DeSantis appointee to new Disney oversight board suggested tap water could turn people gay

Are you worried about your tap water ?
This is what scares me about Florida tap water. But hey, they are giving out nose clips.

Didn't read the article, but thats about where the last hurricane came onshore. Maybe everything hasn't been 'fixed' yet.

The same strain of brain-eating ameba as what hit Lake of Three Fires last summer in IOWA:

I wonder how many swim in Lake of Three Fires now that it is open. "sure you can swim there, just wear nose plugs and don't stir up sediment or an ameba might eat your brain"
You weren't kidding about the brain-eating ameba!
"Swimmer infected with brain-eating amoeba after visiting an Iowa beach has died, officials say"

President Joe Biden this week called for higher taxes on wealthy Americans to extend Medicare funding as part of his 2024 budget.
. . .
However, the plan is unlikely to pass in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
The plan would increase the net investment income tax to 5%, from 3.8%, for earnings of more than $400,000, including regular income, capital gains and so-called pass-through business income.

The 26 Republican Representatives who refused to denounce white supremacy and white nationalism are (in order of appearance on the statement): James Comer, Jim Jordan, Mike Turner, Paul Gosar, Virginia Foxx, Glenn Grothman, Gary Palmer, Clay Higgins, Pete Sessions, Andy Biggs, Nancy Mace, Jake LaTurner, pat Fallon, Byron Donalds, Kelly Armstrong, Scott Perry, William Timmons, Tim Burchett, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lisa McClain, Lauren Boebert, Russell Fry, Anna Paulina Luna, Chuck Edwards, Nick Langworthy, and Eric Burlison.

Is there more to the story than that. I am guess I am curious if it was tied to a bill or a much broader statement.

It was a statement letter drafted I think by Jamie Raskin that members of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee were asked to sign/support. No tie to any bills or other complicating factor. All the signers had to do was sign and say they were opposed to white supremacy. Here's the statement and some of the signatures (or lack thereof)

19th century "science", such as it was, documented lots of faux support for whitey dominance.

Interesting, I had not heard of that theory and had to look it up. If this is all it is, I don't understand how someone would not be in support of this statement.

I can understand how someone would not support that statement.... if they were in support of white supremacy.

Indeed. It's an old trope: [those people] are coming over on boats by the thousands, taking our jobs and breeding like rabbits. Pretty soon we'll be the minority.

Agreed, but the highlighted part now is actually pretty true (presuming by "we" you meant "white people").

White folks will continue to be a plurality in this country for a long time yet to come. What I find most objectionable about the underlying sentiment of that theory is the unspoken: and then it'll be US that will suffer from all the discrimination and oppression that minorities have historically experienced in this country.

Just because you can make a podcast doesn't mean you should. To whit, when you attempt to thread the political needle, be careful to not overgeneralize, don't mix your metaphors, and please please do use logic. Also, don't act like you know a lot about a lot of things, it just makes you sound like you are on the flimsiest of all soapboxes.

If you are the reading type I highly recommend Isabel Wilkerson's "Caste: The Origins of our Discontents". It is a masterful review of racism in America as viewed through the lens of caste. Although we typically think of caste as it applies to India, the very same thing exists in America. Wilkerson compares and contrasts American racism with the Indian caste system and Nazi Germany. She's an extraordinarily gifted writer and meticulous researcher which is rare to find together in one writer.

The book definitely elicits a range of emotions and I truly think it should be required reading for every college student in the country.

I just finish this book and it was illuminating and provided the additional language/lens I needed to further solidify my knowledge on this subject.

Relatedly, for great insights into the origin and current state of white nationalism in the United States, I recommend "The Storm is Here" by Luke Mogelson. Awesome stuff!
Mogelson is an almost crazy war correspondent. He posted from Ukraine in New Yorker recently with a group of "soldiers of fortune" that were like the Spanish Civil War's Abe Lincoln brigade. He also is good with short fiction.

The story is that Trump will be arrested on Tuesday. Disappointing thing is how many republicans are coming out to defend him.

& calling from protests. I'm sure those will be peaceful too.

The protest is scheduled for 6pm EDT in lower Manhattan. That's in about 5 minutes.
The NYPD, etc have barricaded the courthouse and certain strategic parts of Lower Manhattan.
I think that they, the secret service, FBI, national guard, et al are prepared for anything:
From a mild-mannered peaceful protest to a January 6th do-over.

Trump may very well be thrilled with finally being the center of attention again.

As Al Franken said last night on Daily Show, tRump said he was going to arrested on Tuesday, which did not happen. I'll never believe anything this man says again.

Nothing strange is happening, the grand jury process is moving along as it’s supposed to. This grand jury will be seated until June so there’s no hurry. It’s better for the DA to be deliberative and try and get things buttoned up as tight as possible.

Trump doesn’t know if he’s going to be charged and arrested or not. But grifters are gonna grift and that’s pretty much been his life’s work. I’m not holding my breath that he’ll actually a) be convicted of a crime or b) serve time. He’s a shitty person and his minions are shitty people too.

Two assault rifles used here. Think those congressmen will still wear their AK47 pins this week?

Reports are saying that the 28 year old woman who killed 3 adults and 3 children was once a student at the private Christian School.

Really makes you wonder why someone would do something so horrible.

Yes. Because they are bloodthirsty and relish in mayhem and death.

Do you really have to ask?

OMG MGT!!!

As reported: Greene blamed gun free school zone laws that passed in the 1990s when Biden served in the Senate, in particular, for Monday's shooting.

“Joe Biden’s gun free school zones have endangered children at schools leaving them as innocent targets of sick horrible disturbed people ever since he worked as a Senator to pass this foolish law,” Greene tweeted.

“What a fool. What a failure.”

Greene blamed gun control advocates, who she described as “gun grabbers.”

“Gun grabbers like Joe Biden and Democrats should give up their Secret Service protection and put themselves on the same level as our unprotected innocent precious children at school."

Yes, I do have to ask why. Why are you not asking why?
Well I'm sick of explaining it, but here I go: Certain segments of this population just relish in mayhem, violence, and chaos and just love to kill or more accurately, love it when others do their dirty work for them. There are probably millions of gun-fetishizing MAGAs that are in masturbatory glee right now over this latest incident, especially since 3 children were killed. The piece of $hit that killed these kids seems to fit that profile.

I don't care to know about this human excrement's background, mental illness, yada yada yada. It's pretty calculating to have the wherewithal to plan to take two assault rifles and go through the side door of a school and target 3 children (probably much more if the cops hadn't taken her down). This is no crime of passion. It is first degree mass murder and infanticide, and mass attempted infanticide.

They are are truly rotten to the core, are totally ignorant and unredeemable, and are merciless in their efforts to incite violence. And this is not just a small segment of the population. There are literally 10s of millions of them.

BoBobert brought pictures of fetuses to a hearing on endangered species. So lets derail a hearing on a specific topic with some grandstanding on a far more controversial topic.
Well, aside form the fact that this is uncalled for, I see no difference when politicians from both sides load pet projects into bills that have nothing to do with each other. Same result.

Another shooting. More children dead. I am concerned that the latest information on the Nashville shooting will lead to more violence and hate crimes against transgendered people.

As an American currently living overseas who works with the military community and their families, I find it very interesting that almost all the Americans I work with and speak with do not want to go back to the US. I have families that legit get depressed when they get orders to move back to the US. #1 reason is that they fear for the safety of their children.

Fortunately, we can be sure there aren't tens of millions of them, because if there were we'd be seeing orders of magnitude more of this kind of perversion. No, what we have is tens of millions who are willing to shrug their shoulders at this kind of things and say 'welp, that's the price of the Second Amendment. Ain't nothin' we can do except [fill in with some largely placebo/limited measures like increases in mental health funding or pass legislation requiring locks on gun safes]'.

I'll say it again...there will always be kooks. Every country has kooks. The difference between every other country and the US is they don't have hundreds of millions of firearms in circulation. The ONLY practical solution that will result in meaningful reductions of firearms violence to comparable levels we see elsewhere in the world is to 1) reduce the number of firearms accessible to the public in this country; and 2) regulate them like they are a privilege, not a right.

You are 100% correct. The shooter in Nashville was being treated by a doctor for an undisclosed emotional condition.

This is the EXACT reason we need medical related red flag laws on the books. If it was combined with background checks for the sale of all firearms, then something like that would have prevented this person from legally purchasing any of these weapons.

This is the same message that I have been preaching for a while now. It is practical, rational, and obtainable.

I'll just preach the same message I always do. DO FUCKING SOMETHING!!! I don't care if it's ban all weapons or just putting a limit to some things or maybe adding some red flag laws. Talking about it hasn't changed things. We're at the point that the reporters covering the shooting were involved in a school shooting as a kid. My wife is pressuring our local congressperson to come down to my kids high school and discuss with the kids why shooter drills are important and why there should be no action on fixing the problem.
