NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Political Discussion Thread

What I find interesting about the abortion debate in the US is that it's an all or nothing debate, with no compromise.

Most countries that legalize abortion, including our "progressive" European neighbors, also place restrictions on abortion. You'll find in European countries that abortion is only legal for the first trimester (3-4 months) of the pregnancy. It's illegal after that except in very specific health/safety circumstances.

Yet somehow our laws and the abortion debate refuse to even consider these kinds of compromises. European feminists I've talked to (and I know quite a few) all find the concept of late term abortions horrendous and are against it, yet American feminist women refuse to even contemplate a restriction against late term abortions because of the "principle." Most of them don't even know that late term abortions are banned in most countries including the aforementioned "progressive" European nations. It's very interesting, and the abortion debate has indoctrinated both sides to refuse anything but a winner-take-all attitude with no compromises whatsoever.

I'm well aware that late abortions only represent a small minority of all abortions in the US and the vast majority are within the first few weeks of the pregnancy. Still, banning late term abortion for non health/safety reasons would go a long way to ending the abortion dissent in the US. Both sides get something without too much sacrifice or cost.

Growing up in rural part of Michigan, we realized many many years ago that our vote for president did not matter. Whatever way Detroit voted is the way the state went, so I know some people who never voted for a federal election because they felt it didn't actually matter. It the same in New York. In some states, it is the opposite.
Once upon a time it pretty much worked this way. You had four counties in SE Mich that called all the shots. But that started to change about 25 years ago, as the Land of Uptight Religious Dutchmen and Amway began to emerge as a potent political force at the state level. Nowadays Kent County is the new seat of power.

It didnt work that way this year! Detroit, Flint and Kalamazoo were practically the only places that didnt vote for Drumpf.

This year was a fluke. Think about it for a moment... Donald F-ing Trump got elected president. Very early in the year, I commented that there are a ton of voters who are sick and tired of politics as usual that they would rather see DC burn than elect another career politician. And that is exactly what happened. I think that Trump will be a terrible president, but perhaps this will be the pain of real change.

Throughout history, people have had controlled burns where they would light fire to the field to kill pests, weeds, and help fertilize the soil. I think that the best that a Trump presidency can do is this fire... not because he will be a good president, but because everything is going to get destroyed and we will have to start fresh in 4 years.

I mean seriously, think about it for a moment. You have Hillary the Clinton Machine on one side. She destroyed her primary competition who was very popular amongst several different groups. She has been in the political arena for decades. She was the first lady, a senator from New York, and Secretary of State.

Then on the other side you have a greedy developer businessman turned reality show host who is a total nut job. His own party did not want him, everything was stacked against him, and the polls indicated that he stood no chance. He uses social media to display is lunacy on a regular basis and was even mocked by the current president. Yet by some twisted plot, Trump won more states and got more electoral college votes than Hillary Clinton and will be the next President of the United States.

In short, society is so sick and tired of the crap that comes out of DC, they were willing to shove a bull into a china shop.

That, and Trump knew how to play the race card.

The recount

Of course I volunteered. Fascinating stuff.

--The election workers I watched may have been retirees in it for the $10/hr (and overtime on Saturday), but they were conscientious and thorough.
--Every work table had at least one R watcher, some had two. Today they'd been instructed to challenge the poll-worker's results on the basis of what our state AG is filing suit about.
--Observers are not supposed to touch the ballots. It was a surprise to see a little old lady in a red sweater and matching sticker reach for a pile of them.
--Had some good discussions with various people. Yesterday, a R observer asked why is Jill Stein even doing this. I cited the kajillion $$ raised over Thanksgiving, the Dan Savage piece (search on "reanimated corpse of Ralph Nader"), and irregularities discovered in Wisconsin (where there were more GOP ballots cast than are people in the electorate). She'd known nothing of this. I gave her some pointers (NYTimes, WaPo, Freep). And she wanted to know about my skin potions.
--Today my discussion partner was a Green. We went over food allergies, the election outcome, our speculation on how bad it's going to be. And cosmetics.
--Both days, my fellow Ds enjoyed seeing my blue pantsuits.

Real sorry that the court battle seems to have brought it to a close (as of this writing anyway).

What I find interesting is with the recount, Trump's lead actually grew. But this is the same state that tried to recall Scott Walker over public union collective bargaining restrictions, and the people of Wisconsin still reelected him.

I am also surprised that Michelle Obama has been so steadfast in telling people that they accept the results, it was a fair election, and it is done with.

Now to shift topics, how bad do you actually think that it will get with a Trump Presidency? At first I was thinking that it would not be too horrible, but now I question the stability of the federal government based on a combination of factors that include the appointment of unqualified cabinet members, Trumps continued twitter battles with people who don't like him, and an opposition that has become increasingly more vocal that they will become objectionists to everything that the GOP wants to do.

I don't think that it will spiral into civil war, but then again, I would not be surprised.

The millennials (and others) will start a game where someone will actually troll the Hairy Cheeto to try to get him to either retweet them (like the 16 y.o. he's already done that too/with) or more realistically, get him to blast them on a tweet. It will be like a social media badge of honor...

I am surprised that Trump has gone with a pretty old demographic for his picks. I thought he would try and invigorate the country by skewing younger with his picks. I think his push for all generals is going to lead to many of his picks to be voted strongly against.

I am hopeful that he starts picking more liberal people to balance out his stable of really crazy picks so far. Not sure one of his picks is really qualified. I guess that is outsiders changing the government? I am getting more uncomfortable with that hope though...

Trump's appointments are garbage, and he knows it. He's a vindictive petty man, these are all intended to get back at every single person who didn't vote for him. At least that's my theory.

Rep. Tom Price (even if one disagrees on his views on Obamacare) is supremely qualified for HHS, as is Mattis for SecDef.

Fair enough on Mattis. He is just probably more of a bulldog than that position should ever have. He may be qualified, but his temperament is certainly suspect.

Price though certainly isn't supremely qualified. Qualified, sure. He has been in the government system for a long time, so he has that going for him. I have never met an orthopedic surgeon who wasn't a pompous ass, so I guess I come at it from experience. Also he went to Michigan ;) He also hasn't been a doctor in 20 years. I guess he can claim he got a medical degree though. Honestly, he will be good for doctors, which I like. I think he will probably be really bad for patients though. Which I don't like.

Mark my words: he's going to nominate Sarah Palin for SecInt.

Four years probably isn't enough time to truly fuck the country over. But Trump sure looks like he's going to give it a run for his money.:-c

I'll admit to a bit of a bias on Price, as he is my Rep...

Side note: one of our junior folks went through a minor "they're going to abolish the EPA!" freak out this morning; I had to take him aside and explain just how damn difficult it is to revise regs, much less abolish an entire federal department...

I don't think he's a nut job. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt too in that I think he and his people were taking his chances at being president very seriously as soon as it became obvious he was going to win the primary.

I think I put DJT more in the role of a modern PT Barnum. He'll say anything for the moment and if you try to keep up with it and/or try to make sense of it, you get pretty much what the media coverage of him looks like at this point and throughout the campaign. He is not what makes me nervous, it is the combination of sycophants and opportunists who want to ride his wave that makes me far more concerned about the future. Sure, I think most folks would agree a change is needed in DC and change is pretty certain at this point. One can only hope that on the biggest and scariest issues such as foreign diplomacy, he thinks long and hard about the consequences of his actions (which I suppose is something we have to hope for in bated breath regardless of who's in charge).

So apparently Trump is going to work on being the producer for "Celebrity Apprentice" during is spare time as President of the United States of America.

He has no clue.

Teachers against Trump.

I have heard of similar situations, but this one is just the latest.

The complaint, sent by the Shawn Steel Law Firm to OCC President Dennis Harkins, requested action against professor Olga Perez Stable Cox for what the letter called "hate speech and bullying tactics."
Cox was seen in the video, apparently made by a student in her class, making statements against the election of Trump and calling his election terrorism.

(LINK TO STORY)

Apparently, it was a violation of the student code of conduct to record the rant, but my question is, should a teacher be able to say such things? Should students be permitted to argue with the teacher about such things? Is it indoctrination, education, or something else.

Russia's influence on the election is a combination of frightening and interesting. I also wonder to what level it played in the outcome of the election. Did they rig the election or just persuade voters? Did anyone take the threat of WWIII seriously?

How will he Trump you with taxes?

A recent calculation of how your taxes might be impacted by the orange haired wonder:

The bigger question is how we won't be able to support all the spending because of the lost revenue. Also, if you think any of that "saved" money at the top is going back into the USA, you haven't been paying attention since Saint Reagan was elected.

That math does not work.

And history already shows trickle-down did not work, so the tax reduction is not going to lead to corresponding economic growth.

Yes facts show this repeatedly, but republicans don't believe in facts, they believe in their opinion.

Plus you know the Hairy Cheeto is smart. He even admitted that when he said he didn't need daily security briefings because he's like smart you know.

My favorite part, the upper 28% bracket. Let's call those doctors and lawyers and such. They get hit, but those are the most likely people (opinion - Republicans love me) to invest back into the economy and create jobs by starting their own company. It's either that or they're our small business owners who really are creating jobs. Not any more!

How much of the government is he going to cut? Based on current spending, this will not work.

I am not a fan of any tax system that includes things like deductions or only a few brackets. If you are going to do brackets, then have several of them. Eliminate the IRS by burning the tax code.

On a side note, how much would it suck to be in that little bracket that is only a few hundred either way. Your taxes are going up 10%.

Is anyone else having troubles accepting the fact that Trump is going to be President? Every time I hear of another appointment I think WTF!

The only good part about this so far is knowing that Hillary is done.

Now I will sit back, make some popcorn, and watch the destruction.

There is the possibility that some if his appointments may not be confirmed. I am kind of wondering how far the GOP is willing to go to appease him. But I mean, they've already gone this far...

It appears we failed and the Oligarchs have won our Republic. Franklin must be in tears.

This chart needs to also show the current Head of Household status, and how Trump is proposing to do away with HOH, leading to an increase in taxes for single-parent families because they will have to file under the Single status. :-@ Yes, give tax breaks to the wealthy folks on the backs of single-parent families.

I was talking to my dad last night and he brought up something...

Can you imagine what it was like in the room that Hillary was in watching the returns come in. Can you fathom the look on her face when she realized that it was over.

Here is a family that has become a political force over the past 4 decades and feared among political elite in and outside of their party... and a reality show host, racist SOB, lunatic with zero political experience just ended her chances of becoming the first woman president in history.

It's a brave new world...or 1984. Too early to tell which at this point.

That, and don't forget considerable assistance from some powerful friends, tovarisch.

Irony is that it happened to her twice.

Won the most votes in 2016 but still lost to an inexperienced political novice with the gift for the gab.

Won the most votes in the 2008 primaries but still lost to an inexperienced political novice with the gift for the gab.

Personally, I have no sympathy. Once Trump was nominated, the election was hers to lose, and she lost it. A better Democratic candidate would have defeated Trump (then again, a better Republican candidate would have defeated Clinton too, so they were perhaps each other's best possible opponent, so the race ended up a draw, one side with the pop vote, the other side with the electoral college).

And so the Federal Reserve announced that rates are going up.

With everything going on and speculation that Trump will cause the economy to implode, I find it surprising that the feds are raising interest rates before DT even takes office, and then announced that there would be further increases down the road.

If the economy is doomed (which I still think might happen regardless of who was elected), why would they make such a move?

There is a list of bills at state that are being introduced that I really don't like. It is almost like they hate municipalities ability to do anything good.

Our legislature has been doing more and more of this due to their "property rights" and "real estate" bias. When the Republicans first dominated, they quickly introduced a numbers of bills over-riding local ordinances. Since they have mandated a few local land use decisions. One example was a rezoning in the middle of the state after the local council denied it. Another is not allowing a town to place design standards on residential development.

At each NCAPA Legislation review, there's more and more bills show that point this direction.

In today's paper, the NC legislature has called a special session whose main topic is to eliminate/reduce the power of the governor (since the Rep. McCrory lost & Dem. Cooper won). UGH!

http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/..._legislative_coup_an_attack_on_democracy.html

Speaking of NC Legislature - I just received this in our state planning listserve and thought someone may want to read dry drivel:

For folks who are interested, there are some zoning and subdivision provisions in this draft bill.

http://www.ncleg.net/Applications/B...ent.aspx?SessionCode=2015E4&DocNum=7&SeqNum=0

Section Headings for the planning-related bits:

REZONING/SIMULTANEOUS COMPREHENSIVE PLAN AMENDMENT 14 SECTION 2.4.(a) G.S. 153A-341

PARENT PARCEL/SUBDIVISION CLARIFICATION 33 SECTION 2.5.(a) G.S. 153A-335

STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS/LAND-USE VIOLATIONS 11 SECTION 2.6.(a) G.S. 1-52

Enjoy!

STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS/LAND-USE VIOLATIONS 11 SECTION 2.6.(a) G.S. 1-52

Enjoy!

These are really pretty goofy amendments too. The Parent Parcel/Subdivision looks to severely limit recorded plat requirements (I'm sure the surveyor's would just LOVE to see that one) and seems to create their own sort of minor subdivision. As a rural county planner, that addition doesn't really bother me, but for more rural areas that could be a huge pain to deal with. The addition of the language about land division by wills/probate is completely unnecessary because of existing case law and their own definition of subdivision (division of land for building or sale purposes...it's not, it's to settle an estate).

The rezoning/comp plan amendment section is just awful planning practice. My favorite busybody responded to that, as I figured he would and in a similar fashion as he always does, and as usual I disagree completely with him. If this issue becomes so commonplace that you need a state law to address it, or it is "common practice", your comp. plan is garbage. Plain and simple. You should not have to regularly amend your comp. plan to fit a rezoning, otherwise there is absolutely no reason to have the plan in the first place.

If the economy is doomed (which I still think might happen regardless of who was elected), why would they make such a move?

So they have room down the road to make rate cuts if there is another recession (or worse). Right now, they have practically no space to work with the rates to help with an economic recovery. Truthfully, they should have started bumping them up more a couple of years ago.

I also think they are doing it as a demonstration of economic confidence to help cool the worries (domestic & international). I think they are hoping it has the effect of "well the Fed isn't worried, so maybe I shouldn't worry so much."

AAAAAAHHHHHHH Everyone in my office listens to Rush Limbaugh and honestly thinks he just tells it like it is.

I have issues with both. The final one is reason 7280 that I do not want to live in California.

And so Trump picks the owner of the Florida Panthers for Army Secretary.

The guy went to west point and served for a little bit, but has been out of the military for so long that I wonder why he would want to job.

City of Charlotte repealed their "Trans Law" today with the assurance that NC Legislature will now repeal HB2 tomorrow. This comes on the heels of Gov. McCrory signing the new GOP Leg bill diminishing new Gov. Cooper's powers.

I am happy that both bills are getting repealed. I am not sure how I feel about the limitation bill though.

On a side note... I present, Hillary supporter from Wisconsin right after the electoral college made it official:

You should not feel good about that.

I like the provision that would take the 1500 exempt employees under the governor's direct control and reduce it to 300. I think that there is too much political cronyism and many of those jobs should be filled with qualified people, not political favors. Just look at the idiots that Trump is appointing. I wish that he did not have the authority to do that either.

I don't like the restructuring of the school authority thought and I fear that the budget cuts to programs will be bad for the state. I also think that the current school system is down right horrible. The County system is too big and teachers are not paid nearly what they should be paid. I think that having it broken into several smaller systems with an oversight might be a better option.

*Just for transparency, did not vote for Cooper or McCroy.

I'll believe it when I see it. According to the NCGA website, there is nothing is on the agenda for today. The next scheduled meeting is December 29th, and it has nothing to do with HB2. The next time the general assembly is scheduled to convene in regular session is January 11th.

When the GOP gained control, they upped this number from 500 to 1500. Now they're reducing it back down & below to 300. Does that help with your perspective?

Yes, I still like it and the GOP should have never raised it up. I could care less if something is sponsored by an R or a D... a good bill is good, and a bad bill is bad.

Under news and information the proclamation calling a special session is there and listed as "NEW" so it sounds like it is in the works.

I guess my point is "what's good for the goose is good for the gander" but I also complained when it was raised by such an absurd amount back in 2010. Shouldn't have been done in the first place, but IF 500 was good then, just put it back.

My favorite thing from the new legislation in NC is that the bills will allow for alternating leadership of the state elections board between a Republican appointee on even numbered years and a Democrat appointee on odd numbered years. Nothing big happens with elections and voting in even numbered years, right? :r:

I think those bills in NC are the worst example of a spiteful, angry, grasping at straws power grab I've ever seen.

My point is the politics of both parties suck and the less 'political' that employees can be, the better it is for everyone. It was stupid when they created it years back and it is stupid that they are only doing it to be spiteful. However I think it is a good move.

It would be like all of us getting appointed by our Town Councils. Every time there is a new election, we would run the risk of the department being cleaned out and new people coming in. How efficient is that?
