Headline from the AP Wire:
British Pubs May Stay Open 24 Hours a Day

Article link:
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationw...00647.story?coll=sns-ap-nationworld-headlines

Article Highlights:
"Currently, many British drinkers imbibe as much as they can as quickly as they can before pubs shut at 11 p.m.
Opposition politicians and many newspapers have criticized the new regulations, saying that 24-hour drinking will add to Britain's culture of boozy behavior.
It is ridiculous that the government should deny the entire population the right to a drink after 11 p.m."

Does anyone know if I could get a Grant to study the Economic Development effects of the pubs staying open 24hrs. It would need to be enough to move there a for a few years, not have to work, and have money for "supplies"

"We are not, and never have, promoted 24-hour drinking -- that is a myth," Jowell said.

If allowing the bars to be open for 24 hours is not promoting 24 hours drinking, what is? Bottoms up, I say!

On another note...had some great beer at happy hour last Thursday...

Remains to be seen if anyone takes them up on the 24hr drinking - probably take a while to catch on. I quite like the idea of it - remember going to Portugal where you can drink to whenever you want and it seemed to make it a lot more relaxed.

One of my favourite pursuits (and that of everyone I know) is getting two pints in at "last orders" (normally about 22.45) and then drinking them before being chucked out at 23.10. Its also funny to see everyones drinking speed up rapidly at about tenish as they realise what time it is.... :-D

Most pubs close at 11, city and town centre pubs often have late licences until 12 or sometimes 1am (depending on the size of the city). Clubs will normally have licences until 12, 1, 2 or 3am, again depending on the size of the city, and the local council and police attititude towards entertertainment venues.

In a lot of cities there are loads more bars now with late night licences. Its all part of the grand scheme to create 24 hour cities with a 'cafe culture'. This is normally propagated by City Councillors who have been on a city break to Barcelona/Paris/Rome and believe that people will want to do the same thing on a cold January night in northern England ;-)

While I don't really get out to the clubs much anymore, when I do I am usually ready to stay out until at least 4, but our pubs and clubs here in Wisconsin close at 2 a.m., so I would be in support of extended hours (even in February with windchills in the below zero range!). 24 hours may be a bit much for me personally, though.

I went to the store to buy beer for a upcoming party and bought a 30 pack of PBR and noticed that there is a rebate on the box. I peeled it off and it is mailed to a P.O. Box in "My Fair City". I thought that was kind of weird.

That is not the only beer I bought. I got 2 cases of local micro brews, 12 pack Miller Lite and I have a case of wine.

I hope that is enough booze for 13-15 people :-D

I felt like a toffeenosed Stock-Broker type, (or maybe the dreaded Blue Shirt Planner) and drank two Amstel Lights last night, part of the leftover 12 pack from the ski trip last weekend. They were alright, the Buffalo Wing Pizza I had wasn't... I should've got the vegetarian...

Looking forward to tonight, off out to a cracking Belgian Bar. Loads of nice beers, although some of them are deceptively strong. They have one beer called 'Kwak' which is served in a test tube style glass. You have to give your shoes to the barman as a deposit when you order to make sure you don't steal the glass.

Got a Fullers ESB and 22 oz. Becks dark with my name on it in the fridge.

Headline: Wis. Man Says Beer Choice Cost Him Job
Highlight -
Racine, Wis. -- A man may have found out firsthand just how nasty the competition is between the world's two biggest beermakers.

Isac Aguero, 24, said he was fired from his job with a Miller Brewing distributor, the same day a picture appeared in The Journal Times of Racine of him drinking a Bud Light, which is brewed by Anheuser-Busch Co.

No one is here, I have time to think. I think I will pick up a 6 of 1554 Black Ale from New Begium tonight.... mmmmm.... should go well with boxing on TV.

yuengling question

To my surprise, my uncle happened to have 4 unopened, unchilled, bottles of Yuengling this weekend. I asked how he liked them and he responded, I havn't drank any yet...it looks like river water. I asked him to show me. He gave the bottle a light shake and it revealed a couple of "floaters" in the beer which eventually settled on the bottom. I've seen this before with different unfiltered beers and didn't hesitate to drink them nonetheless.

Pretty damn good beer and tasted very fresh. It was Yuengling Lager. Is it supposed to have little things in it? Either way.. I didn't get sick, go blind or anything else from drinking them.

Sometimes YES... Decanter to enjoy! (it helps strain out the floaties)

Bells Oberon is horrible for floaties. In the bottles, once you finish you can see a white muddy looking stuff on the bottom of the bottle because it is not filtered.

For some odd reason I picked up a 6-pack of Budweiser Select this afternoon on the way home. There's nothing to it. Avoid it. No taste whatsoever. What was their point with this product?

Edit: this beer really sucks, it's getting worse...and I can drink almost anything...well, I do drink anything... :-$

Wow, that's impressively bad. Most bad beer gets more tolerable the more you drink.
:p

Budweiser is a bad beer? Stop the presses! :D Now that's news.... :p

Budweiser fits into my "mineral water with a taste of beer" category. :p

People trying to loose weight should not drink beer. I'm surprised I have to say this.

I think the last one will taste much better.

Don't make me come down to SA and slap you. ;) You have insulted the USA, I demand....oh, I'm not going Rumpy's route....

No, you are right, people trying to loose weight should drink liquor (preferably bourbon) and diet soda!

Hah.. while you're here to slap me I'll buy you a decent beer! And not that Bud-water. :D

Had a new beer over the weekend, a bottle or three of Deuchars IPA. Its Scottish but I didn't hold that against it ;) Absolutely beautiful, one of the best flavoured beers I've had in a while.

And it was cheap in my local bargain store! Jobs a good 'un.

Also a couple of cheeky Belgian beers on Saturday night (Antoon and De Koninck), and then to finish the weekend off a nice pint of Pedigree before watching my team win yesterday afternoon. Kept off the cold quite well. :)

Oh ya.. and stay away from the new Budweiser / Energy Drink combo. On Mrs B's request, I bought a 4-pack WTF? of 10-ounce cans again, WTF? and it is awful. It tastes like someone took a beer and poured it into a can of Red-Bull...50/50. awful. I was hoping that I could drink all 4 really fast and get this weird hyper buzz..

That's what the clerk at the beer store told me. It was terrible. (But I don't buy Bud anyways)

It was quite a dark IPA, kind of amber in colour I guess. Very nice.

Thanks very much :) And I promise to try to never leave Cyburbia; it has a grip on me already....

Seriously sometimes I try to write in more of an 'international' English style, sometimes I write as I speak, and sometimes I ham it up ;)

But cheeky is one of my favourite words....fits the idea of going for a couple of quick beers on the way home perfectly I think.

I'm afraid not...my particular team is Sheffield Wednesday. We are a poor team in what is effectively the English third division. Were quite good in the early 1990s when we were in the same league as Chelsea and Manchester U but since then its been doom and gloom!

Incidentally, I was in Boston last year and went to the 'Niketown' shop. Had a look at the soccer shirts and they had shirts of the USA Womens team, Brazil and Man U. I then took childish pleasure in hiding all the Man U shirts. Don't they have some kind of deal with the Yankees?

Reminds me of the price of a 6-pack of Red Stripe in Belize. It was like $13 bucks... after the conversion.

We just stuck with Belize's Brew, Beliken. They also brewed Lighthouse Lager, which was a nice change of pace, but skunky.

I recently came across a very affordable import lager from Holland, called Bavaria.
It is imported through a company in Dallas.
It reminds me of Amstel.
And I ain't talkin' about any of that Amstel Light swill they serve in the States. I'm dreaming of real Amstel...made from fresh canal water... :-b

I am now curious about regular Amstel. I kind of like Amstel Light, when I have it, but I normally do not buy it.

It is my favorite beer zman.
Amstel has more of a full body and malty flavour than Amstel Light. Which admittedly, is not the aforementioned "swill" but certainly can't compare to Amstel.
I have never seen it sold here in the states.

Stella Artois is a good "light" beer that might be available locally.

I don't get it. If a person were woried about calories why would they drink beer at all? ^o)
