RTDNTOTO 🐻 Random Thoughts Deserving No Thread Of Their Own 20 (2025)

Went to go see the ventriloquist Terry Fator over the weekend. Show was good, but I think he's overhyped. I'd say see if it you get a chance, but don't stress it if you don't.

But...isn't it always 'Saturday' for you?

;)
I was going to say the same.
The only difference the day of the week makes to a retiree is perhaps found in retail hours of operation. Some businesses aren't open on Sunday and if they are then for more limited hours.

My much-hated Monday morning meeting starts in 36 minutes. Somehow, I've got to keep it from happening...but how? Bomb threats and pulling the fire alarm are sooooooooo "I'm in my 30s and hate my government job", I'm a man now (save your comments, I heard it as soon as I typed it) and I want to stop this meeting in a better way, but have no ideas. Somebody stop it for me!!!
Be seen walking fast out of your building looking down at your phone and tsk-tsk-ing. Come back after lunch.

See not every day is Saturday
Saturday - bank is only open till noon, library branches open till 5, CVS pharmancy only open till 6pm, recycling center is closed
Sunday - bank is closed, recycling center is closed, CVS pharmancy only open till 6pm, only Central branch of library is open 1 to 5

So by this theory, Monday's should be great for you since everything is open!!

But do you really need a bank branch nowadays? I don't think I've seen the inside of any of my credit union's branches in years.

Except barbers, who, by custom, are closed Sunday and Monday. :)

The problem my wife and I have is that since we have Tuesdays off together, it can be hard to find recreational stuff to do since a lot of it is closed or doesn't open until late afternoon that day. Apparently not too many people like to go mini-golfing at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday.

In my fair community 2 mini golf places not only went out of business but are completely razed and are still vacant lots.

The only way retired people know it's the weekend, there are no doctors appointments.
Unless you schedule an appointement at a Urgent Care (my hospital's urgent cares do make/take appointments)

So does our urgent care; I get there about once or twice a year for minor things.

Oddly, our ER takes appointments too!!! Can't even count how many things are wrong with that.

"Yeah, hi, I am planning on splicing my finger open next Wednesday about 8 p.m."

Juist left the local post office. There were 10 people in line for passport applications.
Our post office only takes passport applications at random times, like Tuesdays 9 to 12 or something like that.

I just mailed my renewal in last week and didn't have to do anything with the post office except drop it in the slot.

We don't have any international travel planned until about October of 2026, but it never hurts to be prepared--both my passports expire in May this year. (Bad planning on my part.)

I made a joke a couple of weeks ago about a store someone wanted approved. When I asked them what they sold, the guy responded in almost a sing-song voice "that they sold everything!" I responded "Animal, vegetable, and mineral" and there was a long pause with no laughter.
Love it.

It's a pop culture reference so old/obscure that no one gets it except people that are 150+ years old, musical theater nerds and/or The Simpsons devotees.

I'm wondering if I should have named my book about my brain surgery "Locked for Editing" instead of "Technical Difficulties."

Not that it matters a whole lot, but I realized the latter is kind of a boring name. But then, I was just beginning to regain my writing skills when I wrote it.

Does anybody feel - kinda off? I mean, I just don't feel right in my shoes. It's like mentally, the whole world feels on a slant to me somehow these days. Gawd. I hate February. I always have. Hate it.

I feel ya. I can't remember a February starting out like this one has.

You must love February! It's Arizona's statehood month. Also on the same day, some romantic greeting card generated holiday. Plus there's some football game to watch and I consider this month like it's starting to pull away from winter.

I hate recording stuff with our county. They can't do maps well unless it's super simple and no hatching or faded lines or anything. You would think someone would invent some kind of color scanning thing that can record exactly what the document looks like or maybe even a way to record the document electronically so there is no loss of fidelity by trying to print and scan things.

Don't try to save February just because it's a beautiful month where you live; it's cursed. Cursed, I say! The ONLY redeeming quality it has had for me is the aforementioned football game - which is, some years, the ONLY football game I actually make the time to watch. I freaking love the NFL. I collected those little helmets when I was a kid in the 70s-80s, anybody remember those? Yeah. And most years, now even the Superbowl is ruined for me because my teams are never in it. Don't even get me started on all the horrible Valentine's Days I've endured and/or caused. Are you trying to make me hate February MORE?!?!!? Mission accomplished. Give me more to whine about!

Love you. Hate february. :)

I'm the latter. Like many things, my first experience with the song was on The Simpsons with Sideshow Bob. As bad as the show has gotten, there were so many things I learned from The Simpsons and other cartoons/sitcoms. My first exposure and basic understanding of the Iliad and Odyssey come from them. There are so many classic stories that I never read, but know the basics because of a spoof.

Its a step up from January, and at least the days are getting longer, and theoretically warmer.

Apparently the Simpsons actually became a good show again (or had a period of being good). I lost interest after their movie came out, but I enjoy making older references.

I lament the end of the print edition of The (Newark) Star-Ledger, New Jersey's paper of record. We had home delivery of the Star-Ledger, New York Daily News and Plainfield Courier-News all through my formative years (the latter was an afternoon paper and the former were morning papers). I learned that the Star-Ledger was for real news and great sports writing; the Daily News was for tabloid entertainment and pretty good sports-writing (at least in the 70s-80s time period), and the Courier was to find out who locally (e.g., we might know) had died, as well as other gossipy info.

I too grew up reading the Star Ledger.

Tuesday is the easiest best day to grocery shop. Sunday the only store in town is closed (Fareway). Monday is busy due to being closed the day before. Generally don't shop for anything on the weekend or whatever they call those two days.

Who knows many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.
Once upon a time, there were three kingdoms, all bordering on the same lake. For centuries, these kingdoms had fought over an island in the middle of that lake. One day, they decided to have it out, once and for all.

The first kingdom was quite rich, and sent an army of 25 knights, each with three squires. The night before the battle, the knights jousted and cavorted as their squires polished armor, cooked food, and sharpened weapons. The second kingdom was not so wealthy, and sent only 10 knights, each with 2 squires. The night before the battle, the knights cavorted and sharpened their weapons as the squires polished armor and prepared dinner. The third kingdom was very poor, and only sent one elderly knight with his sole squire. The night before the battle, the knight sharpened his weapon, while the squire, using a looped rope, slung a pot high over the fire to cook while he prepared the knight's armor.

The next day, the battle began. All the knights of the first two kingdoms had cavorted a bit too much (one should never cavort while sharpening weapons and jousting) and could not fight. The squire of the third kingdom could not rouse the elderly knight in time for combat. So, in the absence of the knights, the squires fought.

The battle raged well into the late hours, but when the dust finally settled, a solitary figure limped from the carnage. The lone squire from the third kingdom dragged himself away, beaten, bloodied, but victorious.

And it just goes to prove, the squire of the high pot and noose is equal to the sum of the squires of the other two sides.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a grocery store being closed Sundays.

Yep. Wife and I are both off Tuesdays so that’s our shopping/errand/fun day.

Today we honor the memory of the Four Chaplains: Alexander Goode (Jewish), Clark Poling (Baptist), George Fox (Methodist), and John Washington (Catholic).

On this day in 1943, the USAT Dorchester was torpedoed, and these courageous men, facing certain death, helped calm the passengers and crew, organize an evacuation, and distribute life jackets. When the life jackets ran out, they gave up their own to others and linked arms in prayer, a testament to their unwavering faith and selfless service. They were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart.
