Does anyone have any chocolate - I ate all my conference swag chocolate from last week
My supervisor came into my office today and said, "oh wow! You're wearing lipstick today!"

I immediately turned bright red, as I never wear lipstick, and realized it was chocolate from the chocolate fairlife I just drank. Then I had to admit it was chocolate and not lipstick. 🐷🐷

Sorry. All I've got is a 32 oz diet dew and half a bag of butter rum life savers. Have you scrounged around the business license desk? Sometimes I find chocolate there.....

We had a combined 8th grade and high school concert band concert last night. My daughter is in 8th grade and plays clarinet in the regular band and clarinet and keyboards in jazz band. She also surprised us last night and played alto sax during one particular song in the regular band - she only began playing that back in December when they started working on a piece that needed an alto sax but the band didn't have one so she decided to give it a try. She also had a clarinet solo in another song. She always amazes me with her musical ability.

Two other notes from the concert:
  • The 8th grade has a kid who plays guitar and sax in the jazz band and sax in the regular band and he's phenomenal. Yesterday he had a sax solo during one of the jazz band pieces and he was able to improvise for a few bars and it turned into Careless Whisper.
  • I'm officially old because some of the haircuts on these kids really irk me!

Wow three recent posts about being old. What other measures of being old are there besides those mentioned above?

My oldest played flute in band and my youngest is in choir and does musicals/plays. As someone with ZERO musical or performance talent, I am constantly amazed at what these kids can do.

Also, yes on the haircuts, especially the boys lol

My oldest has never had an interest in choir but she does love drama. She is in an after-school drama club and in the fall they did an improve performance (she's done improv with the club a few times and went to an improv drama camp last summer) and now they're working on a version of Hamlet for a performance in a few weeks. She's also doing to school spring musical. In 6th grade she did tech crew and enjoyed it but decided that she wanted to be in the actual musical, so last year she was in the ensemble for Descendants and this year she's got a role in Annie Jr. She didn't get the part she really wanted but she took it in stride and is looking forward to the performance in May. There is a local theatre group here in town that always does a children's performance in the summer. Last year a couple of her friends were in it in Matilda so she wants to join it this summer if her schedule permits.

Little known Maister trivia. During my senior year, I was asked by the organizers of the high school talent show to do stand up comedy between acts to give stage crews time set up for the next act. I wasn't even an 'entry' in the talent show, yet somehow based on student votes managed to get third place in the show.

Give us your best joke from that set.

This bothers me a bit. The guy my stepdaughter dated mostly through high school had some of the worst haircuts I've ever seen. Then I take a breath, sit back, and think that no one is is rocking an unironic mullet, there are no rattails, and no one has plaster Vanilla Ice hair so this too will pass.

Dandy, this was like 42 years ago.

Okay, I remember doing an imitation of Pac Man. Something to do with ways students were misspending their lunch money.

It is funny because it is true! Students are always misspending their money!

Yep, the girl's boyfriend has horrible hair, but I make fun of him for being in jazz band. I mean, they couldn't find something cool in school like old school rock cover band? Now I found out he sings in the acapella choir. He's not all bad though, he is a huge star wars nerd which my daughter hates.

This is day two of me trying not to have caffeine (diet Mt. Dew) till lunch. It's not going well. Yesterday hair grew spontaneously from my right cheek but disappeared later. It mocked me. My need mocks me.

I can feel the walls closing in. This is the end. The doom of all ages is upon me. I'm not the boss, so I can't just leave when I want, and I can't find a pretense for a site visit. What am I supposed to do, go upstairs to the vending machine and pay 2 bucks for a can of pop like an animal? I won't do it. I won't.

I'll just let the darkness take me.
Bless you. I've already had one this morning. I need to quit but I'm in the wrong line of work for that.

I probably need a box like this to kill my habit.

Speaking of children's theatre. A few weeks ago the local American theatre put on a children's play of Schoolhouse Rock Jr. The kids did a great job but it was interesting to see that they included some songs that seem a bit problematic for the current social climate.
Such as:
and

Hubby and I were tempted to write some updated songs to include in the show that tell the perspective of Indigenous People and people of color.

@Maister , help me write the songs of the people! Let's use our privilege to ruin the memories of Schoolhouse Rock by adding some much needed political correctness.

I haven't seen "Elbow Room" since when it was actively airing on Saturday Morning (maybe 1976). Those America Rocks 'educational' cartoons had some horrific propaganda in them.

Liebensraum indeed!

There needs to be a chipper little Schoolhouse Rock tune about Slavery as well as the Trail of Tears, don't you think?

Day three, no caffeine till lunch. What do we say to the god of death?

I'll take German geographers for 400, Alex. My god but I adore you, sir.

Just picture a 5 gallon vat of heavy duty Great Value mayonnaise
Key phrase "heavy duty". I have seen that used on mayo from my grocery store deli days. I have always wondered about the specifications on that.

Definitely! I can picture it now!

And one about how Corporations are People too!
I just asked chatgpt to give me a song about rezoning request in the style of school house rock. It is as follows:

(Verse 1)
Well, gather 'round, kids, it's time to learn,
About a process that may make your city turn.
It's called rezoning, not as dull as it sounds,
A musical journey through planning grounds.
(Chorus)
Rezoning request, oh, it's quite a quest,
Changing zones around, it's a city's bequest.
Zoning laws are like a puzzle, you see,
Let's sing along, join the rezoning spree!
(Verse 2)
First, there's residential, where homes stand tall,
With yards and gardens, and families enthralled.
But when the city grows, and the needs evolve,
It's time to consider how we can resolve.
(Pre-Chorus)
Zones like commercial, mixed-use, and more,
Deciding the future, we explore.
(Chorus)
Rezoning request, a dance with the zones,
Balancing progress with neighborhood tones.
It's a city's heartbeat, a rhythm so grand,
Let's sing together, across the land!
(Bridge)
Public hearings, meetings, voices unite,
Concerns and visions, in the planning light.
The city council, with decisions to make,
A careful balance, for the community's sake.
(Verse 3)
So, they study the maps, they listen and learn,
Considering traffic, schools, and every concern.
The goal is a city that thrives and grows,
A place for everyone, where opportunity flows.
(Pre-Chorus)
Zones like industrial, green spaces too,
A tapestry woven for me and you.
(Chorus)
Rezoning request, a symphony of change,
Adapting the city, not acting strange.
A chorus of voices, decisions so wise,
Together we build, reaching for the skies!
(Outro)
So here's the tale of rezoning request,
A story of cities, always on a quest.
With planning and purpose, we pave the way,
For a community that flourishes, day by day.

As a planner, I noticed the fundamental design flaw of the new Las Vegas baseball stadium immediately . . .

Does anyone else notice it?

It's missing about 200 acres of parking

Gonna be a lot of foul balls and errant throws knocking out teeth behind home plate. Might want to invest in cosmetic dentistry practices in Vegas.

Yes, there should be SOME parking, but there are lots of other ways to get there other than a car, plus all the casinos nearby have garages.

That's not it . . . but it's a good observation.

MLB requires a certain amount of netting. It's just a rendering.
I'm referring to the fact that the home plate is set up so that the batter is facing west. Ballparks are designed so the batter is facing east/northeast (or nearly so).
