Do you think that it will get bad enough that we will have to go through another revolution? The other important question is that of division. Is there enough of a population that could can agree on anything to even make anything like that a possibility in today's society.

NO I am not calling for revolution, no I don't want to overthrow the government. (I know "they" are watching) But I am curious if you think that it will get so bad, that protests turn into a revolt.
 
The U.S. is currently in uncharted territory. You've got a real possibility that the President was elected under dubious conditions that may even reach the point of treason. You've got a Congress unwilling to do their jobs, putting party before country. I mean, at least do a meaningful investigation! And you've got a Congress that has gerrymandered itself to have no fear of the public and noncompetitive elections. So Congress can't function to implement Constitutional amendments. The challenge is that this spills down into the state legislatures as well, resulting in a Convention of States not being a good option either. The most respected branch in public opinion is not elected, and is now under attack from the executive. You've got open revolt of the bureaucracy. You've got an intel community that has lost such faith in Congress that they resorted to the press. And all of this is wrapped up in a tidy bow of the Constitutional separation of powers & powers of the executive in particular being essentially disregarded over the span of a few decades and now coming home to roost.

You start thinking about the legally accessible routes to change given that description above, and the options get real limited and real scary. You start having conversations about open revolts. Suddenly secession movements become less of a joke. The word "coup" gets used in reference to us, not some random underdeveloped country half a world away. The daunting aspect is that we have 325 million people, a complex economy with the pressure of "leading the free world..." contrasted with organizing less than 4 million people during the Revolution and reorganizing 31 million following the Civil War.

From watching, this is what I see as critical Constitutional amendment needs:
  • Senate maximum term limit of three consecutive full terms
  • Representative maximum term limit of five consecutive full terms
  • Balanced budget
  • Restriction on redistricting to not divide block groups, metrics for compactness, etc. and a non-partisan commission to implement
  • Implement instant runoff / ranked choice voting (to enable alternative parties without people fearing a "wasted vote")

Truthfully, I'd like to see a parliamentary democracy, which is what every other "free" country uses and has been a far more effective form of governance. I mean, look at what "newer" democracies have in their Constitutions and compare it to ours. Look at the real debate that occurs. Look at the benefits of coalition governance that have resulted. There's been a lot of good development over the last few hundred years, but American ego prevents us from actually considering the room for improvement. And that comes from misplaced reverence for the founding fathers. The founding fathers would be furious if they saw how they were held up as deities and their accomplishments considered perfect without need for change as the country's needs changed.

If this reaches the point of a revolution in the classic sense you describe, then we don't come out of it as a single country. I suspect you end up with 3-4. The city vs. rural issues make this particularly interesting.

I don't get too worked up about ambassadorships since there is a loooonnnggg history of them going to friends of the administration as rewards for helping get them elected or to folks who have served the DoD or State Department for years and want some cushy job in a tropical or desirable location for their final few years. While France is an important ally, for the most part it's the various ambassadorships to the UN or NATO or other international organizations that seem to matter more in terms of policy.
 

The difference, in my opinion, is the cited events all occurred prior to Watergate. There was still faith or trust in government, even if there was a recognition of "bad actors" in the government. I think that began to erode post-Watergate. With the advent of the internets, I think it is irreparably lost and the likelihood of tumultuous change is growing.

The NC legislature just introduced a bill to limit the Governor/Lt. Gov. terms to 2 years (currently at 4). I'm sure our GOP led group thinks it's a reasonable compromise given the Lt. Gov is a representative of their party, but it's not. It's set to go in effect Jan. 1 of 2021 if approved, so I'm not really sure of the intention there.

Tom Price's confirmation as HHS Sec means a special election (open, no primaries) for my Congressional district - current entry list is seven Rs, two Ds, and one Independent (so, yeah, there will be a runoff election as well).

It is this kind of stupidity that makes me worried about the future... not because of the Trump stepping down... I agree 100% with him on that one... but the rerun part. If Trump steps down, it progresses with the chain of command (VP, Speaker of the House.... and so on). If there is a connection made, Trump should be impeached or resign. If Pence was involved in it, then he too should resign. Michael Moore needs to shut the F*$# up because he is part of the reason that people don't trust the media anymore.

As for the leaks, I don't care how it was leaked, it is the information that was leaked that is concerning. I said the same thing about the Clinton information getting leaked and I am saying the exact same thing about the Trump information.

We as a society need to demand better.

I disagree on the impeachment. I'm beginning to think Pence was the golden goose, and Trump was the man to position him. Pence is far more becoming of GOP ideals, and from a standpoint of personality, more "electable". Thing is, he's too right to win a nationwide election. The GOP is in precarious waters for retaining power in 2020 right now because of this circus. What better way to re-position themselves as "good guys" for 2020 than torching their own man for the sake of the country? Lets parade an actual clown out in public and let him dig his own grave. You can't tell me they were completely unaware of Trump's ties to Russia, and I think it's no coincidence that Reince Priebus happens to be Chief of Staff. The ultimate goal in the next 8 years for the GOP is to secure those SCOTUS seats, so they cannot compromise the 2020 election by supporting Trump much longer as his approval ratings tumble. 4 years won't cut it, the sitting justices will most likely last longer than that. We've already seen the GOP begin to distance itself from the administration with Andy Puzder being forced to withdraw his nomination for lack of votes. The seriously backed moved to impeach will come directly from the GOP. No one talks about Trump seriously in my neck of the woods anymore, it's mostly joking now. Considering the 10,000 Trump Pence signs I saw leading up to the election...

Or I'm just a crazy conspiracy theory guy.

I do have concerns about the leaks. I think our government has spent a lot of time and money reviewing far less important things. They should be investigating both the information, which is damning, but also the leaks. I don't care if you think Trump is awful. I don't care if you politically wanted Clinton to win. You have a job. You have protocols and you have protections. Leaks are bad for any organization.

Personally I think if the House would do their jobs, we wouldn't have so many leaks. If we had Trump's tax returns, understood his business dealings, and the Russian connections, there would be fewer leaks.

Now this China thing, where Trump gets his trademark and backtracks on the one China policy? I mean it looks shady. But is it? We just don't know. Investigate and let us know one way or the other.

Leaks are bad for our Country. They are bad for the rule of law and the Democrats are hypocrites if they were saying how awful Snowden was, then are saying these leaks are necessary, blah blah blah. Leaks are occurring because our government is being so opaque. Transparency, beyond what is required by law would fix all of this. Trump is just not interested in being transparent, and we are all suffering for it.

Yeah, Michael Moore needs a remedial civics lesson.

I don't think this would happen, mainly because I don't see even in a worst case scenario succession going beyond a "President Paul Ryan" as far as GOP impeachment actions. I think they would be quite content with Ryan as President, and I'm pretty confident he is squeaky clean when it comes to treasonous acts & conflicts of interest. You see, I think they'd even be willing to roast Pence. This is why I think Reince Priebus being in the administration is no accident. I think he is likely the one leaking, to tell you the truth--that he is essentially an establishment spy.

But I'd like to tease out the hypothetical... on a topic that the Constitution appears silent on.

Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution provides in considerable detail for the election of the president. It suggests that once Congress has determined “the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes,” that Congress cannot then provide for a do-over second election. But this is a silent element... could the Congress choose to call a new election? Is "doubt about the legitimacy of the election" enough? My gut says the election is untouchable from the legislative branch aside from systematic impeachment.

I believe the judicial branch would have the ability to call for a new election. For that to occur though, any judge and SCOTUS would require additional evidence that proves infiltration of voting machines or altered the vote count. Do you think this is an actual possibility? Would direct evidence of interference by, say, FBI director Comey or some rogue element of the police state be enough?

Scott Pruitt is now the head of the EPA, and it sounds like there are a lot of people who don't like him. Based on his discussion with Bernie Sanders, it sounds like he admits that climate change is real, and while humans are not doing anything to help the situation, he is not willing to say that we are the cause of it.

What are you willing to do to use less fossil fuels? Both in your personal life and professional life.

Personally, we built an energy efficient house in a walkable community that is being designed to be environmentally friendly. However I still commute a good distance to work in an environmentally unfriendly vehicle. I try to eat locally, and it is a good thing I like BBQ.

I saw all these "outraged" people smash car and building windows and set fires. Yep, that sure is "going high." And please for the love of God don't say "they did it to the last president." That argument doesn't work with me and is the excuse of children. No one in this country acts like a grown-up anymore.

While it is true that CNN is a leftist propaganda, they are still a major media outlet and I think they have the right to be there.

I heard a clip of Trumps Infrastructure proposal from his speech last night. Sounded an awful lot like the "Shovel Ready Jobs" that Obama pitched years back.

So I watched the stupid thing last night.... because I do that.

Trump was very uncomfortable with the presentation. He was calm, which was awkward to watch. He isn't fluid. He isn't very good at reading a teleprompter.

What I heard him say though is that he wants to spend a lot of money. On defense, on infrastructure, on reform. He didn't say anything specific about where that money will come from, other than efficiencies and growth. As anyone who has ever looked for a second at the government budget knows, we aren't going to get $60B or $1T by those methods. Especially when he made it clear he still intends to reduce corporate tax rates and indvidiaul tax rates.

So let me do the math: More spending + Less Revenue = Lower National Deficit?

If the Republicans go along with this, they are the biggest hypocrites that exist. Didn't you just spend the last 8 years against all spending? Didn't you spend most of your time repealing ACA and investigating Benghazi, without any results? Mitch McConnell is everything that is wrong with our country. Ugh.

With that said, I look forward to seeing how Trump gets ACA repealed, keeps everyone on a healthcare plan, and makes it more affordable for everyone without mandating them to be on a plan. Let me know when you catch that unicorn.

I didn't listen to the speech, but hear he attempted in a most un-Trump-like fashion to say a few of the kumbayah-type platitude things that are standard fare for these sorts of speeches. No one can honestly think he believed or meant any of it.
 
You cannot spend more AND cut taxes. That is basic public finance. And if they do go down that road, so help me god I will run against Representative Lamar Smith (my US Rep) myself. They spent eight years prattling on about debt ceilings and "rampant spending" with Obama, and now it is suddenly okay because an old Republican white guy is in charge? I will call bullshit on that, and do so loudly.

And I'm sorry, but using the widow of a fallen Seal to trump up a raid that by every account at this point was an abject failure? That is the kind of cynicism I cannot stand.

And VOICE might be the single stupidest thing I've ever seen a President come up with. Crime involving undocumented immigrants is something I know a good bit about. Overwhelmingly, they commit crimes at a lower rate. Why? Because if they get caught, they know they get deported and they are hear to work hard to send money to their respective families. In fact, they are MORE likely to be victims of crime because they tend not to report to the police and are robbery targets due to frequently not using banks. And most that are not here under legal status are because they overstayed a visa.
 
I did not watch any of it last night because Trump's voice grates my nerves and I wasn't going to put myself through that. On conservative Facebook, though, a story about two Democrats not standing when Trump honored the widow of the fallen SEAL has taken over. I literally cannot find any coverage of this from anything that's not an overtly biased, conservative news site, though.

I'm sure other stuff had to have happened, though, right?
