Food / drink 🍗 The 'help me figure out what to have for dinner tonight' thread

Ew. No.

😉
There used to be a place near me that specialized in it in Chicago, it was called Cinners, didn't last, current place has philly style cheese steaks which seem to be much more popular. Never tried the chili there or when I was in Cincinnati or anywhere else. I think you can get Skyline Chili in a can at the supermarket.

You can, but I won't buy it. I will buy it if I see it in the freezer case.

I pulled out the crockpot and we had pork with broccoli and sauce for dinner tonight, served over pasta.

Lots of leftovers. Usually will eat those with rice.

I bought a can of Skyline at the grocery store recently ($$$$) and I thought it tasted just like what you get in the restaurants. Granted, it's up to you to add your own noodles, cheese, beans, and onions if you want it five-way.

At $4.50 a can, I decided it's worth my while to create our own Cincinnati chili. I just need a recipe. But wherever could I find a thing like that?...

Chili from a can scares me. I haven't seen Skyline in a freezer case for a while.
I wager if you took a blind taste test between canned and store Skyline, you couldn't tell the difference. I could detect no difference with either the taste or texture.

I already figured out I'm making chana dal for dinner. I've got plenty of tomatoes that we canned from the garden, pitas we froze last time we bought them, and several cans of garbanzo beans.

Doesn't the stuff in the store come from a (albeit larger) can anyway?

So if you're afraid of chili from a can I have a great suggestion for you...make your own Skyline chili! I did it last night following this recipe . It tasted just like Skyline. I'm sure I couldn't tell the difference with a blind taste test. So just prepare your spaghetti noodles, get your cheddar cheese, red beans, and chop up your onions. These are all ingredients you most likely already have in your pantry and spice rack.

Thanks! I've made it from scratch and loved it.

You can. All you have to do is remove the ground beef. This type of chili is soupy by nature and since you're already serving it over noodles, it really doesn't impact much.

But...isn't the fat rendered from the meat a vital part of any chili sauce?

Otherwise, you'd likely just have tomato soup.

My mom always put spaghetti in chili. She didn't make Cincinnati chili, but always used a spice packet. Chili-O was her favorite. She also liked Bloemer's chili base and/or spices, but couldn't buy if after we moved from KY.

We had chili every Saturday. I didnt like it, but had to eat it anyway. So I don't really like chili. Then I found out that her mother made chili every Saturday, and my mom's friends would come for dinner before they went out, because my grandmother's chili was the best. She used Bloemer's, too.

I feel like I cheated myself of a sweet family tradition by not liking chili or enjoying it every Saturday.

Last night was chicken breasts cooked in olive oil and basmalic glaze, with 3-color pasta and fresh salad.

Lunch today will be leftovers from last night.

Tonight will be bacon-wrapped sirloin "bites" cooked on the stove, and salad. What should I do as a side?

-mac & cheese
-mashed potatoes (had night before last)
-pasta (had last night)
-rice

Potato cakes using leftovers.

How about tabouleh or cous cous? Most are just add water and oil, though you can add more stuff if you wish...

See? sometimes things don't require long periods of agonizing decision making.

No worries, I have a 15 yo girl who doesn't like pizza. It's just weird.
I mean...I can understand a teenage girl, but when I was 14 I could have lived happily with pizza for every meal.

I understand there are multiple treatment options available to help deal with this condition (e.g. electroshock therapy, Thorazine, brain surgery, etc.)

I consider having a BLT with avacado a nice treat.

Which toasted bread would taste better - wheat or sourdough ?

We're making sourdough bread this weekend. This is the part where I put in a shameless plug for Red Star Platinum baking yeast. It's not regular Red Star active dry yeast, as it has same dough conditioners in it that professional bakers use. It's a bit more expensive, but the finished product makes it well worth it.

Pork carnitas, yellow rice, and black beans for dinner tonight. Might see if the fruit stand has some ripe plantains.

We'll be picking up fish and chips from a bar nearby. They only make it on Fridays and it's really good. As I type this, I realize it's the first Friday of lent so I better call my order in a little early.

Ooo...that sounds good.

Probably just hummus and pita, if I have anything at all. We took a friend out for a Dim Sum lunch for his birthday and I am very very full.

Back in the day, we loved going to Friday Fish Fry during Lent in our town of Green Bay. Copious mugs of cold beer, good friends, fresh out of the Bay Yellow Perch (caught through the ice), hot fries, crunchy cole slaw, finished off with pie a la mode.

All the while somberly reflecting on our sins and the need for penance yadda yadda yadda . . .

Evening meeting today, so got some spicy California roll sushi from the local high end grocery store and a nice wedge of Shropshire Blue to go with my desk pretzels for 'dessert'.

I did indulge with a can of Mtn Dew Code Red.

Tonight has been decreed to be 'breakfast for dinner night.' That usually means making pancakes or waffles. I will still likely make those, but what else should I make to go with them?

  • hard fried eggs
  • bacon
  • schnitzel
  • roasted potatoes
  • cottage cheese
You need savory and proteins to offset the sweet sugary 'bread' and liquid sugar.

I have some weisswurst in the freezer. Also potatoes need some sort of representation. I'm thinking maybe o'brien potatoes.

Fried chicken or nuggets with honey and hot sauce. Or sausage and bacon.

To be clear, we don't roast them unseasoned. We usually use a simple butter/salt/pepper/onion powder/garlic powder coating on baby golds or fingerlings.

12 oz packs of tuna steaks thaw in half hour. Pat dry and blacken. Pan fry 6 min max. Rice and anything green.
