Daily things 5️⃣ Five Things Friday

1) For the past several years, I have used a Whoop Health and Fitness Tracker. For the most part I have really liked it. But over the past couple of months it has had connectivity issues becoming disconnected any time I get out of blue tooth range. I would need to re-start the app for it to reconnect to the app. Today it would not reconnect. I tried to re-pair it to my phone, and it won't do that either. I am not pleased with the whole situation. So now I am thinking about maybe going with Oura Ring instead.

2) Just got off the phone with a citizen who wanted us to provide recommendations to a small community about 25 miles down the road that does not have staff. I directed her to our land use plans to help answer the questions that she had and that if needed, have their mayor contact our mayor.

3) There is a restaurant that I want to check out in another part of our region. They are thinking about coming here, and everyone is raving about it. It does not look kid Friendly.

4) My oldest asked for a family photo. I sent him several and he said he wanted a different one because he is not smiling in any of those... I explained that he never smiles in family photos and that is all I got.

5) I went to a local restaurant for lunch because I was in the mood for a Ruben. But they were packed and it was going to be a wait. So I ended up going 3 doors down to a restaurant that is a little nicer. Food was great (catfish po-boy) but the place was almost empty. It was not much difference in price, which makes me wonder if it is perception or something.

Our ancient college bed frame finally gave out so need to buy new furniture this weekend (yay IKEA)

1) Met with the school regarding an incident with the middle son last Friday. It is really telling when the school is questioning the teachers description of what occurred. This is especially apparent when the other teachers also confirm that his response was so out of character from how he acts in their classes, the hall, or at lunch. Regardless, he has Saturday School tomorrow and I hope he learns that he can't let others bait him into doing something like this, even when it is a teacher.

2) I am not sure what it is that I have, but I have felt under the weather the last week or so. It is the type where I still show up to work and trudge though, but I am going to bed at 7:30 or 8:00 pm, sleeping in until 5:30, and not doing much outside of work and sleep.

3) I have the opportunity and funding to do a lot of traveling with this new job. Problem is I still have a wife and kids that would rather I not be out of Town. Having said that, I am going to be making several trips this year. It will still be less than what I could do.

4) I am thinking about getting a bee hive or the back yard.

5) My personal to-do list is full of books that I want to read, places I want to visit, and stuff that I want to build (Woodworking).

5) Need to do some closet purging/organizing.

4- Mrs. P's description of her new job is 'trying to fill a teacup with a firehose'

3) I have the opportunity and funding to do a lot of traveling with this new job. Problem is I still have a wife and kids that would rather I not be out of Town. Having said that, I am going to be making several trips this year. It will still be less than what I could do.
You should check out some of the trail and biking workshops in Northwest Arkansas. I've heard they're doing some interesting stuff and there appear to be a fair number of conferences and programing going on.

5. Don't know what's going on with Arby's.

1. I've had a cough since I had the flu 2 weeks ago. The doc said some of these coughs are lasting as long as 8 weeks!
2. My hometown has Arby's but even better there are Roy Rogers. The BEST fast food roast beef around.
3. raining. Mid 30s. Like a typical southern winter day. But it's supposed to snow later on
3. Not sure I understand this one. That's not a typical southern winter day. It's 79 and sunny right now.
4. I have vivid memories of the Potomac plane crash in '82 since we got all the DC stations. It was during the day and we saw people being rescued in real time. I remember a crushed car on the 14th Street Bridge with a bloody hand stick out of it.
5. Between holiday closings, going to the Orange Bowl, being sick and then our freak winter storm last week this is the first 5 day week I've put in since the week before Christmas. It's been a lot!

4) I consume a ton of carbonated water. I don't get the expensive stuff, but I will go through a Kroger 12 pack in a day or two.
5) Youngest wanted to go ice skating, but the only rink within an hour only has open skate for 45 minutes tomorrow. On the other hand, I did lean that they also have college hockey there next weekend...

1) I need to do a better job with time management. It seems that every week is busier than the last.
2) My gym has a hair salon in it. Sure, it appears to be more marketed towards women, but I have an appointment to get my hair cut tomorrow, right before my workout.
3) I realize that teenage apathy is not unusual, but my 10 grader is not doing great in algebra and has been pushing back on requests to spend more time studying. He said that he does not see how he will use it as a freelance artist. I asked him if he had ever met a freelance artist in person and that he really needs to figure out what kind of life style he wants, because the one that I knew from HS, ended up living alone in a crappy apartment in a bad section of a city because he didn't make any money. My son is talented, but all he wants to draw is anime.
4) Every year Michigan Tech in Houghton MI does a winter carnival with snow sculptures. If you ever have a chance to check it out, do so. https://www.uppermichiganssource.com/video/2025/02/06/tv6-morning-news-michigan-tech-winter-carnival-2025-4/ (TV6 Morning News - Michigan Tech Winter Carnival 2025)
5) I have a lap on my desk that has the lowest wattage LED light bulb that I can find, so I can just leave it on all the time. Sounds like someone in Admin is not thrilled that I do that, but they haven't asked me directly to turn it off at night. Until then, it stays on, and even after that, it might still stay on.

My spin on it is that even if you do not use algebra per se, learning algebra teaches logic and problem-solving skills. THAT is the real value.

As you know, there is a fair amount of math in planning, too, if he does want to follow you into that career (I can't imagine a freelance artist can do that full time).

Calculating building size allowed on a lot with existing buildings? Algebra.
Calculating density bonuses? Algebra.
Calcuating setbacks/building heights in a dual-zoned parcel? Algebra.
Calculating shadows from building heights? Alge - - - ok, that's trigonometry.

etc.

I think the issue is more with it being a fire hazard than the electicity usage. That was the case with us with our Christmas lights--they were worried about the heat, however small, being generated by the bulbs, if a piece of paper or something happened to fall on the lights at night. Or, it starts shorting and we aren't here to see it.

Jim

1- not looking forward to going to the grocery store tomorrow, but that's what I'm going to do

5- pizza for lunch & there will probably be pizza for dinner.

That is what I thought at first, only to discover several other lamps in public areas that remain on for security reasons.

My boss was in manufacturing prior to city administration. He admits that he is overly sensitive to all things process and efficiencies. There are times, I think he would break out a stop watch to do a time and motion study on a permit. One of his biggest pet peeves is interior lights on when no one is around and vehicles running when they are parked. Luckily he doesn't work in our building, but it's not unheard of for a department head getting asked why lights and lamps are left on over night/weekend.

1- speaking of healthcare changes, I haven't gotten a lollipop in a long time from the doctor after they gave me a shot - come to think of it, the doctor hasn't given me a shot in a long time because the nurse does it

2) I have had 1 beer in the past 45 days.
3) I am thinking about putting a presentation together for our State Chapter's spring retreat.
4) We have a good size back yard and I am in the process of laying some ideas out. Namely, I want to have the area between the pool and the house feel like a Savannah style courtyard garden.

  4. Time to make my cat more homemade chicken broth soon
  5. Anyone else's Fridays either insanely busy or insanely not busy with no in-between?

1. Glad Cyburbia is back up. I missed it

4. I also intend to do a little weeding.

1) I agree with Maister's #1. It is good to have Cyburbia back up and running.

2) Going to a Bluegrass festival tomorrow. Two of the three kids won't want to go, but I think my youngest will enjoy it.

3) Sounds like we will be taking on a division of another department in the future. That director will be pissed, but it does not belong there. It won't be for a year so maybe they will retire before that happens.

4) This morning was absolute struggle bus to get out of bed. But I did, got to the gym, finished my workout, and got to work early since my middle son decided that he wanted to walk to school this morning. However I am still freaking exhausted.

5) Our pool cleaning robot was not working. It came with the house and we thought ok, maybe we will just get a new one... until I saw that a like-for-like replacement was going to be around $1,000. The other night I pulled it apart, tested the different operations, and discovered that a gear had come loose. I repositioned it and tightened it up and now it works properly.

1) I have my first staff lead public engagement event for our comp plan tomorrow at the largest spring event that we have... and they are now calling for rain.

2) We are having some issues with our state DOT. We had concerns regarding one bridge that they want to keep open that had a really bad structural score. Two days later they sent a notice for us to close a different bridge that had a much better structural score. The only difference is we own the one to be closed and DOT owns the one they want to keep open...

3) Despite watching the movie Conclave, I would be really curious about the politics going on right now to select the next pope.

4) My oldest mowed the front lawn yesterday. I am pleased with the results, although I noticed the mower deck is too high. I don't want the grass too short, but it didn't cut everything.

5) My calendar is way too busy for a Friday afternoon...

1 - idiot councilman posted a really bad comment & now there's going to be a crowd at the next meeting

Not Me Angel GIF

4. My coworker is leaving and moving back to the US. I am bummed. I really like her and will miss her.
5. The hot weather zapped my sunflower seedlings. :'(

1) I did not wear a white dress shirt today. Instead it is a City logo polo shirt. The department admin specialist said that she was wondering if I owned anything other than white dress shirts.

2) I am dealing with a citizen who wants us to spend tax payer money to fix an issue on her land, that she created. They leveled their back yard and put in a wooden retaining wall at the property line, partly within a stormwater drainage easement, without permits, and encroached onto City property with support bracing. Well, now that it is failing, it is our fault.

3) I had a new windshield put in recently. A few days latter I had to drive into the City for a meeting. At some point a rock kicked up and I now have a chip in that new windshield. I am going to get it repaired before it cracks again.

4) Tonight I am going to assemble some chairs that I ordered for the back yard dinning set, and plan to drink my coffee out there tomorrow morning. Unless it is raining that is.

5) Pondering getting a couch for my office, or even moving my office. Three of the four people that report directly to me, each being the head of a division, have way better offices than I have. There is a fourth matching office that is a 'meeting room' but it is in the back corner. I have been informally told by someone in administration (not by boss) that it was indented to be the directors office, but the space that I am in now is centrally located. It is big enough to put a couch in, but isn't a corner, and only has one small window facing a parking lot. The other room has 5 windows, is a corner, and faces a large landscaped pond. It would also free up my office for someone who will become a division head when we spilt off their work into a separate division in a year or two.

I tend to wear my city polo shirts on Wednesday and Thursday, Mondays, I'm a bit snazzier since I am meeting with developers all day. Friday is jeans and T-shirt day.

The onramp we use is right next to a quarry, so we are frequent flyers at the windshield replacement place.

Our backyard still looks pretty much the same as it did when we moved in in 2013 (weed and rock filled lot). Other than removing a dead tree, we haven't done much, but are do have plans in the works to start this fall, so in spring it'll be ready to go. We wanted to finish the inside of the house first. The inside of the house is barely recognizable from how it looked in 2013: both bathrooms redone, all-new kitchen, new flooring everywhere except the office/craft room. All we've done outside the house is brand new siding.

We also got a new furnace a few months ago--that wasn't cheap, but the wife no longer complains about HVAC.

Jim

1 - I had a city manager who only wore white buttondowns to work. We kidded him about not having a hard time matching pants & a tie to it - his wife heard and bought him some 'planner blue' buttondowns shortly after that
2 - rain last night didn't hurt the construction zone area in downtown, it actually helped wash the streets we planned on using for the spring festival tomorrow
3 - The Girl is coming home for the weekend & bringing the boyfriend
4 - our code enforcement partnership with the regional council of govts is working out great
5 - one of our murals won the silver medal in region 3 of the 2025 national mural awards!

3. Swearing uncontrollably will likely accompany the install.
4. Weather, thankfully, will not make the shop an oven.
5. New headlights are sorely needed.

3. Probably some garden related tasks I should do this afternoon
4. Social media, on the balance, is a bad thing where society is concerned
5. Maybe I'll grill this weekend

1. I gave my car a deep cleaning last night. The unfortunate thing is that I park on the street, below overhead wires. I'll have to give it a touch up before I leave for a wedding this afternoon.

2. I love my neighbors, except that they let their dog pee in my grass along the street and it's starting to stink. I'm going to let them see me sprinkle something (flour) from a paper bag in that spot. No one wants their dog walking in pesticide.

3. I worked away at a construction site for a little over two months. I'm happy to be at home now.

4 I cancelled just about every local camping trip this summer. I want to hold on to those vacation days for other things.

5. Planit, your downtown contractor should use a street vacuum.

5. Planit, your downtown contractor should use a street vacuum.

Our street dept came out this morning & took care of everything.
We kicked the contractor out Wednesday to we could begin setting up. He'll be back on Monday.

1 - was going to go to the MiLB game last night, checked schedule for promos (it was Senior's Day) & found out it was an 11:00 am game
2 - grilled chicken for dinner instead
3 - open enrollment insurance meeting this morning & we're gonna see a 5% increase in rates
4 - city not selected from Brownfields funding (again)
5 - The Girl comes home tomorrow for the summer & begins her internship on Tuesday.

1. Pre-K graduation is today... kiddo is excited about it, and they have little legit caps & gowns
2. Mermaid Parade is tomorrow in town... Mermaids are kind of a city mascot based on environmentalism and an old theme park that had a mermaid show. My mom will be in the parade--she was one of the mermaids back in 1967
3. had a big project win this week for a downtown revitalization plan--largest jurisdiction downtown plan we've done in about a decade
4. a group of pedestrians was hit by a drunk driver in downtown this week late at night. It is one of two intersections in downtown that have a long record of severe/deadly pedestrian collisions, with the City and state DOT doing nothing to address design and lighting
5. My niece is getting married next weekend, and my daughter is the flower girl. I'm most excited that we rented a large AirBnB capable of hosting the entire family

^^See you there - Hubby and I are related (well, I'm related by marriage) to the nice young man your niece is marrying!

1) Did a large donation dropoff a couple of weeks ago. I want to do another one before we go on vacation in a couple of weeks.

2) Temps went from just fine to upper 90's in one day. Texas didn't get a pre-heat this year!

3) No big plans this weekend.

4) Saw The Accountant 2 this week. Better than expected.

5) Speaking of movies, got our tickets already for Mission Impossible next weekend.

1) I am guessing my wife didn't have a good day. She texted me to see if I needed anything from the liquor store.
2) My youngest finishes elementary school next week.
3) It has been hot enough this week that we will likely end up in the pool tomorrow. Unless we get the storms that are once again predicted.
4) My sleep has been off the past few nights. I have been eating right, not consuming alcohol, and doing all the 'right' things. I really hope I am not coming down with something.
5) I have zero idea on what I want to do for dinner tonight...

1. Lunch today is courtesy of a stack of free Jersey Mike's regular sub coupons.
2. Previous tenant was sent three envelopes of coupons.
