Sporadic/Special purpose (i.e., used as filler if a show if off in a given week, or we are traveling on the road somewhere and listening in the car, and my wife doesn’t like my ā€œboringā€ podcasts):
Run Fool!
Crime Junkie
Car Talk (yes, it’s been off the air for years, and the cars are outdated, but the wit is timeless)

I've been listening to podcasts for 20 some years now. Most of what I listen to is focused on politics/current events or pop culture. Here's some highlights of what I currently subscribe to:

  • 60 Songs That Explain the '90s/2000s
  • BBC Global News Podcast
  • KCRW Left, Right & Center
  • NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour
  • Stuff You Should Know/Stuff You Missed in History Class
  • GD Politics
  • Hang Up and Listen (from Slate)
  • Political Gabfest (from Slate)
  • Today Explained (from VOX)
  • Today's Top Tune (from KCRW)
  • NPR's Sources and Methods
  • Hit Parade (from Slate)
  • What Next (from Slate)
I also really like "The Runcast" from KEXP which is a biweekly running playlist that comes out usually May through September. I listen to that when I run and often go back an re-listen to older episodes.

During the football season I really like CBS's Fantasy Football Today podcast as well.

I save my Wednesdays for planning-related podcasts.

I think "Upzoned" has flown the coop. There hasn't been a new show in months. :-(

I used to listen to "Talking Headways," but I didn't find it compelling after a six-month trial.

What are these podcasts that you speak of ? How do you find them ?, is there a subscription cost ?, are they only audio ?

Well, it is not like your current listening device...

Most are free. You can get them from Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or any number of other places. Some have video formats as well, but I only do audio podcasts because I listen while driving and working.

These look like great suggestions. I don't listen to a lot, but I do like:

Hidden Brain
Strong Towns
Lore (yes, I'm lame)

and finally Unwell. That's a weird little off-beat fiction podcast in five seasons about a fictitious town called Mount Absalom, Ohio that I accidentally fell completely in love with. Strange story, weird stuff. I loved it.

I was thinking about it this morning and I think the sweet spot for podcasts (for me at least) is around 30 minutes. There are a few that I had subscribed to that were a couple hours, and I realized that I was not going to dedicate that much time for a podcast. A book yes, but not a podcast.

The Daily (depending on topics)
The Journal (depending on topics)
Up First
Morning Brew Daily (all day everyday)

Wow, you guys are good about podcasts -

I have a one hour commute both ways, every day so I do listen to a lot of podcasts but mine are more "I need to listen to comething to get out of my head":

My Favorite Murder
Crime Junkie
Smartless
Park Predators
National Park After Dark
Madigan's Pubcast
Breaking Bread
Good Hang
Locations Unknown
Off the Trails
How I Built This
Spooked
Dark Downeast
The New Yorker
Disgraceland
Stuff You Should Know
The Moth
Snap Judgement
Econ Dev Show (something more work-y lol)

Just starting:

Brief Recess
Two Hot Takes

I also listen to A Journey Through Lent - it's only 5 minutes a day and it's pretty good

I will give a go to the ones you all listen - got burnt out on Hidden Brain

So I love podcasts and listen to them most anytime I am in the car by myself.

My current rotation:

Politicology
Pod Save America
Make Me Smart
Marketplace
Freakonomics
Hidden Brain
How We Survive
2 or 3 Spatial/GIS/Geography that aren't real active

One of my favorites that I have listened to is only 7 episodes, however the main character is simply fascinating. I know that some folks here will back me up on this one, too.
