Vehicles / bikes 🏍 Car Talk

Let's talk black wheels. We're looking for our next vehicle and I really really really like color. We just sold a bright blue MINI -- the only color in our garage -- and my SO has found a gray sedan that he likes. I suggested painting the brakes red to give it a pop of color; he's suggesting adding black gloss wheels to the mod list.

I don't hate them but I'm undecided...

Welp...the 2016 Chrysler T&C minivan is going to need, at least, $4,500 of repairs (failing camshaft [ie total engine rebuild] is the majority of that).

Total repairs would be $8,200 including a bunch of other stuff along with the above.

So...no point doing the repairs when that would be better spent on a slightly used new-to-us minivan.

Yay for car ownership. Considering a 2022-2023 Toyota Sienna if we can get one for the 'right' price.

https://worldwideauctioneers.com/a-team-van/ You might consider a model like this one.

I got black wheels on the new mini, but it has a black-out package on it so the silver/grey ones didn't look right. I know because the internet ad pictures had the black wheels on it. When I went to look at it, it had another wheel with silver accents. Long story short, after I drove it and all, I told them I'd buy it they put the black wheels back on it like was advertised. They did.

Vans. I actually really enjoy vans. I've had several over the years, but none have I liked as much as our current Kia Sedona. I know. Kia. But I freaking love it. Comfortable, powerful - truly - and lots of storage, easy in and out the rear seats, tons of extras for lots less than what we were comparing to for the pricing. Takes a beating, big time. Just take a look at Kia Sedona, that's all I'm saying.

I don't have a van fetish. Don't make it weird. :)

It's just a damn ugly truck. Oh, and Toyota - don't laugh. Y'all f***ed up the best looking mid-size pickup in the market, you dummies.
The new Tundra is hideous. Especially with chrome on the grille surround, looks like Hulk Hogan. The new front end and more importantly the lack of a proper V8 is why I bought a 2021 Tundra instead of a 2022. The new Sequoia on the other hand, looks much better. Having the separation between the grille and the bumper makes all the difference.

The black trim around the wheels lends itself to the black wheels. I agree -- it looks better on your new one.

I could lean toward dark gray wheels on a gray car but that might be too much. Hmm.

At what point can Kia be taken seriously as a car brand?

We're there, I promise! (Also I think Hyundai makes all the motors, so to that extent I guess). I had no interest in it, but it's a solid vehicle. Rumor has it that KIA is looking at making a small, hybrid pickup. If they do it, I will get one and drive to you, so we can road trip till you're a believer. :)

This showed up across the street this morning.

So this morning you woke up on the set of a Monty Python sketch? :)

I like black wheels in theory but it's really dependent on the vehicle and the color of the rest of the trim and everything. Just slapping some black wheels on any ole vehicle isn't gonna cut it but if the particular vehicle has a "black out" package, like @Planit's Mini, then it looks pretty good most of the time IMO. I do agree that the red brakes can give it a nice pop of color too.

I consider them a solid company so It will be a short trip if that's the criteria. If you make it the 2,000 miles here, I'll buy you the poison of your choosing, beer, soda, coffee, hair gel, etc...

Hair gel! I'll be laughing all day for that!

That's it. That's the one I want. I really want a Ford Maverick. I've always had a soft spot for small pickups. This little KIA would fit my bill though.
You can always DIY something really unique with a Smyth Performance ute kit! https://www.smythkitcars.com/new-beetle-truck-conversion

I've actually seen Smyth kits in real life for the Beetle, Jetta and a Dodge Charger (that was painted Mopar Pink).

Another cool little pickup is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. They're super popular with the outdoorsy hike & mountain bike crowd here locally. In 2025 they're adding the hybrid drive line to it, which will make it tremendously appealing. At least 4 people in my group drive Tucson hybrids and love them.

Yeah, I'm seeing these around and liking them lots. I've never looked at the smythkit thing that's cool! My kid (20) would be into that, and I'm sending him a link now!

It's funny -- when I've thought about blacked out packages in the past, I always think about the lights being blacked out as well. But you're right -- the black elements on this car lends itself to matching the black wheels.

I don't have pictures on my phone of the (probable) next vehicle and I don't remember how much of the vehicle is blacked out. We are considering carbon fiber for the side mirror covers so that would blend...

Might end up with a new or newer Honda Odyssey. Good selection and pricing at the volume dealer in a nearby suburb.

This dealer has a couple black on black base models that look like a mafia family vehicle.

You can call it "the hearse". LOL

People rag on minivans, but they are the absolute best vehicle for transporting bikes--low ride height, but tall cargo box, and fully-lockable/weatherproof.

The front end is Edsel-level ugly (and on the Tundra, too), and they have widened the entire body, lengthened the cab and front end, and rounded/softened everything for mileage standards (I'm guessing). Taken all together, it is just horrid.

And, please, don't get me going on black wheels. I was hoping it was a brief fad, but no. This sin against decent aesthetics must stop now!

Eh... It's not that bad.

Twenty years ago. Try to keep up.

Hyundai bought Kia out of bankruptcy in 1998. The operate as basically different divisions of the same company, sharing engineering and platforms but each is free to define their own brand identity. In the period between, say, 1998 and 2008, Hyundai was arrivig as a top brand and brought Kia up to standards as well.

I owned a 2005 Hyundai Elantra and it truly was a fine automobile. The Kia analog was the Spectra, then the Forte.

If I had to replace my current car right now, I'd probably be looking at a Hyundai or Kia.

I wish every single company that made pickups was making a Maverick-size truck so I could cross shop them, but yeah, I want a Maverick, too. Just enough truck for the few "truck things" I do regularly and doesn't have the "child killer" hood height of even the Rangers and Tacomas these days, let alone the full-sizers.

We text drove a 2024 Kia Carnival, 2024 Chrysler Pacifica and a 2024 Honda Odyssey. It's going to be a choice between the Pacifica or the Odyssey and then we'll decide if we go new or slightly used. There are pluses and minuses between new and used and pricing and longevity and efficient money use, etc, etc.

We need to get our housing set (still waiting to hear about our rental house lease renewal.

So does anyone have experience with that car headlight stuff? I'm seeing so many options and I'm just thinking I should buy some new headlights instead.

What do you mean options? I just bought a new headlight bulb for my car; I got the cheapest kind. It matched the other one pretty well in terms of hue. (I did buy a pair though figuring that the other side is due.)

My right side front blinker has been cloudy for a while so I checked it out. It turns out it's cracked and the haziness is from dust getting in. I ordered a new one online (actually got a pair figuring it would look weird with a brand new clear one on one side and a ten year old one with wear and tear on the other).

The lens or the actual headlights? The repair shop restored my cloudy lens in my prior car after an accident, a short time later I was doing it again, and again... It looked good for a bit but it quickly returned to the cloudy state like 4 to 6 months. I used a 3M kit that I picked up at the autoparts store. It was cheap ($13 or so), easy to use, and did a good job. I am sure that there is some sort of sealant that would add a little bit more life. New aftermarket lenses were $100 for a pair.

There is a UV blocker you're supposed to put on after. My choice has been made for me. I inspected the lights and there's a crack so buffing out the dull is not going to work. At least my lights are only $70 for a pair.

So I ordered the lights through CarParts.com. The original order said they would be delivered Saturday (6/1). As of Saturday, they hadn't even been picked up by the shipper. It looks like they have now but I don't know how long it will take for them to get here. The company is is Grand Prairie, TX (between here and Dallas) and the current status is: "Inbound scan at destination" (and has been since yesterday) which doesn't mean anything to me. Still haven't seen the parts.

I was looking for a sun visor last week for a 2008 vehicle. It appears that once you get past about 10-15 years car parts are much more difficult to find. I could find plenty 2010+, but nothing earlier. The brand would sell me one for about $300. Looks like I'm going to have to find a junkyard with a similar model.

So the lamp assemblies were delivered today. They came from a freight forwarder, mind you (not USPS/UPS/Fedex, but "Lone Star Overnight"). They arrived in two shipments three and a half hours apart. I ordered them as a single part number as a matched set. Someone has to be losing money on that.

Finally decided on some headlights from CJ Pont Parts. I checked Amazon and other places for deals, but everything said those lights aren't sealed and people have issues with water getting in them. I'll stick with a more legit parts place for my lights. Although I have no problem getting my trunk struts from Amazon. I just want the thing to stop closing on my head.

I did some car-dio today... maybe that's autio? Anyway, worked up a good sweat in the late afternoon Texas heat changing out the blinker/daytime running lamp assemblies. This is the new one versus the one that had the cracked housing:

I get most of my mustang parts from Dennis Carpenter and National Parts Depot, mainly because they are somewhat local and I can pick up parts there. My 67 mustang has parts from a 66 and 68, thanks to a prior owner (some of the 66 parts might be from ford themself because my car was made early in the model year), so it's helpful to be able to open boxes without haven't to worry about sending something back. I don't think Carpenters sells anything for mustangs newer than 79.

I'm considering getting a ebike after summer. My office is only 2 miles from home and my kid will be at neighborhood schools for the next 6 years. I could probably make a regular bike work, but I've got a couple of decent hills on the way, I'm 45, out of shape, and don't want to show up to work sweaty. I'd like to get in decent enough shape to not need the assistance.

Anyone have one or had good experience with a brand or style?

I'll see how this CJ Pony Parts treats me. They did give me a veteran's discount of a whopping 8% and they do carry all the stuff for my 2001 mustang. Except a good steering wheel cover. I'm on the search for one of those.

My local shop sells a ton of Specialized e-bikes, which are mostly all electric assist. Well designed, good tools for programming and diagnosis. You really do get what you pay for with bikes.
