Daily things 5️⃣ Five Things Friday

1. Had a nice afternoon yesterday not being at work
2. The Girl has a run this weekend, but it might be wet
3. Christmas shopping should be finished this weekend I hope
4. Christmas cards are going out late this year because I could not get approval from one of the subjects for a photo
5. Thinking of how I can boycott going to BIL over holidays because of their anti-vax stance

1) Going to write my self-evaluation today. I've gathered my info/dates/completed items and will get the bulk of the writing done this morning.

2) I hate writing evaluations. And this year my usual boss is gone so the Director is reading it. New audience.

3) I've set up a gift basket for my aunt as a Thank You for all the heavy lifting she's been doing with my mom.

4) My sister and I have also organized a basket for my cousin, as she's been a huge support, as well. Different theme than my aunt, but 2 baskets of Thanks!

5) At home today and not feeling the work vibe.

  1. It's been a 4 day week for me but feels like 6 days
  2. Everyone is tired in the office
  3. My little person was in a mood this morning, hopefully her day improves
  4. My eldest was exposed to COVID at work, she's getting tested today (she's vaxxed and boosted)
  5. This weekend's home improvement project is installing pegboard and shelves above my garage workbench.

1. I am slowly getting my autonomy back after weeks of anxiety induced sluggishness due to school stress

2. I cant wait until 2:15, when I leave my office to work from home for the rest of the day (Friday!)

3. One more final left, wish me luck!

4. I am questioning whether or not I want to continue grad school part time, I have come to the conclusion that I cant work and study at the same time, I need to do one or the other.

5. Going full time student would be bad for my finances, so I cant do it for at least another year.

5. Going full time student would be bad for my finances, so I cant do it for at least another year.

I waited 10 years between undergrad & grad for various reasons, 1 of which are noted in #5.

1) My workout this morning was really good.
2) I missed my webinar. Oh well, I am maxed out in carryover CM credits anyways.
3) It looks like we get to go to court to deal with a developer because of an approval interpretation that they don't agree with. All of us at the City, as well as our attorneys are a little surprised they have the gumption to challenge it given how clear the language is.
4) Wife said that the number of "traveler staff" is now higher than the number of full time staff for nurses and surgical technicians in her section of the hospital.
5) I am so over this day...

1. I feel exceptionally recharged after yesterday's unexpected snow day
2. I mean I feel more recharged than if I'd just finished a whole week of vacation (as I recently did the week of Christmas)
3. There are some really cool seasonal things associated with winter
4. The feeling of drinking a snifter of brandy reading a good book while seated next to the fire after a morning of cross country skiing is incomparable
5. It's important to savor those sorts of feelings when they happen, because those are the fleeting butterfly of happiness landing on you moments in life

1. Bringing this back after the random post-a-thon hiatus is a good move
2. Today's high is projected to be 35 & last weekend I was wearing shorts
3. The NYE bonfire that was postponed last weekend will be lit tonight (I'll be lit too probably)
4. My brother picked up mom this week. It was nice to have her here for the last 10 days but I wish she was more comfortable going out (I understand though)
5. Taking The Girl back to college this weekend as classes start Monday for her

1) Rough night with the dog. I'm operating on about 4 hours of sleep.

2) Cold here. Had to find my gloves - which were still in the coat pockets from last week!

3) Bought Hubby a puzzle mat/board and some puzzles for Christmas. I think I picked a hard one to start with . . .

4) This weekend will be rough.

5) Next week will be worse. I need to plan accordingly.

1. Anxiety and akathisia are finally beginning to subside, as I am tapering down the meds that caused it as a side effect.

2. I just finished my quarterly report for work

3. Volvo 240s arent cheap anymore. One recently sold on Bring a Trailer for 35.5k !

4. Cant wait till the end of the workday, I may RJ this afternoon depending on how much I get done, probs not though.

5. My driving anxiety is beginning to subside too, which was also a side effect of the meds I am coming off of.

1. Is today Friday?
2. Camembert & cukes on a seeded bretzel roll for lunch.
3. Finally got the car's oil changed.
4. Everyone in our expat world is traveling this weekend but us. Woe is me.
5. Might try to convince Hubby to do a day trip to France on Sunday.

1. friday is beginning of 3 day weekend
2. retirement party in our office
3. forecast for snow this weekend
4. biofreeze is helping with my knee
5. was called out in office meeting for not taking all my vacation 3 days & having to much in my sick bank - 3 months over what will paid out

1. Yes, this for the first time ever is a three day weekend for me
2. Junior is supposed to be studying for finals this weekend
3. I need to come up with a good birthday present for Mrs. Maister pronto
4. Having a tough time with the whole work thing today
5. Discussions about office supplies are typically quite dull

1. Pulled the snow shovel & sled out of storage - gettin' ready for Sunday
2. There are a few trees in the park & adjacent woods I'm worried about coming down in this storm
3. As long as we keep power, we'll be good
4. It's a 3-day weekend but our plans will be somewhat dictated by factors out of my control
5. I should've gotten new tires for the truck.

1. Pulled the snow shovel & sled out of storage - gettin' ready for Sunday
1. The current forecast for my neck of the woods on Sunday is 1 to 3 inches of snow and ice.
2. That forecast, of course, will change roughly 37 times between now and Sunday.
3. Our actual biggest concern is ice in treetops and the possibility of limbs crashing down and the loss of electric power.
4. The one bit of prep I've done is moving the grill into the screened porch in case we do lose power for an extended period and I need it to prepare meals.
5. Go Dawgs!

1. I like how in the first season of Cobra Kai they drenched the show in nostalgic ooze, but kept knocking Johnny in the head with present-day realities. I thought that was a good use of meta storytelling.
2. I am liking the Book of Boba Fett on Disney+. A lot of youtubers are taking a dump on the third episode, but I say, c'mon!, give the show some time to breathe. The addition of Danny Trejo to the cast was brilliant!
3. I listened to the latest Star Wars: The High Republic audiobook (Fallen Star) and didn't think it was that good.
4. Last year I tried listening to the Star Wars Ronin (Visions) audiobook and was so bored that I couldn't even get halfway through it.
5. Overall, I do enjoy the main stories that Disney has been developing for the Star Wars franchise, and I can't wait to see what they do to the comic books. Marvel's recent Eye of the Storm comic about Marchion Ro is off to a great start!

1) Am waiting to start Boba Fett because I have to watch with Hubby, and he's been away dealing with his mom.

2) Going to be cold this weekend!

3) Stress is a permanent guest in my house.

4) I really wanted to see the Turner exhibit at the Kimbell museum, but timing is going to make it difficult to get there before it leaves.

5) I am hoping that my fave white wine is still on sale this weekend.

1. We have a 2 hour delay - but I came in anyway.
2. My body clock didn't care that we had a 2 hour delay.
3. Someone drew a dicpic in the snow in the park.
4. We may get a little more snow overnight.
5. Happy Friday!

1. A greater sense of anticipation fills the air than usual.
2. Today is a quintessential Friday as Fridays go.
3. I need to bring Mrs. Maister around to the idea that Junior is a trade school kinda guy. College was never in the cards for him
4. That means having to shed cherished illusions and dreams. Sorry.
5. I haven't watched a SINGLE NFL game this year. Not one.

College isn't for everyone. If you are so geared and can take the physical punishment, the trades are a good way to go.

1. Not all trades are terribly physically demanding either.
2. I think lots of parents need to learn that their dreams may not have ever been the same as their children's. And it's their life.
3. Have to fire someone today. It's just not working out and needs to happen but it never gets any easier when you're impacting someone's life.
4. This weekend will be the worst weather wise in the four winters I've lived in the south. I'll take those odds.
5. I'm going to be published! A proposal with a former professor has been approved and we're writing a case study for ICMA/NASPAA ( Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration) . Don't feel bad, I had to look it up too!

1) COLD here in the metroplex. :snowflake::snowflake::snowflake:

2) I'm in the office today. Turns out a coworker is having a meeting down the hall. I guess I picked the wrong day to be in.

3) We have some interviews scheduled this afternoon.

4) Going to another museum this weekend. It'll be cold out but we like to feel "cultured".

5) My MIL has turned into a horrible patient. Or it may be that they dialed down her pain meds and she's cranky. Either way, she's driving Hubby up the wall.

1. Cold weather is museum weather.
2. My oldest son is my most intelligent child, but he's no scholar. I recognized that and steered him to the trades. He's a helicopter mechanic.
3. Chinese food for lunch. I'd eat at this restaurant more if they'd re-open their dining room.
4. The Chinese restaurant must have a new cook. So far, so good.
5. Hot and sour soup tastes good when my throat is scratchy.

1) Yesterday was the worst day of COVID. I am feeling much better today, but I am not messing around with this. I am taking it easy, hyper hydrating, loading up on C, D, Zinc, and more.
2) It is official that my kids are all going to different schools starting Monday. The older one will be going to the public middle school and we were lucky that the two younger ones will be going to the neighborhood public elementary school. Our middle son has made enough progress that they will be able to provide services for him this time. We pray that it is not a repeat of what it was like before. The Principal and I had quite the falling out years ago when she forced our middle son to transfer out.
3) The pressure valve on our water heater has been letting water out after we take showers. I opened it up and some debris came out. I hope that addresses the issue. If not, I think I will spend the extra money to have a tankless water heater installed.
4) My home office is surprisingly functional. However, it did not work well for the kids because the 2nd TV and Nintendo Switch is in here as well.
5) I just realized that we have not checked the mail for the past week.

1. Maybe a couple inches of snow tonight, maybe not.
2. A baby hedgehog is called a hoglet.
3. Mrs. P doesn't want us to host the Superbowl party this year & I can't blame her.
4. It wasn't convincing, but USMNT won last night.
5. It's still early on a Friday...we'll see what the rest of the day brings.

  • Lake effect snow
  • Meeting with the Twp assessor to discuss TIF revenue calculations
  • Planning to watch the movie Groundhog's Day tonight
  • Planning to visit the local City where the movie was filmed
  • Probably look put together a parts list and plan for converting my 1996 Trek 970 mtn bike into a simple 3 speed cruiser as the parts to fix it up for full/original 21 speed mountain bike status are not readily available anymore.

1. Pet peeve: people who say or write "Groundhog's" Day instead of "Groundhog" Day. Looking at you @mendelman :D
2. I decided today was bring your dog to work day. She's now lying on the floor of the administrative suite making people step over her!
3. Just scored tickets to Buffett in Savannah in April. :parrot:
4. Leaving on a short little cruise to the Bahamas in the morning. Going to be a bit cooler than normal but hey, it's the Bahamas.
5. Bonus pet peeve: People who say or write "St. Patty's Day" instead of "St. Paddy's Day" :ireland:

Pfft.

no way whatever GIF

1) Overnight tonight will be in the teens and we are expected to get 1 to 2 inches of snow. On Thursday it is expected to hit 70 degrees.
2) I feel for the CM for some of the stuff he has to deal with. The more I work with him, the more confident that I am that I would never want his job.
3) Just finished my final cup of coffee for the day. I have no idea what I am going to eat for lunch. I was going to cook steaks for dinner, but given the weather tomorrow, we will go out to dinner tonight and I will cook at home tomorrow.
4) There are some people who say that they really like the design of the Tesla Cybertruck. The longer I look at it, the more confident that I am in saying that it looks ridiculous.
5) I really want to transform my back yard into an informal English countryside garden.

1. There's a lot of work to do around the house this weekend
2. I truly truly don't feel like doing any of it. Not a bit
3. I like winter, but my thoughts are starting to turn to spring planting
4. Dogs can be really funny and nice at the same time
5. I wish I could RJ

1) I can hear the melted ice dripping off the roof.

2) No plans this weekend. Will probably read.

3) Going to cut out early today.

4) MIL is still in the hospital.

5) It's all going to refreeze tonight. :cold:

1) I am going to do some tile work in the bathroom over the weekend. The shower will have more than 1000 individual tiles in it, so yea, it might take some time.
2) Earlier this week I read a couple journal articles that discussed binaural beats and how different frequencies have different effects.
3) I have been doing light cardio this week as part of COVID recovery, but Sunday will be the first weight session in the gym. I am guessing I will have to start at 60% to 80% what my previous regular sets were.
4) We heard that a local realtor has contacts to buy several buildings in our downtown. I think he has good enough intentions, but I have concerns over the long term impact of this.
5) Our HOA is now requiring we screen outdoor garbage cans from all other properties.

1. If the weather holds, might go to the local uni & watch lacrosse between 2 nationally ranked teams in their division.
2. There are 2 projects I'd like to get done in the house if possible.
3. We won't be hosting the SuperBowl party, so a friend is taking that task over.
4. The is strong potential for grilling Saturday night.
5. A year ago right now, mom was in the hospital for her back issues.

1. I am looking forward to pursuing my vegetable gardening and baking hobbies in retirement
2. Spring will be here sooner than you know
3. Same as it ever was....same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
4. As musical instruments go the 'weird ones' include bassoons and accordions
5. Barbecued anything sounds good right now.

1) Pizza night tonight because we don't do it during the :football:Super Bowl:football:.

2) Someone asked about their dues and miscalculated in our favor. While I would love the extra program :money:, I let him know the total was less and where he erred. So he's paid and we're both happy.

3) MIL is out of the hospital but I'm still worried about her.

4) Is it ok to not want to be at work today? I really don't want to be here right now.

5) Date night tomorrow for dinner!!:heart::heart:

1. This week we've had several 'developers' come in to look at property - the majority of these guys are seeking entitlements only right now.
2. Local restaurant has been circling the drain lately closed yesterday & moved out. New owner took it over 5 years ago & started going down hill the next day.
3. We got a new carrier about a year ago & now the post office wants us to move our mailbox that has been in the same place since 1986.
4. Mom fell last night & dislocated her hip. Surgery is today.
5. Get to see The Girl this weekend.

1. I'm wanting the weekend to get here but at the same time feel like its not going to provide the break I need
2. Day 6 no oven
3. We've ordered a new oven control panel which will hopefully get here next Weds.
4. I just noticed this morning we never took down the Christmas decorations in the dining room. Guess we're still 'basking in the afterglow of the holidays'
5. I wonder if Americans deserve the negative stereotypes attributed to them

1. The moral/mood here has taken another turn - but not for the better.
2. A large sculpture collapsed last night in the bigger town next door. It was a centerpiece in their big capital quality of life initiative.
3. Mom was moved to rehab yesterday. She sounded good and said (sarcastically) that now the fun begins.
4. Hey maister, I got one better - Finance still has the city hall Christmas tree (which they didn't put up this year), laying in the floor of an empty office in its box where it was placed in Nov to put up.
5. Friday = :pizza: & for dinner.

1. Very short council meeting last night.
2. Pretty sure we'll pay for that the next two meetings.
3. As long as we're not talking about having to layoff employees I don't despise budget season nearly as much as some.
4. I should have brought my dog to work today.
5. 4 weeks from today I'll be waking up in Key West.

1) Came in to the office but forgot there's a committee meeting in the conf room across the hall. Noisy buggers!

2) Only plan this weekend is to rescue a plant from mom (she does not have a green thumb).

3) I'm stressing out over small things because I have bigger things to worry about but can't do anything about.

4) Anyone else ready for Spring?

5) I would love a liquid lunch option today, but that ain't going to happen.

Ordered seeds for the garden this week.
It's 20 degrees with a real feel of 8 right now.
Parking lot was empty when I got here five minutes late this morning.
Both of today's meetings were virtual; why didn't I WFH?
I packed some tuna and cucumbers for lunch today. But I'm freezing. I should have packed something hot instead.

What restaurant serves poutine within in a five hour radius from mendelman?

Some things I learned about myself just by observing social media posts:
  1. It seems most of the people I went to high school with are religious,
  2. I am not.
  3. It seems most of the people I went to high school with are conservative,
  4. I am not.
  5. Decades later, because of what I have seen on Facebook, I think I have a good mental explainer as to why today I don't have strong bonds with most of the people I went to high school with. I always thought there was something wrong with me, but given the strength of the friendships from my college years, I don't worry about it much anymore. (The religious and political tendencies observations I have made have been revelatory to me.)

What restaurant serves poutine within in a five hour radius from mendelman?
A restaurant located in the suburb one over (~15 min drive to the northish) from my suburb.

We're a hugely diverse Metro. For example, my suburb has one of the largest authentic Japanese grocery/market/food court business in the State and certainly the Great Lakes region.

So, why not?

Poutine is international cuisine.
