we had like 50 people just posting all day and running up the numbers. I had very little children then, and I had a lot less on my plate.

Memory,
all alone in the moonlight
I can dream of the old days
Life was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Can someone please explain the humor here? There's a joke here, I know, and it centers on the idea of plaid, but what it is I can't rightly say. Best guess is plaid is evocative of the clothes worn by aerospace engineers during NASA's heyday, but that's just a guess.

Have you ever seen the Mel Brook's spoof movie Spaceballs ?

Which was it - flirting or just being a nice, generous guy -

For the past many years after Christmas I have given the women in my office a gift of
a Meyer Lemon picked off the tree in brother's backyard and
a Sugar Plum from the local orchard
