NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Political Discussion Thread

I enjoy watching Fox News (and Sean Hannity specifically) try and block for Trump. It is humorous inasmuch as there is nothing else to do about it but laugh. Seriously, this guy is terrible. And yet, people still defend him. And I have facebook posts which seem to believe, "He is still better than Hillary!".

Maybe so, and he was created because the democrats put Hillary up instead of someone who wasn't damaged goods, but this is an embarrassment for our country. For Trump. He can't like looking like a naive child. That isn't his style. The next week should be interesting.

I'm not normally one to give credence to conspiracy theories, but Trump's actions at Helsinki are making it increasingly more difficult to explain away how a sitting American President would side with the KGB (or GRU) over the unanimous conclusion by all US intelligence agencies that Russia meddled in our 2016 elections, without having to resort to some sort of explanation like Putin's got something really bad on Trump.

Expect much MUCH more Russian interference in our elections in the future thanks to the Cheetoh

It is reaching a point that many of the conspiracy theories are offering much simpler/logical explanations than the current explanations. For example, it is approaching the point that this story of Trump becoming a Russian asset in 1987 doesn't seem farfetched.

Most conspiracy theories of the past are debunked with relative ease. The ones about Trump are, objectively, remaining plausible.

Look at the Russian state media narrative. It tells you all you need to know about Trump's relationship with Putin. There is a pile of evidence rivaling the Empire State Building regarding Russia being a serious threat to the U.S., and no evidence of the EU or NATO undermining the U.S. Yet he continues to attack the EU and NATO while embracing PRK and Russia?!?

I have avoided calling Trump treasonous or a traitor, because it is hard bringing yourself to say that about an elected official. Unfortunately, I see zero evidence of him being a patriot and and mounting pile of evidence that we have an American traitor as the leader of our country. Trump would be wise to study Louis XVI.

Trump would be wise to study Louis XVI.

tRump - wise - study in the same sentence. That's hilarious!

VicePresident Pence has summed it up nicely for us as he praises the Trump-Putin summit: "Disagreements between our countries were discussed at length, but what the world saw, what the American people saw, is that Pres. Donald Trump will always put the prosperity and security of America first." :lmao:

After the past two days in DC and Philly, I am quite sure of 4 things.
1) the founding fathers would be seriously pissed at what the government has become and that Donald Trump is running the show.
2) We as a society have gotten so far off track from where the founders wanted it to go, I really question if it can ever get back to the way it should be.
3) The foundations of this country are Christian, but people the founders wanted people to worship in any way they choose as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others... but it can still offend the hell out of them.
4) Church was second only to the local taverns in terms of importance.

My first though on that speech was what about the guy in the audience who was tripping hard? Oh wow man. All this stuff I'm seeing is not really happening?

I need to ask a few of the farmers I know if they'll be on the welfare.

Very cool map and use of the software.

According to the map, my precinct went for Trump but he didn't get a majority of the vote. Most of the surrounding precincts went for Clinton.

Something interesting that I learned from the map is that the precinct I live in has a non-contiguous piece that is completely surrounded by another precinct.

Wow, JNA, a fascinating but depressing find.

Suddenly a lot is starting to make sense. I was in Altoona, PA last month and it looked like the whole town was full of Trump supporters. (They have a look you know). Downtown, the neighborhoods on the west side, I saw a lot of really trashy people everywhere. I began to wonder, does anyone in this town have more than a high school degree?

Voting records show that Blair County went 75% Trump, a depressing figure indeed. But surely there had to be some blue enclaves, maybe I just missed them on our three day visit. Now that I see your map, it turns out my worst fears were realized. There simply are no blue enclaves in all of Altoona. Nearby Johnstown and State College had at least some blue areas. But not Altoona.

Needless to say, I won't be going to Altoona again anytime soon. While I realize it's impossible to avoid every red county, it has risen above the threshold of 67% which is the maximum amount of Trump support I will tolerate. Now with this map available, if red counties are unavoidable, I can at least try and avoid the deepest red parts of those counties and only patronize businesses that are in areas where at least 1/3 of the voters went for Clinton and actively seek out the blue enclaves. I don't think that is being unreasonable.

Jim Jordan for speaker? Please tell me the Republicans aren't that stupid...

Yes they are..as if you really have to ask.

He gerrymandered himself into a deep red part of Ohio so he's never had any serious opposition. It's depressing having to hear the filth and lies that spew out of his mouth everyday.

Those of us in the know.....know Kingman, Arizona is FULL of BATSHIT Crazy.

That is all.....

Northern Arizona is full of weird. Kingman, Morman fundamentalists, and much, much more. The two do not exist in the same town FYI.

First, we must agree on the need to shield communal spaces from politicization.

Second, we must work together to resist the politicization of everything.

Third, we must discourage harassment of public figures and incursions into their private lives.
is essential to creating a safe environment that continues to attract good people to public service.

Fourth, liberals and conservatives alike should commit themselves to rhetorical disarmament.

Anyone following the 3-D printer/assault rifle case? Interesting turn of events; one can make an assault rifle using a 3D printer now. No longer would terrorists, criminals and psychopaths need to bother purchasing one; now they can simply 'print' their own weapon using a 3D printer by downloading the plans and bypass all background checks, dealer licensing, etc. Interestingly, the defenders of this argue this is a 1st Amendment issue. Downloading plans represents the exchange of information/ideas.

Scary stuff.

I agree with you on this one. The lower for the AR-15 is the one component of the gun that requires background checks. I have heard arguments about making a gun that does not have metal in it, but I question if that is possible given the mechanics of the gun, but the lower could be a composite that would just not be as durable as the metal. Regardless, there still needs to be background checks on these.

The interesting question is when it comes to CNC machines. You can purchase a billet CNC lower from some of these companies with custom details that still meets NATO spec standards and still requires background checks, but I question how reliably available those plans are. Granted a CNC is much more expensive than a 3D printer, but you can still get one for under $1,000.

Tomorrow's the big day!

The candidate for whom I've been volunteering...we should know by about 9:30 pm Tuesday. It's been a wild strange ride.

This seems a safe place to gripe...there are two candidates on the ballot for the Dem nomination, and the other one is a former early elem teacher/day care center owner/toy store owner/now organic farmer. (HR person: "job hopper") She's female.

Her team has sent trolls and moles to our FB to taunt my candidate (male) and make snarky comments. When we've lined up for parades, at the last moment her gang jumps in front of us. (What didn't they learn in kindergarten?) We had a volunteer helping Fred pack up our expo booth; they determined which car was his, and put their signs on it.

This week some little old lady messaged us on FB, told Fred he should "let Cathy do this job because she's a woman." One of her minions keeps posting that she's "the only person who can take down Justin Amash." Minion's husband claims that Fred gets such a charge out of preaching one sermon a week that "he won't be able to abandon his flock."

According to the FEC website, she's been blowing through cash she didn't have (I remember what a $37 or $38 "bank charge" is) and ended Q2 with all of 1600. We had $27k, and I was asked to spend $15k on ads, etc. So I did! Digital ads, print media (the Black and Latinex newspapers), FB ads, robocalls, robotexts, a mailing that went to 18k voters, plus canvassing. The Black churches had him in to speak at their services, and then volunteers leafleted the cars.

My candidate's been a minister for 40 years, and he's pretty good at turning the other cheek. I don't pray, but I am hoping for karma.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a shirt like this out here.

It's this kind of childish garbage that really has me turned off politics. It's all come down to name calling and trolling. I can understand a practical joke like putting flyers on the other guys car once, but it's just a one time joke. This lady sounds just crazy.

^ DVD - How's it looking in Kansas? Is your incumbent governor going to lose his primary to the Trump-endorsed candidate?

I went to vote in my primary today at 7:30 a.m. and was already #46. That seems like pretty good turnout for a midterm primary, especially 30 minutes after the polls open. I was planning to walk the two blocks to my polling place and then walk home and drive to work but it was so muggy out I drove otherwise I would have been sweating through my clothes too early in the day.

Everything keeps saying Kansas is a tied race in the GOP primary. Everyone I talk to wants to see Colyer (incumbent) win over Kobach. The problem is Colyer is associated with Brownback (last gov) and his failed ideas. Neither one is a winner to me, but I'll take the devil you know over the crackpot that's out to make money. You can decide which is which.

I didn't see any big surprises in our primary here other than the Democratic race for governor being closer than I expected and the Republic race being further apart. Locally, turnout was very high (probably due to a couple of open U.S. House races) and there were widespread reports of precincts running out of ballots in my county and then the Clerk's office scrambling all evening to get more ballots printed and delivered in time. I'm glad I don't work in that office this morning!

I know it's an added expense, but here's a novel idea: send enough ballots for each registered voter to each precinct before the election! :r:

I was really hoping Danny O'Connor would flip Ohio's 12th. He seems like a decent (hopefully) Catholic Irishman of vaguely progressive stock, which is still better than the GOP alternative by a longshot. But its looking like he's going to lose by less than 2000 votes. UGH.

O'Connor actually winning would have been icing on the cake, but the mere fact that there was even a contest at all in Ohio's 12th is the real story. This does not bode well for the GOP in November.

So Kobach, the all illegals vote guy is winning by 191 votes. If they do a recount the Secretary of State has to oversee it. Guess who the Secretary of State is and guess who won't even recuse himself. His excuse, he doesn't have to because the count is done by the counties, not the state. Then it's easy to look good and recuse yourself you idiot!

dvd...you had one job....:D

I'm just wondering when Kansas will stop trying to elect these crackpots. I stand no chance of election being only mildly crazy. I mean the dude has cost our state millions and has plans to basic bankrupt the state by cutting all taxes (except personal taxes) and still 41% of the voters voted for this guy.

They were blindsided by the high numbers of A/V ahead of time, and presumably had no data to extrapolate from. In years past, I've been the (under 100)th voter at my precinct at 5 pm or later.

Given the recent primaries, what do you think will happen this fall? Do you think the Rs will hold the House and Senate or do you think the Dems will swing the power to the left?

Personally, I dont think it will matter. We are at such a sad state with the Federal Government that I have no belief in either party. I already know that I will have a split ticket this fall. Will you?

predictions for November

Dems pick up 28 seats in the House (achieving a majority) and lose one seat in the Senate. Female candidates across the board end up winning in more than 50% of the races they're running (but Whitmer loses a nailbiter in :mi:'s gubernatorial)

Do you think the Rs will hold the House and Senate or do you think the Dems will swing the power to the left?

GA 14 probably isn't flipping to blue.

A Democratic candidate for Congress in a conservative north Georgia district who was convicted this week of drunken driving challenged the officers who stopped him to a fight and repeatedly insulted the county he was running to represent.

Steven Lamar Foster boasted about how many times he’s been arrested and called the officers who arrested him “Barneys” in dash-cam footage of the September arrest obtained by The Dalton Daily Citizen-News.

“Eleven years I served this county,” Foster told police in the dash-cam video. “I hate this county. I prayed to God that he would curse it. And guess what? He did. Man, I saw it hit and cursed, and I saw people laid off right and left — white people. I hate this county ...”

Foster is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Graves in the northwest Georgia district, a deep-red bastion where Democrats have struggled to gain traction.

He was jailed Monday after a jury convicted him of driving under the influence, a misdemeanor violation until the fourth offense. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for next week, and Foster could face possible prison time of 10 days to a year.

Foster, 61, has been investigated by the U.S. Army on allegations he stole surplus military boats to deliver humanitarian aid. Honduran police charged four of his charitable group’s employees with cocaine trafficking.

And he has been stripped of his Georgia medical license and slapped with hundreds of thousands of dollars in local, state and federal tax liens. He now owns the site of an “adults only, clothing-optional lifestyle retreat” in North Georgia.

After he was stopped by police in September 2017, Foster encouraged them to record his statements so he could later get a copy of the footage. He requested his blood samples be sent to CIA headquarters and said he was unfazed by the threat of prison.

“Go right ahead, I’ve had them pinched before by Colombian police,” Foster tells the arresting officer as he was handcuffed, according to the newspaper. “It’s all right, I’ve been in jail in six damn countries and the state of Mississippi.”

It’s not immediately certain whether he’ll remain on the ticket. Dan Lovingwood, the chair of the Democratic 14th Congressional District, told the Daily Citizen-News that Foster is unlikely to step down.

"He would not have taken this to trial if he had thought he would be found guilty,” said Lovingwood. “I have no comment to make other than that. He's still in the race. He seems more determined than ever to continue.”

GA 14 probably isn't flipping to blue.

Normally I would agree, but we live in bizarre times now where a significant percentage of the electorate have decided that things like character or experience are no longer relevant considerations in determining a candidate's suitability for office. I wish it were not so.

Ah...GA 14 was never going to flip to blue this cycle. Rs outnumber the Ds in that part of Georgia 4 to 1.

So, well, yeah, I guess your statement above is true...for the Dems in the primary. :D

I doubt anything flips in Kansas. I know Dems are hoping to flip the governor, but for me it's not about R or D it's about not F#$ing up the state anymore than it already is. Gotta do those minimum things like comply with court orders to fund education or stop stealing from the KDOT fund. Maybe the state can actually pay it's share into the retirement fund. It's the little things.

The House goes to the Dems. The GOP is just in gigantic trouble in their suburban districts. I do think that 2018's election will be labeled "the year of the woman" as I expect to see them dominate races. I also expect to see liberal veterans gain a foothold... I'm predicting a win for Joseph Kopser over Chip Roy for Lamar Smith's old seat. He is outraising and outspending Roy, which is surprising. Kopser is on the moderate side of progressive, and earned his nomination partly on ability to appeal to disaffected Republicans. Roy is an insider's insider, and I think is too conservative for what the 21st district has become. My area is pretty purple, but I've seen a lot more Kopser signs. I haven't seen a single Chip Roy sign. This district was originally gerrymandered to lean Republican, but there's been a TON of growth in the I-35 corridor. Those moving in are typically coming from areas with more progressive politics, with a lot of bleed over coming from the Austin blueberry.

I'm predicting 51 seats for the Democrats in the Senate. I'm now ready to predict that Beto O'Rourke unseats Ted Cruz to earn Texas its first statewide Democrat win since the early 90s. Cruz has even taken to defending Alex Jones in recent days. Cruz has trouble getting support from other Republicans because, well, he's kind of a prick and a bad team player. He is not particularly well-liked, and many feel he has abandoned the state in pursuit of a national profile. Texans have never reacted well to that. O'Rourke is running the best grassroots campaign I've ever seen in Texas.

Another example of pResident tRump administration’s hypocrisy on immigration. Last week, Melania Trump’s parents received citizenship using the same family-based migration method which the president derides as “chain migration” and wants to severely limit. Funny how things work like that.

He wan't being hypocritical in this case. He was actually trying to stop family based chain migration. Think about it. Your wife hates you and wants the MIL to move in. Wouldn't you do everything in your power to stop it too?

Florida GOP candidate Melissa Howard apologizes for fake diploma, stays in race
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-news-ny-gop-florida-fake-diploma-20180814-story.html

In her own quote she said she was wrong and set a bad example, but she wants to win and lead by example. What example? Your bad example? You not going to quit even though you got caught lying?
(Imagine how that could read for a murder suspect - I didn't mean to kill that person, I just picked up the gun, pointed it at him and pulled the trigger. That was a bad decision, but I'll stay free and lead by example)

Also from the article - In her statement, Howard said, "It was not my intent to deceive or mislead anyone." It didn't say what her intent was. - so how is it not and intent to deceive when you posted a picture of a fake diploma to say you did graduate when you didn't?

It was definitely her intent to deceive and mislead. Not only did she fail to immediately own up when called out on the fraudulent credentials, but she doubled down on the lie by (according to some of the stories) traveling to her mother's house to get her framed "diploma" post pictures of it online and in press releases and call the journalists reporting on the story liars. In my book, she's the absolute personification of the word "turd".

This story is big in my parts, mainly because Miami is the Harvard of the west. Maybe she thought she was putting down the U instead of Miami (Ohio). Wally Szczerbiak and Ben Roethlesberger would be sad.

It's been on the news a lot here in Metro Detroit too, probably because there are a lot of local Detroiters who have their second (or primary?) residence down in that district around Sarasota and Bradenton and AMI.

So my question is did she have the fake diploma already framed and hung up, or did she have to have it all done? If she had to have it done, who gave her this idea? I assume she has a campaign manager who probably would have turned this down right?

My personal theory is that she never really graduated but told her parents she did and brought home the framed fake diploma for them years ago and that this single lie just kept growing and growing, and now here we are. Like her mom called after the controversy broke and was just like "honey, come home and get your diploma!!" and she just simply didn't know what else to do.
