Prana and all the others beer lovers - Wish you could be here...

The two of you should check out Terrapin's India Brown Ale at Hickory Hops.

Profile: Terrapin's newest beer, India Brown Ale, was so well-received when it was released this month at the Classic City Brew Fest in Athens and at several other tastings, the company decided to make it a year-round offering. A sort of hybrid of an American brown ale and an India pale ale, it has deep, hazy-brown color. The balance of citrus hops and caramel malt in the nose carries over into the roasty flavor, followed by a rush of bitterness typical of an IPA. This is a brown ale that hopheads can enjoy. And at 6 percent alcohol by volume, they can enjoy more than one.

Sounds great - Terrapin is one of my normal stops...

I forgot to list Sweetwater Brewing (another favorite) is going to be there too.

These are two very good Atlanta based breweries. I haven't had anyhting from the Atlanta Brewing Company. Ms. P has already said I'm not allowed to buy more than one pint glass:r:

Terrapin will hopefully have their monster series. Definitely check them out.. Double IPA, Imperial Stout, Barleywine. The Rye Pale Ale is awesome too.

Oskar Blues is delivering beers to Atlanta that we can't even get here. Check them out for sure! They have a 10-Fiddy Stout that is really nice!

Duck Rabbit...find their porter. You will have to bring a billy club and fight off the uber beer geeks for this one but it's worth a battle scar or two.

I've heard good things about Weeping Radish and Highlands but haven't had any of their beers.

I've heard good things about Weeping Radish and Highlands but haven't had any of their beers.

Weeping Radish follows the German style and my favorite is the Double Bock, Ms. P likes their Corolla Gold (named after a small town on the Outer Banks, not the Toyota).

Highlands is consistently producing very good stuff. St. Teresa's Pale Ale & Gaelic Ale are always available here and are my two favorites. Their Cold Mountain seasonal brew was excellent and hard to find.

Prana, PM me with your address and I'll send you any interesting items I'm able to pick up.

FYI- Hopefully by June, Terrapin will be officially and ATHENS based beer! :-D

Their brewery is really looking good, things are coming right along. I am very excited for them!

Duck Rabbit had a Russian Imperial Stout that was incredible.:p Although i couldn't find it this year. It's a neat brewery its located in the Eastern Part of NC, near East Carolina University.

Missed you this weekend...

Duck Rabbit was excellent. I tried their Russian Imperial Stout, Milk Stout and BarleyWine. All three were had great flavor. You might have missed out on the RIS because they were changing (and running out) of many brews. I almost missed the BarleyWine. I was impressed that they had eight taps flowing, most of anyone.

Besides Duck Rabbit, Pisgah, Foothills, Oskar Blues, Sweetwater, Terrapin and Highlands were others high on my list.

Top of the Hill, Catawba Valley, Big Boss, Depot Street were toward the lower end.

Big Porch Ale?

Has anyone tried “Big Porch Ale” from Bells? From what I understand they brew it for the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, but have also started selling it in selected stores. I bought a 6 yesterday…. Not bad.

Where did you buy it? What style is it?

I had a Stone international IPA last night. It was like drinking heaven. Now that's hops!

Pittsburgh Bound

Going to Pittsburgh in a few weeks. The only thing I know about beer is Pittsburgh in Iron City:-| Does anyone have suggestions of local brews, brewpubs to visit and consume adult beverages:b: :-D

I refuse to allow a fellow Southerner visit the fair 'Burgh and leave only knowing about Iron City. Given the option between it and say Coors Light or Budweiser, sure, I'll pick the local beer. But no thanks otherwise.

Of the local Brew Pubs, Penn Brewery on the North Side is the areas largest, and arguably best micro brewer.

Church Brew Works (located literally across the street from the Iron City brewery) has a decent gold and a pretty good Dunkel, but the main reason to go there is the experience of eating and drinking in an converted church. Try the piroghi pizza if you go.

They can't really serve you there, but if growlers and hops are your thing maybe you can get jmac to take you to East End Brewery. If you can't get in contact with him, I'm sure we can hunt him down at everybodys favorite six pack and hot dog shop.

Two that aren't technically brewpubs but are good beer destinations are Fathead, on the Southside, which has a great selection, but can get very busy. Also there is the much discussed Sharp Edge Beer Emporium, which supposedly has the biggest selection of Belgians in the US. However, the ambiance isn't anything to write home about.

Steel City sounds like a good place to visit for a Hophead. Neat info.

I was worried about my beer supply. I have only a case of Moosehead, 3 Sierra Nevada Pales, 8 Obsidian Stouts, and one Boddington's.

But then I realized that I have three assorted bombers.

Looks like I will have to stock up for this weekend. Sierra Nevada Summerfest is out again as is Odell's Double Pilsner. As much as I hate hot weather, summer beers are some of my favorites!

:b:

MANY MANY Thanks Bicuit!!!

Be sure that I'll be having a few pints at more than one of those places!:-D :-D :-D

That biscuit is quite the resource. I second all of his suggestions. I'd say Sharp Edge is a must-see just for the beer menu, especially that Belgian section. Where will you be staying? One of us can probably suggest a few good places within stumbling distance. ;-)

Dang... called out.

East End Brewing is quite the place, and while you can't buy pints, you can sample what's on tap before you buy. The beer is really good, tends to be hoppy, and is always fresh. It is the one place I make sure to hit weekly.

Do I feel a Pittsburgh mini-laefest coming on? ;-) :b:

Potentially, but the weekend is packed.

My brother and I have a "Go Away" weekend like this every once in a while. Schedule for this is as follows:
June 1 - 3
Friday: drive there
Friday night: Pirates / Dodgers game
Saturday: Golf
Saturday night: Pirates / Dodgers game
Sunday: Golf ... then drive home

He's in charge of the golf and hotel.
I'm in charge of baseball and beer.

Well, I do what I can. Although, I'm sure you're much of a slouch in the beer facilities department division of Cyburbia.

Looks like you're pretty busy. but let us know if y'all have a few free hours.

That's for sure, but there's a outside chance of grabbing beers and bites between golf and baseball on Saturday. I'll touch base with you two before I head up that way.

I bought Fat Weasel, some Minnesota beer, at Trader Joe's this weekend. I love beer, but that was the nastiest crap I've ever bought. I looked it up online on some beer advocate site and saw the negative ratings to make me feel better. Washed it down with a Sierra Nevada to get my taste buds back.

Neighbors thought it was odd that I went on a beer run to the store down the street with my bicycle and a backpack.
18 beers and a bomber of Sierra Nevada made it home safely...

(Would this have to go in the bike thread?)

I think either choice is appropriate. Of course, the beer and bike threads are the only ones I read anyway, so I'm biased. :p :b: [/OT]
Had a good beer weekend. Here's the rundown:
  • Split a growler of Dubbel from Bulfrog Brewery with the neighbors
  • Had a few too many cans of Oskar Blues Old Chub and Sly Fox Pikeland Pils
  • Pint of Bar Harbor Blueberry at D's
  • Split a growler of East End Witte with the neighbors.

Good work, liver.;-)

What a cool surprise!

So, last night I'm going through the office in the house for the first time in a few weeks. I haven't had any time to even get on the computer at home and I'm actually thankful for that!

But...stashed on the shelf next to the computer is a white envelope...I turn it over and it's addressed to me. How freaking long has this been sitting here? Anyway, I open it and it's filled with beer stuff from a the Hickory Hops beerfest! That's awesome!

A very unintentionally late thank you to planit for the collection of beer stuff. After quizzing the wife and daughter, I finally figured out that it came maybe last week...maybe the week before...and my 10 year old daughter brought it in when she came home from school and forgot about it.

Anyway...thank you and it's almost beerfest season here in the mountains, so I will definitely be returning the favor!

prana and zman were seen speeding from the scene in a Toyota pickup yelling "just say no bud miller coors":-D;)

That was all over the traffic reports on the morning news. It was weird.

[ot]Mattoon must have been there or something... how did he know...[/ot]

It was only Coors.

you can't transport beer properly in a rail car! What the hell?!??!

I'm assuming after the Coors wet-vac team sucked up as much of the beer as they could, mixed with the spilled asphalt, they will think they have discovered the new recipe for a Dark lager too.

Here is a DVD for your collection from Here's To Beer

The American Brew
http://herestobeer.com/budshop/Item...r=N15895&effectivedate=3/9/2007&subsegment=CB

HIGHLIGHT:
Grab a pint and a seat as we tell the story of America's favorite drink. From colonial settlers to the struggles of prohibition, through the rise of microbrews and the unending success of national breweries, The American Brew explores the evolution of beer throughout the centuries. Rich tales, interviews with industry experts and an inside look at brewing innovations create a compelling anthem to this national beverage that all beer-lovers will appreciate.

Turns out the neighborhood beer store has several varieties of Founders, so I picked up a six pack of Dry Hopped Pale Ale yesterday.

Sam Adams Black Lager showed up at our local Harris Tetter this week. Nice surprise:) and not bad at all.

In the Northwest, where I went to school so cheap beer was a way of life, Reiner Beer was the cheapest though their commericials were the best.

Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......

That was some swill back in the day ;-)
I grew up in Portland.

On the Reineer commerical note........My favorite was the dude on the motorcycle rounding the bend and the exhaust note was bellowing Reeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr beeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Another great beer from the northwest was Schmidt Deer which came in sport packs that depicted wildlife on them.

In los angels we had Lucky strip in 11 oz bottles which had trivia questions printed on the side and the answers in the cap. What more can you ask for enterainment and your beverage needs tap by one source.

McEwans Scotch Ale is Decent as Is Anchor Steam Christmas Ale.

I have gotten into the IPA's and Bastard Ale is decent.

Larry the Cable Guy gets own beer

PAWNEE CITY, Nebraska (AP) -- A local microbrewery has launched a beer for one of America's most recognizable rednecks: Larry the Cable Guy.

Git-R-Done beer, named for the comedian's famous catchphrase, was launched Saturday by SchillingBridge Winery & MicroBrewery, from the small town where the 44-year-old actor-comedian grew up.

Mike Schilling, who runs the winery with his wife, Sharon, is confident Git-R-Done beer will appeal to the comedian's fan base.

"Rednecks love quality, too," he said.

New Holland Brewery has outdone itself again. If you consider yourself any sort of fermented malt beverage maven you owe it to yourself to try their Lucid Kolsch-style! Not overly hopped, and a wonderfully fresh aftertaste.

I know what Maister would rather be drinking ...

(opens fridge door)

Currently drinking: Orval Trappist Ale, poured in a Great Lakes beer snifter. Quite difficult to describe; it's dry, unique, extremely complex, and you need to take your time with it. It's definitely a "big beer" , despite the color. Wonderful head that sticks to the glass. Highly recommended, but you have to be patient while drinking it.

My fridge is filled with Belgians, so I've got to clear some space. :D

EDIT: Cleveland may not be packed with the same density of brewpubs as Denver and Fort Collins, but there's Great Lakes Brewery, one of the best in the United States. Seriously, it's reassuring to know that great beers like this is brewed here. I always try to buy something I haven't had before when I go to Warehouse Beverage, but I still always get a six of something by Great Lakes in the mix.

I have been drinking Belgian whites as of late in addition to Hefewiezens. I enjoyed Magic Hat Circus Boy.

I am currently out of stock... i had an orphan party on sunday evening and some buddies and i combined our left over and miss-match stock and drink a big variety of beers. It was fun and no body drunk the Natural Lite that my Brother in Law left when he was here last... go figure.

I have been drinking Belgian whites as of late in addition to Hefewiezens.

Two types of beers that I absolutely cannot get into. I've been touring the IPAs recently - finally got a good selection here in Georgia thanks to some of the better microbreweries moving in, combined with some of the larger retailers actually stocking their brews.

I can affirm Dan's description of Orval Trappist. Ahhh, beer memories.

My favorite experience with it was in Ypres, Belgium on a very hot summer day in 1989. We found a little shop off the main square and had Orval's all around. They brought this beer and poured it into a huge snifter -- something I'd never seen before for a beer -- and my Belgian hosts suggested I drink it slowly, rather than quaffing.

After about half a glass I was feeling the effects, and noticed my hosts all had sheet-eating grins on their faces.:-D

The flavor reminds me, peculiarly, of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit.

Things are looking up!!!

Got the first advertisements for the Great American Beer Festival in my email this week. The most wonderful time fo the year is getting closer!

Of course, I will be going, along with most of my drinking buddies from last year. I'm not tasked with planning the day and now, sadly, reserving accomodations for our drunk asses.
Unfortunetly, our friend and organizer, Downtown Denver host (and my best friend) had died last April so we'll be dedicating our day this year to him. :( He'd want us to still be there and drink in his place.

So that's what we'll do. :) :b: This year will be for you, Dave. :)

ANYWAYS, the GABF will be from October 10-14. Perhaps some Cyburbian Hop Heads would like to meet up?

Recent purchases:
12 of Kokanee and bomber of Rogue Chocolate Stout.

It looks like I may be making an extended visit to Albuquerque in October/November. Heck, Denver is sort of on the way there from western PA. Now you have me thinking. :-D

Sorry to hear about your friend, zman. Hoisting a long series of pints at the GABF sounds like a great tribute.

We just conducted our inaugural office beer swap. Pennsylvania law only permits beer to be sold by the six-pack at restaurants and bars, or by the full case at a distributor. Six of us purchased cases of beer we wanted to try or share and assembled our own variety packs. It's going to be a good weekend! :b:

Oh crap!! Are you sure of that date. I know they are overworking you <cough> ;) at the City...are you sure your eyes aren't blurry? Really? The 10th-14th? :-| I think I'm in Phoenix for a wedding that I really don't even care to go to, but my wife and daughter are in the wedding. crap, crap, crap!!! It looks like the string of 6 straight GABFs might be broken. Plus I skipped Fort Collins and Salida this summer already. What the hell is happening to me? :-\

You're right, I was wrong.

It is October 11-13. ;)

Looks like I am drinking for you?
Great, add on more Russian Imperial Stout in addition to my list, and my friend's list. Drinking for three I guess.

Natural Light :b: , hands down at 4.8% of the whole U.S. market, is the BEST BEER :-D (well, 4th most selling that is). :-D :-b

I have upgraded my domestic beer preference to MILLER LITE. Haven’t had Natty for about a year. Any ways here is an update on TOP BEER BRANDS SOLD IN AMERICA for 2005-2006.:-b:b:

1. Bud Light $1.350 Billion 15.4%
2. Budweiser $777 Million 8.8%
3. Miller Lite $712 Million 8.1%
4. Coors Light $606 Million 6.9%
5. Corona Extra $471 Million 5.5%

Coors Light knock Natty to 5th and then Corona Extra took it out of the top 5!
