The problem is that the stats don't really pinpoint gun use in the crimes. It just tells me the UM is a high rape school with more other violent crime than most schools. I would have thought bigger, urban schools would top the list like an NYC or my own ASU, but I guess not.

I don't know that it's going to be that interesting. The top NC Republican says that gun free zones don't work and more guns are the answer.

I thought it was interesting that a couple of days ago there was story on the most dangerous campuses. U of M was way higher than any other which looks like it has to be some sort of recording discrepancy or that place is the wild west.

We need to be able to see the exact geographies that they used in their analysis so that we can see what the population is in those areas (number of households and daytime pop would be helpful too).

That was my first question.

In regards to the original conversation, what I think is going to be interesting is there are a lot of people asking, ok, what should we do. And while a couple of people are saying do away with all guns, no one is giving a really good answer on how to address the situation, including the NC Speaker of the house.

Despite NYC being nearly 8M in population plus a good deal more that come and go each day, it’s a remarkably safe city. NY has pretty stringent gun controls which also plays a part. Violent person on person crime is often drug or gang related.

Closing arguments today in Texas' impeachment trial of AG Ken Paxton. Some of the eyewitnesses called to testify were absolutely outstanding and highly credible... former Texas Ranger hired by Paxton as an investigator (and a loyalist) determining bad stuff was happening and taking it to the FBI had to be the most damning.

Analyst on NPR... "it is hard to conclude Paxton is anything but screwed."

Well, we now have confirmation of party-over-propriety. He was acquitted, despite there being some very clear smoking guns. Every single Republican State Senator except for two should be eliminated.

I used to say I would at least read about every candidate before deciding, but that started fading post-2016. I'm now saying across the board that if there's a R after your name, I will presume loyalty to party over anything, and disqualify you from any consideration.

I think I'm done with this state and may start actively looking to leave. I got my hopes up on the overwhelming bipartisan vote to impeach in the Texas House.

Don't pick Ohio... we may be worse.

IL ended cash bail today and has an assault weapon ban and codified women's broad reproductive rights and has Great Lakes water source (in much of NE IL at least) and two major international airports and the freight rail hub for much of North America and Italian beef sandwiches and....Chicago.

:)

Don't pick Arizona, we've been trying to close the doors on new people since 1986. Also, we have the same crazy party loyalty. They're starting to lose the house and senate so they're trying to find ways to give more power to rural Arizona by doing things like taking away the citizens right to place things on the ballot.

The Dirty Jersey ain’t half bad either 🤌

For the first time, I responded to a Facebook post for a band looking for a trombone player but then I found out the guy was completely bonkers MAGA. Good to know.

Ohio is already under fire with political signs. We have abortion and recreational marijuana on the ballot. It should be an interesting silly season.

U.S. Sen. Menendez (D-NJ) and his wife were indicted on bribery and corruption charges this morning in NYC. I’m hoping that might be a wrap for him. His son was rumored to be his successor in the next election, but I don’t think that will happen now.

I had to go around the block on my afternoon walk to the coffee shop because my wife didn't believe me so I had to get photographic evidence. There was an old guy down the street from us who had a bunch of Trump 2024 signs up until they disappeared a few weeks ago (and Trump 2020 signs that he kept up for a couple years with black electrical tape over Pence's name). But nope, different house.

FWIW, when I was first approaching the sign on my run this morning I thought it was somebody running for the school board election as I've seen a few of those pop up this week, but nope.

I bet you've heard that recreational mary jane will result in an increased need for abortions

But...the US Justice Dept is biased...didn't you hear?

;)

Trump posted on his social media that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Milley would have suffered DEATH over his late (fully authorized) phone call to his Chinese counterpart assuring them that the US was not about to strike, no matter how deranged Trump might sound. Paul Gosar picked up on the Trump message and posted that Milley should be "hung" (an aside to the Representative from Arizona - pictures are hung, people are hanged). You may recall that DeSanity recently said that he'd be "slitting throats" of federal workers upon taking the Oath of Office.

What is up with these people and their violent rhetoric? I can only conclude that R's truly are hoping for political violence over the next year or so. It is crazy ...

Wonder why we can't get local, state, and federal employee's who are good?

This will just be spun on Fox as "See how corrupt Democrats are." They'll then say why are more of their own party calling for is removal and probably go out there and find the one person who thinks that maybe he shouldn't resign. It's insane and like there are two realities.

This gets worse...

Reports confirmed that they were one vote short of convicting him. When GOP Senators saw that the votes weren't there, they calculated political consequences and abandoned ship. Reports of some very colorful language being thrown around the room as others watched them remove their spines. The GOP has no moral or ethical compass.

Hard to believe that Target and other national retailers are leaving areas where prosecution of theft is non-existent. :r: Do what you want but then don't cry when your community is underserved unless you're willing to subsidize them staying.

And on another note, you also can't cry when one party refuses to condemn or convict one of their own and then your party turns around and does the exact same thing. It's maddening. Sometimes the right thing to do really is black and white.

The House Republican Impeachment Inquiry own witnesses say they don't have evidence, try to zoom in on something that didn't happen in 2018 when Joe wasn't a vice-president or presidential candidate or president - he was a private citizen. But nevermind any of that, they'll still look for something.

One representative stated rightly - this is about points. Trump was impeached multiple times and has been rightfully punished for his crimes. No other President in history is that corrupt. So the R's need to show that there is a D that is equal or worse than Trump. Fortunately I don't think we will likely see another President ever again as corrupt as Trump. He was corrupt before he was President, and then leveraged the Presidency to just do more of what he was doing before he was President. It seems unlikely we will have the confluence of corruption again... but who knows at this point.

Youngkin v. Newsome is my vote. I would love to see two adults in the room attack policy positions again.

Agreed...but I think 2028 is more likely, right now, to be Youngkin v. Whitmer

I don't think a CA Dem is a good choice for the Dem nom for a while.

Gaetz says he will seek to oust McCarthy as speaker this week. ‘Bring it on,’ McCarthy says

Here we go.

He has yet to suffer any punishment for his crimes. He likely will not be convicted in the cases. Because. Jury. Nullification.

McCarthy was in a no win situation. Capitulate to the crazies in his party and risk election prospects for the more moderate faction of the GOP (himself included) or make a deal with the Dems to get the 2/3 votes needed to avert a shut down. In the end only one Democrat voted against the continuing resolutions. There wasn't an overwhelming consensus on McCarthy as speaker from the get go so he may be a one and done.

Hopefully Congress can hammer out the rest during the next 45 days which is when the CR expires.

A coworker just came into my office to tell me that the Republicans ousted the speaker of the house. This whole political system is all messed up.

To be fair...that was said within an alternate timeline.

I didn't notice the post date that was before McCarthy was officially ousted. The fact he didn't want to make a deal with democrats sealed his fate - the extreme right had been waiting to toss him, so it was the only play to achieve some balance.

MTG's idea to again nominate Trump as speaker is still dumb.

There is so much BS political theatre in this entire thing.

Hey MTG (& others) - did you know there's a House Republican own rule that require a leader to step aside if indicted for a felony where 2+ years of imprisonment may be imposed??? Check out Rule 26 Temporary Step Aside of a Member of Leadership Who Is Indicted

That rule could be changed easily.

My previous post was before McCarthy was ousted. A few key things:

  • I would be shocked if a budget is passed by the House before the CR expires.
  • The Democrats led by Hakeem Jeffries elected to vote McCarthy out largely because he would not come out against his parties fringe lunatics and McCarthy has proved to be untrustworthy.
  • In order to get the votes for the speakership, McCarthy agreed to the rule that one person could bring the motion to vacate the speakership for a vote. He signed up for this deal thinking it wouldn’t happen. It took 15 rounds of voting for him to win.
  • No real substantive legislation has been passed under McCarthy’s speakership. House bills that have been passed are perfunctory or fluffy in nature. I’m no fan of Pelosi, but she got shit done.
  • McHenry is a placeholder for the purposes of running the vote to choose the next speaker.
  • Best quote I read today comes from Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND): “The next speaker better figure out how to negotiate with the exotics before you become speaker because you’re sure as hell gonna have to do it after you’re speaker.”
Hold on tight because it’s going to be a wild ride.

What are your thoughts on RFK Jr? He is talking of running as an independent which sparks my interest.

Personally, if it comes down to Trump V Biden again, I once again looking to 3rd party candidates. I will not vote for either of them, and never have.

RFK, Jr is a nut job anti-vaxxer. That apple fell far, far, far from the tree, sadly.
^^ THIS!!!

It is hard for me to express my feelings on the Holy Land crisis without being accused of certain things by bad faith actors. So I am letting the words of prominent anti-Zionist Jews speak for me.

Between the Israel fighting and the Texas Republican Party Nazigate, I'm just feeling discouraged lately. Like it's all spiraling down. Everything being ruined by a small handful of people.

Lets play a game of what if...

Several local economists, including one that has gotten it right almost every year for the past 15, predict that we will have a significant economic downturn the second half of 2024 and corporations will need to restructure and layoff staff due to costs. They cite everything from increase product and shipping costs, to health insurance costs, to the effects of inflation, to increased staffing costs.

IF this becomes reality, who do you think wins the election?

I firmly believed that if the Democrats nominate a more centrist (and younger) candidate in stead of sticking with Biden, they would blow everyone else out of the water, and that includes Trump...
