Had you heard / read about the new sport event this year - Ski mountaineering aka SkiMo

It's been all the rage in my neck of the woods for a few years now- got very popular at the height of Covid when people were looking to get out and conventional Nordic and alpine skiing weren't as available.

I've only ever done one race that was sort of like SkiMo, and it was kind of fun, but not fun enough to want to ever do it again. I have two pairs of telemark skis set up with climbing skins and will take a leisurely uphill lap when lines are long or, when there's a chance to grab some very early-morning turns in fresh snow before the lifts run/before work. In my case on the tele skis, my heels are free on the up and the down- old school. SkiMo goes to a fixed heel on the downhill.

The people who do this competitively are in insane shape, as you might imagine, and the tech to make a ski setup light but robust enough to ski back downhill is impressive. For me, though, the compromise in terms of downhill performance wouldn't be worth it.

I've got the opening ceremonies on right now in the background (on Peacock) while I work in my den. The older I get, the more I love the parade of nations each time around for both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

I had never heard of SkiMo until they described it on a sports podcast I was listening to a few days ago where they had a segment on what they were looking forward to watching. It sounds pretty interesting and I'm definitely going to check it out.

Besides SkiMo, I'm looking forward to the Biathlon. I don't ski and I don't shoot but I enjoy watching the athletes combine those two skills for some reason. It would be pretty cool to have some of the competitors wearing HR monitors. The skiing must really raise their HR so I wonder if they are able to quickly bring their HR and breathing back under control in order to hit their target accurately when they get to the shooting portions.

I didn't realize that is what it is called. When I was in College, there were a group of people who would do this on a regular basis in the UP.

Personally, I have zero interest in watching the super bowl but I will be watching the Olympics. I am looking forward to the Downhill, Snowboarding, and Hockey.

I love how Peacock is doing the streaming on this - you can pick what you want, watch it live or on replay, you can watch the schmaltzy stuff if you want or watch the talking heads if you want - or more importantly, you don't have to watch what you don't want and you can surf between events - it's the best Olympics coverage imho

We had the Olympics on most of the weekend, even if we were not fully paying attention. Overall, I am super impressed with the coverage of different events and I think it is awesome how involved Snoop is with various elements. I think he is enjoying himself.

We rewatched the opening ceremony and I thought it presented the region in a very good light. I did have a "Wait I know that Place" moment when they showed McCarty's Cove in Marquette MI. I didn't realize that Nick Baumgartner was still competing. We went to college together at NMU and I worked at the ski hill that he would snowboard at, but that is why they showed that clip.

Lindsay Vonn injury must have been really bad - transported to another hospital & 2 surgeries.

Controlling your heartrate while shooting a target rifle with a very light stock (the opposite of what you'd want to keep things steady) is exactly what it's all about! Across the street from my office is an inn run by a former Olympic Biathlon coach. There's an interview with him somewhere where he talks about training to will your heartrate lower for the shooting part.

Local Nordic kids around here have access to the US Biathlon training facility nearby. Very cool.

We watched some curling over the weekend.
So did we. It's pretty dynamic. USA really whiffed it against S. Korea.

I started watching biathlon on Sunday morning, but was forced to watch CBS Sunday morning instead. Will have to see if a replay is available. @WSU MUP Student @Faust_Motel
