Daily things 5️⃣ Three Things Thursday

1. Taking a rest day from the gym today.
2. Need to return some stuff to Target and pick up a prescription at CVS.
3. Oil change in the morning at the dealer. Good timing because my Tire Pressure Monitor Service warning light came on yesterday. I assume it's just a sensor that needs to be replaced.

1. Freezing spell is over.
2. I live near the end of a one-way street. Some of us will drive the wrong way from time to time. It's an unspoken rule. But let one stranger drive the wrong way, and we run to our porches to scold them.
3. I planned a weekend road trip at the end of April. No sense going South right now. The weather is more of the same.

1. Getting screened for glaucoma this afternoon. Given my eye pressures the last few times, I'm a little worried to be honest
2. I am so freakin' hungry
3. A pretzel with mustard would be okay right now.

Is the CVS within the Target? Our Targets around here have CVS's right inside.

No it's a stand alone CVS that we've been going to for years prior to when they took over the Target pharmacies. Ironically, right across the street from a Target that we frequent.

1) WFH today and I'm really cranking out the reports. Amazing what you can get done when no one's around to distract you.

2) I have to call CA on a report question. Really hope the wildfires get contained soon.

3) Dad wants to go on a trip that would eat into my PTO. Need to discuss with family.

1. Need to leave work early to go to a nearby city and high school to pick a Chromebook for a son's online class.
2. Headed south this weekend to chase geese and break in the new Browning Silver.
3. Son who was let go as an electrician apprentice due to lack of contracts just was offered a job with an electrical wholesale supplier.

Yes, the tame ones at business parks are too easy. Don't have to sit and freeze your backside off for those ones.
The geese in the business park where I used to work were quite aggressive.

Nowadays, being downtown, I see more pigeons than geese, and pigeons could care less about people.

1) I am having the hardest time getting back into the swing of things. I think there is a host of factors, namely because I have not been feeling or sleeping well.

2) We cut back on screen time for the kids and they are not taking it well. My youngest has been especially difficult to deal with. Screen addiction is 100% a real thing.

3) I need to get a couple of new ties.

3. Oil change in the morning at the dealer. Good timing because my Tire Pressure Monitor Service warning light came on yesterday. I assume it's just a sensor that needs to be replaced.
Apparently the extreme cold just threw off the sensor and the monitoring system just needed to be reset. Works for me.

My son had to buy another truck after a driver pulled out in front of him and totaled his and her car. An F-150 t-boning an Altima will do that. Neither were hurt, thankfully. Needed new tires on the new truck and the guys at Discount Tire threw in all new TPMS sensors for him. They do need to be replaced periodically.

Maybe you can compromise and say the kids can read all the books they want . . . No screens on them but they still get to read.

That was the one thing my parents never took away from me as punishment: reading. That was (and is) my favorite way of passing spare time. They would take away stuff I only marginally enjoyed, like TV watching or computer games. But, they never took my books away. THAT would have stung.

Also, even when I was grounded for some reason, I was still allowed to go the library, bookstore, school, and park as much as I wanted. Again, places I went all the time anyway. Should have taken all four of those away.

If you live at the end of a one-way street, how do you get out? Once you are there, you'll be stuck there forever . . . Trying to picture this in my head.

Or is it a one-way segment of a longer street, in which you can drive a short distance and be going the "right" way again?

Jim

The street isn't a dead end street - is that what you were thinking?

1. Sounds like the horrible accident at DCA was just that--an accident. My guess is that the helicopter somehow got into the flight path thinking the way was clear.

2. APA Chapter mixer at a local bar after work. I really should go, but I just can't work up the energy.

3. Going to see Terry Fator this weekend at a local venue. He is a ventriloquist my wife likes--I guess if she likes him, that's reason enough for me to go see an act I've never heard of. (Wouldn't be the first time.)

Jim

1) WFH today, but I think yesterday would have been the better day (weather-wise).

2) I have a headache.

3) I wish it was Friday.

1. 54 degrees predicted for Monday - best to get my lawnmower winterized...a little late, I know.
2. My SSA benefit at 67 is projected to be $948/month and should change (hopefully in the positive direction) in the next 13 years.
3. Salted peanuts in the shell are not salted like I remember as a kid.

1. Salted in shell peanuts I understand are soaked in salt water for a period of time and allowed to dry afterwards
2. I just got 1st place in my Conflict of Nations WW3 game. Yay
3. Currently reading a book titled Mayflower. You'll never guess what it's about.

1. I was so cold last week that I ordered not one, but two, Irish sweaters.
2. I always complete the survey after training.
3. For a mere $35 shipping fee, one sweater bounced back and forth between two Irish cities before moving on to UK and USA. I guess that's a bargain.

1. There is no law against mailing someone a picture of one's own house . . . so there is nothing anyone can do. I really think it was a misguided "want to buy your house" letter but with no actual letter. Why it came to my work and not the house in question? Well, I've no idea.

2. Our tree is getting trimmed next week, weather allowing.

3. Heavy Planning Commission meeting agenda tonight up the hill in Virginia City. Snowstorm moving in, so I am packing an overnight bag just in case I can't make it back home afterward. This is my SOP anyway, but this time it's especially so.

Jim

1) Woke up with a headache but I can at least function.

2) Chicken in the crockpot for dinner. I'm going to shred it and have lots of leftovers.

3) Nice and sunny outside; too bad I'm stuck inside working.

1) Getting quotes for a new fence for the back yard... I am a little surprised at the costs so far. First one came in at $7,500.
2) Had a real estate agent tell me that an intersection near an interchanged had to be a truck stop, that he has written several of the ordinances in the areas, that that mixed use does not work in the mid-south.
3) I had to take my suit coat off. I think the AC just kicked on, but it was too warm for a little while.

1. Got in the mail yesterday a "we want to buy your house" letter, along with that same Google Street View picture of my house and an apology that the letter itself was not included in their previous mailing. Apparently, it was an administrative mistake that caused a lot of consternation from folks.

Still an odd marketing tactic, and the answer is still no. Glad my hunch was correct. As to why it was addressed to me at work and not at home, I have no idea.

2. Got some snow overnight; planning on going in later this morning.

3. No big plans for the three-day weekend.

1. Ate too many chocolate covered rice cakes.
2. Trying to figure out how to become independently wealthy.
3. We are all fu@ked.

1) BigWigs in the office today. We got yummy BBQ for lunch, and there's a HH later.

2) Been really tired lately. Don't know if I'm not getting enough sleep, or if the sleep I'm getting isn't restful.

3) My sister's foster cat is now her cat. Foster Failure but that's OK. She's a sweet, older cat.

1. Son's fiance is at odds with her family - makes August wedding plans difficult.
2. Telling to go cheap and pocket what money you, and we, would be spending.
3. Son goes back to a job he was let go from, along with several others, after Christmas. Got on with another contractor but will only work two weeks for that firm. Awkward.

1. Power went out for seven hours last night due to fierce winds. Didn't sleep well without my CPAP. I really should look at a battery backup.

2. All our backup lights worked.

3. It's supposed to be 79 degrees on Tuesday. My rule is that I don't swap out snow tires for summer tires until the first confirmed 80 degree day, at which point I have 10 calendar days to do so.

JIm

1. Spring break. Woooooooo!
2. Missed you all, well, most of you.
3. I think we should all be forced to submit a post listing 5 things we accomplished during our hiatus.

1) Wife got called into work last night and didn't get home until this morning. She will be running on 3 hours of sleep today. I feel horrible for her because this hospital sucks and she isn't finding openings in the positions that she is looking for with the other hospitals.

2) Found out last week that the girl that my middle son has a crush on, also has a crush on him. We ran into her family at a local restaurant (her dad works with me, but in a different department.) It was adorable seeing how shy the two of them were when we were all talking.

3) One of the kids did something to our front door and now it won't unlock. It is one of these massive double door sets with the mechanics integrated into the door, so I called the company that installed them for the previous owners. They need to install a new lock assembly because of a broken spring. It is under warranty, however it will take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive. Which means we can't use our front door for up to a month. I am happy it is under warranty though. The assembly that is being replaced is $4K.

1. We had a power failure downtown due to weather, so the Planning Commission meeting was cancelled. SInce it wasn't continued date certain, I have to re-notice everything.

2. I may be resuming my "Standing On My Head" column soon after a two-year hiatus. Still working out the details--didn't know I had so many fans.

3. No plans for Easter as far as I know. Wifey will let me know otherwise.

Jim

1. Son dumped his Yamaha and tore his coracoacromial ligament in his shoulder.
2. Played his drums the next day.
3. Surgery is scheduled.

1) This has been a very good week and I have been able to accomplish quite a bit.

2) Had to have a difficult discussion regarding timelines this week with a multi-department review team. It went very well.

3) I should be getting a new windshield today, however the company has not called to confirm what time they will be coming out.

1. I've changed up my morning routine on Thursdays. Instead of staring at the Wall $treet Journal for half an hour, I go walk around the block a few times, then start getting ready for work. I'll catch up on the W$J later.

2. I have an appointment to swap out the snow tires for our summer tires on the car on Saturday. Forecast calls for a couple inches of snow Friday into Saturday--not enough to affect roads really. We've yet to have an 80-degree day, but it's late enough in the season now I can go ahead and do the swap.

3. Our local used bookstore is having its $5 bag sale this Sunday, like it does on the last Sunday of every month. As much as I don't need any more books, I can't say no to cheap books. And, if I find even one book that is even tangentially work related, the entire bag is considered a business expense! (My logic is that the work-related book is $5, and the other books have a marginal cost of $0 and therefore don't come out of my "me budget.")

3a. The wife and I each get an allotment that we can spend on whatever we want, without input/override from the other. Mine usually goes toward books, computer games, and Panda Express.

Does your current windshield have a crack problem? :)
No, but it drinks quite a bit, and I can't count the number of times I've sat down in the car and gotten a powerful weed scent.

1) Watching hockey playoff games during the day is nice!

2) Been eating a lot of chicken lately. I think it's been on sale the most often.

3) We need the rain, but I still want some sunshine.

1. Going to a wedding Sunday over the mountain in Sacramento. A Sunday is an odd day for a wedding, but whatever works for the couple.

2. Said wedding is actually going to be on a moving train on a spur/balloon line to a museum--the train will move around the loop during the 18-minute ceremony and end up right back where it started.

3. I suspect the groom's father being a former board member of said museum had something to do with the arrangements for #2. It'll be fun.

Jim

1. I'm eating lunch at a service plaza picnic table while a crew paves.
2. Popeyes mac and cheese is surprisingly good.
3. I'm amazed at the variety of people who pass through here.
