NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Political Discussion Thread

I'm just waiting for the torches and pitchforks. There're political enemies to be investigated!

The House GOP for the foreseeable future.

“In one day he ended every future opportunity that doesn’t include speaking engagements at the local proud boys chapter,” Hicks texted to Ivanka Trump’s chief of staff, Julie Radford.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That.

I would love to see a 40-50 year old President next. Someone who "gets" social media, but in a positive way, not a weird look at me Trump way.

I noted it before, but in thinking of the next two years, I do think Pete Aguilar could be a choice. His role in the Jan 6th committee, his current position in the House, and his nomination for Jeffries would put him in good spot for momentum. I agree that Biden, and perhaps any soon-to-be octogenarian, just is pushing the limits.

I saw an article on Politico or one of those that said Biden will ask Harris to resign, appoint a better candidate (the article suggested Gavin Newsom), then Biden himself would resign to allow the appointee to run as incumbent. At first I was :D but then I was :doubtful: because I just don't think such obvious maneuvering would work.

I think people would see through that pretty easily, and such a gamble would probably create more chaos.

The House GOP for the foreseeable future.

The current speakership fiasco is entertaining, yet also sad. The GOP leadership is dysfunctional if they are arguing that McCarthy isn't right wing enough, which just seems bizarre to me.

At this point the Dems should vote in McCarthy just to give them what they don't want. He's too weak to get enough votes so how is he going to whip anyone for something actually important?

Enough of my dumb thoughts and back to up late with Congress where we will keep voting until we can own them libs.

Nah, I think they should let it play out to its ultimate conclusion. If you win a "majority" and you cannot lead that "majority", you don't have a "majority". The house is going to just be a shit show anyway. Jim Jordan will spend the entire 2 years looking into conspiracies and trying to unearth the secrets of the illuminati. Nothing productive will get accomplished because the "majority" of the Republicans have forgotten how to believe in policy and purpose. They are not able to define their belief system, because they continually change, or because it is just concepts, not policy.

McCarthy will likely win, but he is damaged goods at this point. The next two years will be very pointless in terms of actually getting anything done in Congress.

Actually, it will be devastating. We'll stop funding Ukraine and Russia will annex large parts of the country, murdering loyal Ukrainians by the hundreds of thousands, and worse. The US will default on its debt for the first time ever and destroy the economy in the process, throwing the disabled and vulnerable elderly out into the streets with literally nothing. The environment? More money for fossil fuels companies! Ad infinitum...

I'm very pessimistic.

Yea, I think it will be interesting to see how the D's play the game though. In the end they only need 15 members from the R's to join them to actually try and get policy passed. Although the House has much fewer moderates on either side (thanks gerrymandering), they still exist.

With 20 R's seeming to be in crazytown permanently now, maybe there are 20 other R's that want to actually see our government move forward and will work on bipartisan efforts and projects.

I'm always optimistic though. ;)

When one thinks their opinion is more important and above everyone else's, despite factual information.

Soldiers from the War of 1812 were given similar land grants in my native region of northeastern lower Michigan. These grants were seldom ever seen by the grantee as that part of MI (then the Michigan Territory) was literal wilderness and only accessible by boat through the Great Lakes (Erie than Huron).

Our area of Oakland County was originally called "Pierce" after it had been granted to Benjamin Pierce, older brother of Franklin Pierce, while he was commanding Fort Holmes and Fort Mackinaw during the War of 1812. Our elementary school, one of the main roads through town, and a bunch of other stuff are named for him even though he never resided anywhere near here.

This is true!

Question is who will the speaker be? McCarthy lost the first two votes, and so they are trying for a 3rd...

I'm predicting McCarthy will agree to some concessions in the House Rules for the new term and will secure enough votes for the speakership today (Wednesday) or tomorrow.

The GOP needs to just complain that the speakership vote is rigged. :troll:

I know the answer is likely No, but do you think there is anyone in the Republican party that could get the votes of enough members of both sides of the isle to get elected to the speaker role? I am thinking of a more centrist person who has shown their ability to not be a Trump following robot. I don't think it is Liz Cheney, but someone along those lines.

But the equally likely scenario is moderate Rs voting for the Dem candidate for Speaker.

That would be amazing to see happen and would be one for the record books.

I think that is a little less likely given the Republicans have majority in the house. I would love to see a day however that they would be able to find compromise and move forward with a unified vision for this nation.

Oh look Frosty just entered the 5th level of Hell...

I think the reality is that either something so catastrophic will occur that it forces them to come together or we spiral down to a civil war. The egos on each side will never allow compromise otherwise.

This is what they do instead of actually governing. Playing Middle School games and trying to burn someone else.
It is all sound bites and "wins". No policies, no leadership, and no greater good thoughts.

As Dan Crenshaw said, the lawmakers are only opposing McCarthy to gain notoriety.

“This is such a childish attempt at gaining more and more attention,” Crenshaw said on Fox News ahead of the Speaker vote on Tuesday. “They’ve got nobody. And even if they did, I promise you, there’s a ton of Republicans who will not vote for them.

His definition as a squatter depends on the kind of stakes he uses to pitch his tent there. Maybe he just has a quilt thrown across some ladder back chairs.

I was thinking about the drama in the house today, and I am happy about it. I think that it hopefully is sending a message to the Trump republicans that Trump is not in charge anymore and they will not follow his direction.

This is going to be a fun two years as a federal employee when the shut down the government because they won't pass a budget.

According to The Daily Beast, Santos official website says he voted 'nay' on the omnibus budget bill - that vote was on December 23rd? He showed up for the first time in Washington on January 3rd? Still has not been sworn in because there is no speaker. Interesting.

Hey dvd, I see you have 2 governors in Arizona - the won that was elected in sworn in & the one who lost and now calls herself the "duly elected governor"

Sounds like Stacey Abrams...

Yep, Crazy Lady has Tom Petty on repeat and won't back down. At least Stacey has half a brain and some policy ideas. This one is just all in on elections are rigged because I didn't win. It doesn't help that one of our counties screwed up the vote count by 500 votes. Wouldn't have mattered in the gov race, but AG was a 500 vote race.

I still think part of the problem is that news outlets - not the major ones - pick up these stories and try to sensationalize it to get views. If we just ignore the losers they will magically go away when no one pays attention to them.

I'd be spending my time trying to flip a handful of votes from the the Republican ranks to Jeffries.

This current party politics fiasco is case study #12 why political parties are terrible and should be banned.

If i am McCarthy, I am withdrawing, and taking my super pac monies and annihilating the group of 5 (gatez, bobert, etc) and finding candidates to oust them.

Well.. glad these 20 can prevent congress from getting business done.. even if it is business that needs not be done.

Now that I have dug into it further, I did not realize that the holdouts were pro-trump. At this time McCarthy should be life F-it and start conversations with the democrats to see what common ground they can find.
