Be safe. This just in from our fire chief. Having a hard time wrapping my mind around 20-30". It's really coming down now. Flooding already started and we've got 2 days + left! View attachment 63026
65 is a nice summer morning temp.
Similar here59 on the way to work this morning and a projected high of 80. Man this is great late August weather.
This was pretty much our experience and we're east of you. It got super windy, then some rain and thunder and lighting. Some of our neighbors don't have power but we do. Ours flickered once but that was it. I'm sure the fact that the electrical grid was being taxed due to the heat didn't help.We got home from Toronto yesterday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. It was 98º on my thermometer when I pulled into our driveway.
About an 90 minutes later, the temp had dropped a little bit and it was starting to get a little dark but the sun was still shining. While I was taking dinner out of the oven I got a text from a buddy a couple miles NW of me complaining that "the storm" had knocked his power out. I was about to respond to him with something snarky like, "Blue skies and sunshine here! What are you talking about?" and in the <1 minute it took me to set down the food and walk across the kitchen to my phone the wind suddenly whipped up and the sky got black and our power started flickering. I could hear all the sirens from the golf courses by us and over the next 10 minutes, our power shut off (not just flickered, but shut off) a handful of times. It then came back on... for about 15 minutes. It's now been off completely since around 5:45 p.m. yesterday.
When I went to bed last night, the utility had an estimate for our power restoration by 7:00 p.m. today. When I checked it this morning it had been updated to by end of day Thursday (tomorrow).
It only rained for about 20 minutes and the wind died down pretty quick but the thunder and lighting lasted all night long. Looking at reports from the local electric company and our county emergency preparedness folks, the storm wasn't widespread but there were pockets around the metro area with some really severe winds. Around 5:00 a.m. I went to the gym to work out but also to get out of our sweltering house, to be able to take a shower with some lights, and to charge our phones while I was on the treadmill. Afterwards I drove to Starbucks to bring us home some food and beverages and all up and down the main road from downtown into our neighborhood there were a bunch of huge trees down.
It's about 80º and sunny and crisp. Gorgeous weather out right now. It's making it really hard to concentrate on actual work and being inside.
All y'all batten down the hatches and stay safe.We have a downtown festival on Saturday. Hope is speeds up and gets past us.
Expecting 40-50 mph winds & 4"-8" rain in our location on Thursday & Friday.
Local weather professor cited "orographic" factor of system piling into steep elevations of mountains. Latest calls for 8-12" just at height of county fair!Word of the day related to Helene - Fujiwhara effect

Why could Helene trigger massive rainfall inland? Blame the Fujiwhara effect
Forecasters say soon-to-be Hurricane Helene could undergo a Fujiwhara "interaction" with another storm over the south-central US.www.usatoday.com
And so will my brother and his family who live in AthensYay, we're going to get clobbered by a hurricane Friday.![]()
Has he checked in with you this morning? The path of the hurricane tracked east, so Athens got it worse than Atlanta. And so will my brother and his family who live in Athens![]()
Y'all come out ok? We just got a ton of rain and some minor flooding.Has he checked in with you this morning? The path of the hurricane tracked east, so Athens got it worse than Atlanta.
Lot of rain, bunch of debris down, no damage to house. No power since 9:30 this morning. I've heard a couple of trees go down, but they're not visible from my yard. The roads in my hood are all passable.Y'all come out ok? We just got a ton of rain and some minor flooding.
I haven't heard from him since last night, but he is actually in Atlanta right now. His wife told me a few hours ago that flooding in at least their part of Athens was minimal and no flooding for their house. I guess the eye of the Hurricane went right over Athens (where the winds are much calmer) so they didn't get the brunt of the impact.Has he checked in with you this morning? The path of the hurricane tracked east, so Athens got it worse than Atlanta.
Wow, hope people were able to evacuate.Western NC is in bad shape. Catastrophic things are happening. Part of I40 collapsed into a river and Lake Lure dam will most likely fail.
I try to hold out to Nov. 1, but I'll be working out of town a good bit for the next few months. I'll be keeping an empty house warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing.Still haven't turned the heat on in the house up here in Metro Detroit. It's been chilly in the house the last few days, but I've been running a space heater a little bit when I'm home to take the edge off. It helps that my house is brick.
With my wife overseas for work and the youngest off at college, it feels like such a waste to heat our 2-story colonial for just me and my oldest daughter, especially when neither of us are at the house very much other than at night.
At this point it's become a challenge to see how long I can go without turning the heat on. The temps for the next week look promising. I'm going to try my hardest to hold out until November 1, but my 21-year old daughter may murder me in my sleep if I get too crazy about this![]()
