NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Political Discussion Thread

Oh bummer, she dropped out after all.

I was really hoping to see her continue to wallow through this mess.

“I made a terrible error in judgement,”

Howard’s announcement ends one of the more bizarre chapters in Southwest Florida politics and brings relief to many local Republicans who worried her campaign was embarrassing the local party and making it a national laughingstock.

As of right now, there are two items on the ballot for this fall that would amend would remove some of the powers from the Governor and give them to the state legislature.

It is nothing more than a power grab that weakens the power of the governor and results in less checks and balances.

The story just won't quit -

Though she has now left the race, the story may not be over. Howard could face charges under Florida statute 817.566, which states:

"Any person, with intent to defraud, misrepresents his or her association with, or academic standing or progress at, any post-secondary educational institution by falsely making, altering, simulating, or forging" a degree is guilty of a first degree misdemeanor."

Former Manatee Republican Party Chairwoman Donna Hayes told ABC7 she is contacting State Attorney Ed Brodsky's office to press charges against Howard.
"She has clients and also donors that donated to her on the basis of her education," explained Hayes.
Derek Byrd, a criminal defense attorney in Sarasota, told ABC7 Howard could face up to one year in jail if charged, but added it's unlikely since she appears to have no prior criminal record.

As a former North Carolinian I've been sort of watching what has been going on down there. I don't know if there is a legislature out there that is acting more like a bunch of whiny babies because they aren't getting their way than the folks in the GOP in the NC House. I do take some solace in the fact that a lot of the stuff they've managed to pass over the past couple of years keeps gettin shot down by the state and federal courts.

I plan to straight up vote every single amendment down. It's just an incredible abuse of power. The legislature and Cooper have been fighting tooth and nail all session. He holds the record for the most vetos now, but considering that the veto power hasn't been around long, I guess that's not that bad. The voter ID amendment will be a huge legal battle and will almost certainly end up with the Supreme Court. The stupid GOP voter ID bill got torched once already by a higher court, so their recourse was to amend the entire damn constitution. It's insane.

I mean, Omorosa... geez.
I know. I'm not really sure what to think about this.

My current plan is to wait for more time/information/audio to come out over the next months/year then decide if she's just a snake or a truthful snake.

If a narcissistic sycophant attention whore can help take a narcissistic attention whore out of 'power'...I'll take it...as those are the cards we're dealt.

I generally have a yawning disinterest in politics. I'm not sure I have ever even looked at this thread before. (So I'm probably doing something wrong, but it seems like this belongs here and not in Random Thoughts.)

But here is Trump swearing he would never use bad words to call people names -- like the N word -- while referring to "that Wacky and Deranged Omarosa."

:not:

Color me unconvinced.

John Brennan. former CIA director, has security clearance stripped.

President Trump cited Brennan's 'erratic conduct and behavior' and 'wild outbursts on the internet and television' as some of the reasons for the move. Brennan, who led the CIA during Obama's second term, is among Trump's most-outspoken critics.

Does the President read his own tweets?

(shakes head)

It is a witch hunt... huh?

Manafort is getting what he deserves. Hopefully more light will be shed on these types of systems and the payments that politicians are getting to lobby after their office.

I think it will be interesting to see all the hypocrocy around impeachment from the R's and D's. The R's will claim this is crazy, and not warranted!! The D's will claim it is it necessary!! Obviously they were on the other side when Clinton was impeached.

Sean Hannity is hilariously stupid. Him going off about Clinton emails is sad, yet funny.

True, but it's all for naught. We all know that Trump will pardon him they day he is sentenced. The only silver lining is that sentencing will be delayed as long as possible so Manafort will at least have to sit in jail for all that time. Of course, once he is pardoned, he will still have his millions squirreled away in offshore accounts.

I think that pardon would seal Trump's fate and you would likely see impeachment & conviction.

Not if the Republicans maintain control of the Senate and House. I find it disturbing that, with few exceptions, the candidates that Trump is stumping for are winning their primaries over "moderate" GOP opponents. It seems to be getting worse as we approach the mid terms as voters quickly forget Parkland, Helsinki, etc. That's just what the GOP is counting on: Lack of voter attention span on part of the Democrats as his Base gets more rabid and dig their heels deeper in support of Trump.

We can hope.

Mueller needs to drop the hammer no later than October 1, 2018.

That still could be too early given Democratic voter apathy and the propensity of the G.O.P to capitalize on this and stoke the Base. Just look what happened in late October, 2016, Hillary was way ahead in the polls at the beginning of the month before Comey dropped the bomb and ruined everything.

I think the deeper into October that Mueller can reveal that smoking gun, the better.

California Republican Rep. Hunter (& wife) indicted on misuse of campaign funds for personal trips, clothing, tequila, and similar items. The list includes shorts he bought at a golf shop and indicated the expense was for "balls for wounded warriors"8-!

I can understand the tequila, but golf shorts? Do you get a free bowl of soup with that?

I’m starting to think we have our future president in front of us leading the investigation. After all, he has the unique knowledge to develop the necessary laws and constitutional amendments to prevent this from happening again. Basically, create a "lost term" in which he is elected as an independent with no intent for a second term, with an almost singular purpose to develop the necessary Constitutional Amendments and clarifications to prevent someone so comprehensively corrupt from attaining Federal elected office, and to create methods to address the gerrymandering that serves as the basis for this occurring.

The venue is across the street from my office, a good day to RJ to avoid crowd & traffic ?

Regardless of who is in office (either as Pres or VP), if your office is near either the venue or the route from the airport to the venue, it's always a good idea to RJ and avoid such visits (unless, of course, one wants to got to the event itself). The current and former leaders of the Executive Branch have a long and glorious history of completely screwing up traffic in Atlanta.

Saw that, sent word to Sousaphones Against Hate. They're too far away though.

I just love the fact that sousaphone and tuba (I'm assuming) players are out there combating hate in a good and somewhat comedic way.

When you all elect me president I will be sure to visit every town just to [STRIKEOUT]bestow the honor of my presence on your city[/STRIKEOUT] screw with traffic.

To be fair, Atlanta traffic is pretty bad. They had worse traffic than LA last I heard. I have heard they did a study for adding another ring road to try to get some relief and concluded that it would just make things worse.

Don't even get me started on Atlanta. I was there only once and found it to be quite and unpleasant experience. It looked like a lot of the old historic fabric had been ripped out and replaced with sleek and overblown skyscrapers. And that was over 20 years ago. I can only imagine how much worse it is now.

My brother, who teaches at UGA in Athens, said he "dies a little inside" every time he is forced to go into or near Atlanta.

You are correct about another ring road making things worse. One of the basic principals of transportation as it relates to geography is that every time you build a new road to ease congestion on other roads, the aggregate amount of traffic ALWAYS increases. They are trying this in Houston, a third ring road, which will undoubtedly result in disaster.

Nope, and it's not even close (I spent a lot of time in LA the first half of this year). In all fairness, though, I do have a home-field advantage in Atlanta, so I understand how folks just passing through might get frustrated.

Not disputing that was the conclusion of some of the modeling, but that is not why the proposed Outer Perimeter/Northern Arc was dropped. And, some sections of it were de facto constructed by widening existing roads.

No one asked you, bro. ;)

Sounds like you never ventured off the interstate (or Peachtree)...also sounds like you forgot about a dude named Sherman and his impact on the built environment in Atlanta.

Bless his heart...

Back in June I spent about 10 days in Downtown and Midtown Atlanta. Previously, my only experience with Atlanta was passing through on I-75 a few times a year on our way to Florida, or maybe an overnight stay near the airport if I had oddly timed connecting flights. I was staying in Midtown right near Piedmont Park and early every morning I would take the Metro out 8+ miles and run back in time for the start of my meetings so I got a pretty good view of all sorts of neighborhoods and traffic. In the early evenings I would go for a run through the residential neighborhoods closer to my hotel so I would see some evening traffic. I also went on a few organized excursions in the area in the afternoons and evenings and while traffic wasn't great (there were a couple of roads that seemed like they had perpetually heavy traffic - I'm looking at you Ponce de Leon Avenue!), it was nowhere near as bad as what I've experienced in Los Angeles or DC or much of South Florida.

As far as historic character, at least on the east side around Midtown, there seemed to be a significant amount of historic homes still standing and there were plenty of small commercial areas that I found that were still relatively near the core but had a much smaller scale (Little 5 Points, the areas around Decatur and Emory University, Piedmont Heights...) than the built-up Downtown and Midtown. Once you get a block off of Peachtree, even the small area between Downtown and Midtown had a much more pleasant scale with a lot of low-rise and mid-rise buildings.

I enjoyed Atlanta and found it much more pleasant than I thought I would. There is definitely a lot of sprawl but after spending some time there I think it gets a worse rap than it deserves.

On a side note, once I got home I was talking about my recent trip to Atlanta with my elderly neighbor's son who had moved back home to help care for him over the past few years. I knew the son was a doctor of some renown who works with rare and infectious diseases but I didn't know that before moving back here to Detroit he had been living in Atlanta and working at the CDC. I found out that he still has a house down there in the Virginia Highlands/Druid Hills area just a mile or so from where I was staying while I was down there. I told him that if he ever wants to rent the house out for a week or two my wife and I would happily head down there.

Poor 'ol Ponce has the misfortune of being the only road that directly connects Midtown Atlanta with Decatur - there are several other routes between the two areas (home-field advantage!), but Ponce gets slammed with traffic because it's the only straight shot.

Don't know if you passed the Krispy Kreme on Ponce @ Argonne Ave, but that place is a hoot in the early morning - businessmen, dealers, college students, cops, and hookers all in the same line to buy doughnuts.

I did see that Krispy Kreme on one of my runs and thought about taking a couple dollars with me so I could stop and get a couple donuts and eat them while I went the final few blocks back to the hotel but decided against it since I didn't think anybody wanted to be in line next to a sweaty gross runner. I did make a couple trips to Mary Mac's across the street from there though (not while in running gear). I told my wife I would move to ATL just to be able to have chicken from there every day.

You forgot the part about the stock market crashing if he goes away.

So anyway, my fortune cookie of today brought this up, "Don't worry about the stock market. Invest in family."

tRump Organization CFO Allan W. has been granted immunity.
National Enquirer head David Pecker has been granted immunity.
This could be very interesting. :h:

Yeah but I'm sure the city quickly rebuilt after 1865. What happened to all that architecture from 1865-1930?

I was downtown but don't remember the street. I also remember walking along a road north of town that had a lot of bookstores in the mid-1990s. I did get a ticket for jaywalking, which I admit had added to my distaste for Atlanta.

Now the news is reporting

preparing for possibly thousands of protesters to arrive

At least two major anti-Trump demonstrations — one expected to draw thousands of activists in caravans from three states — are planned in response to President Donald Trump's rally here Thursday night.
