I purchased a tailor-made completely white three piece suit, including a pair of white loafers, when I was in Okinawa. I guess I was picturing myself wearing it while holding a daiquiri in my hand like Mr. Rourke on Fantasy Island ("Smiles everyone. Smiles") but ended up never wearing it a single time when I was in the service and got too fat to wear it after I got out of the service. What an utter waste of money.
I know you're a Marine but I instantly had this image pop into my head thinking about you picking up women in Okinawa :D

Wondering if I should bother applying to get the $57 I apparently have in unclaimed property waiting for me from a long-forgotten-and-closed bank account in another state.

Really not worth the hassle, but it could buy an OIive Garden meal. Or a tank of gas.

Jim

The boss just dumped another briefing paper and powerpoint on me. See what happens when you distract me with why I don't have a tape dispenser or stapler on my desk.

It's yours. Claim it.

Flashback Friday.

Hey, I didn't finish last!

November 7, 2000 election.

(Bill has passed on. Roberta is now in the California State Assembly. Jim Umbach is now working in Reno. I don't know where the other James and Michael are, but I am sure they are happy in whatever they are up to.)

@WSU MUP Student
I KNEW you would not disappoint! And my brother, the SOCKS, man! The SOCKS! You make me wanna be a better dresser.
My first boss in the public sector always warned me to never drive an expensive car, especially foreign, and never wear expensive suits. This was never a problem for me because, I'm still paid like a lowly government employee.

I think if I stay in the field till 60, I'll be the old guy up on the 4th floor of some building that no one wants to go to see. I can imagine devolving back into wearing generic pleated pants and a wrinkled button up shirt with the logo from the city that hasn't been used in 20 years.

I aspire to be this old man, but working from home in a ratty t-shirt and shorts.

Thanks for distracting me everyone. Now I have to finish edits on the briefing sheet on my day off. Where's my damn tape at anyway?

I enjoy my fancy clothing and worked part time for a while at a higher end department store selling dress shirts and neckties. Thanks to the employee discounts and freebies from vendors, by the time I quit I had a pretty nice wardrobe... But I was going into my first full-job as a social worker so I had to scale it back considerably. I still wear a lot of nice clothing but (besides maybe some loud patterns on a pair of socks), most of my stuff is rather subtle. If I had to pick a particular aesthetic that most of my wardrobe fits into it would probably be rather "trad" in the Take Ivy sense of the word.

I know I spend a lot on clothing, but instead of flashy well known designer names, I try to focus on quality materials, unique textures, and items made in particular countries (USA, Japan, UK, France, Belgium) that have a lot of unionized labor or at least pay a living wage.... though lately I did find that I can buy t-shirts with vintage graphics for basically any band on eBay super cheap so I have to imagine the BÖC shirt I'm wearing to WFH this afternoon was probably screen printed by somebody making 8¢ in some deplorable warehouse.

I wore a tie for about a week when I started this job, then switched to the T-shirt and jeans motif everyone else wears. I only dress up (to slacks and button-down shirt) on PC and city council days.

So that means you don't shop at Kohls.

We had several hosiery mills in the region for a long time. When they were open they would hold a 'parking lot sale' and have boxes & boxes of socks - GoldToe was one brand - and there would be fancy dress socks all the way to work socks. They would sell for 50 cents to $2.00 a pair & I bought many. We still have a few manufacturers and one has an outlet store which they still sell pairs from $1.00 to $3.00, but they're primarily athletic socks.

After I first got out of the Marines and was working at the department store I used to drive back to NC quite a bit to visit friends who were still in there. Just before one of my trips I learned there was an actual factory store for Brooks Brothers... not like an outlet mall store, but a store where they would take mainline stuff (overages, samples, test-runs, etc.) from the factory across town and sell them to the general public. They always had tons of hosiery but they also had the OCBD shirts that were still made in Garland, NC at the time and they'd have chinos and plain navy blue blazers and a few other staples. I used to love stopping in there as the stuff was usually about 80% cheaper than going to the actual Brooks Brothers. However, they had funky hours and would often be closed for days on end and sometimes, even if they were open, you'd go in and all they had were socks and two shirts with a size 19 neck or something so the detour on my way to Jacksonville could be a bust.

It's Christmas at Costco as of this weekend- not surprising- but did I miss buying bulbs to put in this fall already?

^^^a very skittish stray has been on our front porch over the last couple months, but always runs off when the door opens or it sees us. I tell it to chill out, but has always stayed about 20 feet away. This weekend I actually got him to come over to me, it rubbed against my finger & then scampered away. I'm going to keep trying to be nice.

Our oldest is now a freshman in high school. Most days in middle school I'd drive her to school since it would allow her to sleep in an extra 20 minutes. I sort of liked driving her to school because we could stop downtown for pastries on the way to her school or on the way back home I would stop downtown and go for a nice long walk. Her high school is about 2 blocks from our house so she walks and I'm really missing out on my daily pastry!

My oldest just moved out. She no longer wants to associate with anyone because she knows how to do it all without our help. The youngest in now learning to drive. It's going to feel weird in a couple years when the youngest leaves.

Don't worry, by then the older one will be back.

And has no idea who BÖC happens to be.

At first I would have said Red Panda, but after thinking about it a few seconds should a Bear be our official mascot?
Here he is on a random RJ'ed Friday afternoon
