The Republican Party no longer exists. It just hasn't formally changed names. It is completely unrecognizable from what it was less than 20 years ago.
Let's remember that Richard Nixon was a Republican. Watergate (and the fact that he was a giant asshole) aside, he did accomplish a list of positive things, things today's Republicans would cringe at. He ended the draft, founded the EPA, dedicated 100m to fighting cancer (which later led to the creation of national cancer centers), and gave Native Americans rights to tribal self-determination and returned their sacred lands. These are all issues that Republicans now wouldn't endorse or really even care about. They actively seek to de-regulate the EPA, have no interest in giving Americans money for anything related to improving their health, and could give a rats ass about Native Americans.
