Had you heard / read about the new sport event this year - Ski mountaineering aka SkiMo

It's been all the rage in my neck of the woods for a few years now- got very popular at the height of Covid when people were looking to get out and conventional Nordic and alpine skiing weren't as available.

I've only ever done one race that was sort of like SkiMo, and it was kind of fun, but not fun enough to want to ever do it again. I have two pairs of telemark skis set up with climbing skins and will take a leisurely uphill lap when lines are long or, when there's a chance to grab some very early-morning turns in fresh snow before the lifts run/before work. In my case on the tele skis, my heels are free on the up and the down- old school. SkiMo goes to a fixed heel on the downhill.

The people who do this competitively are in insane shape, as you might imagine, and the tech to make a ski setup light but robust enough to ski back downhill is impressive. For me, though, the compromise in terms of downhill performance wouldn't be worth it.

I've got the opening ceremonies on right now in the background (on Peacock) while I work in my den. The older I get, the more I love the parade of nations each time around for both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

I had never heard of SkiMo until they described it on a sports podcast I was listening to a few days ago where they had a segment on what they were looking forward to watching. It sounds pretty interesting and I'm definitely going to check it out.

Besides SkiMo, I'm looking forward to the Biathlon. I don't ski and I don't shoot but I enjoy watching the athletes combine those two skills for some reason. It would be pretty cool to have some of the competitors wearing HR monitors. The skiing must really raise their HR so I wonder if they are able to quickly bring their HR and breathing back under control in order to hit their target accurately when they get to the shooting portions.

I didn't realize that is what it is called. When I was in College, there were a group of people who would do this on a regular basis in the UP.

Personally, I have zero interest in watching the super bowl but I will be watching the Olympics. I am looking forward to the Downhill, Snowboarding, and Hockey.
