What I find interesting about the abortion debate in the US is that it's an all or nothing debate, with no compromise.
Most countries that legalize abortion, including our "progressive" European neighbors, also place restrictions on abortion. You'll find in European countries that abortion is only legal for the first trimester (3-4 months) of the pregnancy. It's illegal after that except in very specific health/safety circumstances.
Yet somehow our laws and the abortion debate refuse to even consider these kinds of compromises. European feminists I've talked to (and I know quite a few) all find the concept of late term abortions horrendous and are against it, yet American feminist women refuse to even contemplate a restriction against late term abortions because of the "principle." Most of them don't even know that late term abortions are banned in most countries including the aforementioned "progressive" European nations. It's very interesting, and the abortion debate has indoctrinated both sides to refuse anything but a winner-take-all attitude with no compromises whatsoever.
I'm well aware that late abortions only represent a small minority of all abortions in the US and the vast majority are within the first few weeks of the pregnancy. Still, banning late term abortion for non health/safety reasons would go a long way to ending the abortion dissent in the US. Both sides get something without too much sacrifice or cost.
