The guilt has been building up for decades. No longer can I keep it inside, but after carrying this secret for so long, I've at long last got to unburden myself......

Dear 4th grade teacher,
You know that science project in 1973 where I made a diorama of the human digestive tract using various types of macaroni and pasta? well.....

MY MOTHER HELPED ME WITH IT!!! In fact, I'd say she did most of the work! I've been living a lie ever since. There's no question I never would have gotten to where I am in life today but for the A grade I got on this one important assignment.
Season 8 Tns GIF by THE NEXT STEP
I got in trouble in 4th grade because my mother, also an elementary school teacher, was not willing to help me with a project so they told me to take apart my brothers project on electricity and put it back together. I had the same teacher as my brother did 4 years earlier and she remembered the project. My mother and the teacher had a phone call. I got a B and the world kept moving.

I lost my insulated plastic water bottle on a bike ride Saturday morning so I bought a new one yesterday. Now I have an insulated stainless steel bottle. Seems to function just the same but I took it into the steam room after my workout this morning and was surprised at how quickly the bottle gets super hot to the touch. Thankfully the water seemed to stay nice and cold.

I wish I knew where to find a couple square feet of 1960s era floor tile - 3" hexagonal white with gold or brown or tan specks. Otherwise it looks like I'll have to replace the whole damn thing since the vanity won't hide the missing tiles and I won't do linoleum (the previous owner did and it was horrid).

Alternate response:

Yes, every time my 8 year old starts telling me in excruciating detail about the happenings on her Animal Crossing island.
Honestly, though, I get hyper focused on my games, too, and take them very seriously. Wifey knows that's my personal time and I can't be interrupted for anything short of a house fire. I usually play transport "move things from here to there" type games like World of Subways, Cities in Motion, American Truck Simulator, and Flight Simulator, with the occasional sports game like FIFA thrown in.

My thinking is that since we own stock in Electronic Arts, I should use the company's products occasionally.

What is happening in Terre Haute ?
A rock concert? If not now, then surely there has been in the past. And what did the lead singer shout to the crowd as the band took to the stage?

Oh dear it's July 29th and 11:00 a.m. is coming fast upon us. Time for some acid rock!

Another Summer Classic - Summer in the City

Here's a good piece of music trivia: Summer in the City is the only song with "Summer" in the title to hit #1 on the Hot 100 in the summer.

Percy Faith's Theme from a Summer Place hit #1 in the late winter/early spring of 1960:

Cruel Summer from Taylor Swift hit #1 (a couple times) in the fall of 2023:

My personal favorite "Summer" song would be Summertime. It only hit #4 on the Hot 100 in the summer of 1991 but it did reach #1 on both the "Hot Rap Songs" and the "Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs" charts from Billboard. I think I must have watched this video 200 times that summer.

Summertime sampled heavily from Kool and the Gang's very funky Summer Madness which only reached #35 on the Hot 100, and it did that in early 1975, so definitely not a summer hit. Summer Madness is one of my go-to songs to let Spotify build a playlist from while I lay in the hammock. Love it!

It's raining and rain is expected to continue from 9 am till 1 pm. I have a meeting scheduled at 11 am on site at an active construction project. So now we play meeting cancellation chicken. Who will be the first to suggest cancellation?
  • The City Planner with the muck boots in his personal vehicle and a new department issued rain jacket
  • The grizzled grading superintendent who suggested that we meet today because it was raining last Thursday.
  • The City's construction project coordinator who likes to track mud into office buildings.
  • The City's Public Utility Director who doesn't really want to be anywhere.
  • The Developer's engineer that knows everything.
  • The developer's project manager that doesn't want to stop progress of the project for anything.
Edit... Before I could finish posting this; the meeting location has been moved to a indoor location, but any guesses as to who suggested the change?
The grizzled grading superintendent was the one that asked that the meeting be moved indoors. Everyone present complained about the temperature in the meeting room except the planner who was wearing a rain jacket.

That's a hard one. We had to have some plumbing work done in our shower but I didn't want to do the whole bathroom. Couldn't find matching tile so we went with complementary colored tile. Not great but it's functional.

Did you know when construction/repair work cuts into a residential gas service line the utility shuts of the electricity in the area.
Police blocked the streets, and a Fire Dept Engine was near a hydrant.

My electricity was out for about an hour.

You don't want to mess with free-range electricity. Good thing they cut it off.

My mom's neighbor went out to investigate why her power cut out. A splice failed and live line was on the ground. She burned and died where she fell. Tragic.

I really hate it when people trying to sell me something, like software or whatever, and they bump their email, or try to force you into a zoom meeting with them, or ask why you haven't gotten back to them, or the worst, they contact the councilor email list and ask them why staff hasn't answered them #innerrage

^^^So Mr. Insurance Guy - Remember the tree I told you about that was dying, leaning towards the house and it needed to come down?...Yes the one you said my homeowners policy from your insurance company wouldn't cover the removal. Well I hired BigRig Tree Services to remove it, even if you wouldn't pay for removal. Well, now there's an issue.

Going to Farmer's Markets makes me tense. I always want to buy some of everybody's stuff so that they don't feel like I wasn't impressed by their crafts or cucumbers. Also, the two kids singing last night got a big tip from me just for song selection. When you come in singing obscure deep cuts from Toad The Wet Sprocket and you're like 16, you're getting my money.

Imagine the softly wafting tones to the gentle guitar and mandolin version they were doing: "before you were born, someone kicked in the door..."

Would've been a real bonus if either of them could sing worth a damn, but I gave $10 anyway. :)

Absolutely. I also hate getting continued emails when I know they had suckered someone else from the team into a meeting.

Today is the 79th anniversary of the sinking of USS Indianapolis. My grandfather was in the first class (a senior) when Charles B. McVay, III, was in the third class (a sophomore) at the United states Naval Academy. McVay, III, was in command of Indianapolis when she was sunk by Japanese torpedoes and would be the only US Naval officer court martialed for losing his ship in combat during WWII. He was posthumously exonerated in 2000.

The USS Indianapolis story was in the movie Jaws.

I took myself to the movies last night to see Deadpool & Wolverine.

  • Movie ticket: $13.50 $6.50 Tuesday rewards special $1.50 after using additional $5.00 rewards credit I had (had I gone to a showtime before 6:30 p.m. it would have been free!)
  • Popcorn: $6.00 $0.00 Free on Tuesdays for rewards members! Woohoo!
  • Snocaps: $4.00 $1.00 because I bought a whole bunch of boxes of movie-sized Snocaps and M&Ms at the store a few months back
  • Pop: $3.50
  • Total: $27.00 $6.50

I didn't even have to pay for gas or parking! since I got my wife to drop me off in town while passing through to pick up our youngest from her aunt's house and then I walked the mile and a half home at 11:00 p.m. after the movie was done. This was my first time walking home from town that late at night in a long time and I forgot how much I like going for a walk at that time of day.

All in all, it was a nice, inexpensive outing. I considered buying a can of Coke at the drug store near the theatre and sneaking that in with me to make it even cheaper but I don't drink much pop and when I do I really like the stuff from the fountain and the tactile feel of the wax-coated paper cup.

When I went Monday there were 5 of us.

Movie tickets: $44.00 - would've been $55.00 but I had a free ticket to use.
Snacks: $48.25 - 3 popcorns, 2 sodas, 1 Icee and 1 water
Total: $92.25

I think you won lol
