Trump Tower: Chicago

Winner of the show....

Did the winner of Trumps reality show pick Chicago last year? or was it that ocean side resort in California? If it was Chicago, wouldn't the winner of the show who got to manage one of Trumps properties be making decisions like this  ;) :-c You never hear about that job those people are supposed to be winning ($250,000 executive for a year right?)

From what I can recall from last year, this guy will be managing its construction. Trump himself, being the building's owner, obviously has (second, behind King Richard II) final say on its final appearecnce.

Um, yeah, I believe that...

I'm sure we'll all get to see pictures of him wearing his hard hat /armani combo. He is simply another ingredient in Trump's shameless attempt publicize himself and his projects so that he is constantly the center of attention.

Just another dog and pony show eh? ;)

Trup is definitely a shameless self promoter. Do you think his name will remain on any of his buildings after he's gone?

Trump is now considering raising the height of the spire to make in the tallest building in America.

I don't get it. The week prior he's against the spire, now he wants to extend it another 100ft.

Hard work, failed marriages, and unabashed self-promotion.

If it is anything like the proposed Trump tower in Toronto, The Donald isn't putting any money in - he's being paid for his name. The real backer in Trump Toronto is a Russian-Canadian industrialist.

Bingo!

In fact, that is how Trump really made his money. It's not unusual as this is how most developers operate. They find a number of investors willing to upfront the capital in exchange for a return on investment. .

Two weeks ago: Trump diddn't want a spire, but he was forced to include it in his design.
One week ago: Trump considers extending the spire so his building will be taller then the Empire State Building, making it the second tallest in America. Yes, the same spire he originally did not want in the first place.
Now: Trump considers extending the spire again, this time to make his building the tallest in America and the second tallest building in the world, surpassed only by the 1670 ft Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

Trump may aspire to top Petronas Towers

February 24, 2005

BY DAVID ROEDER Business Reporter

Reaching just a little higher for international acclaim, Donald Trump is pondering whether to make his new Chicago building taller than even the twin Petronas Towers in Malaysia.

It's a matter of how tall to make the spire for his new Trump International Hotel & Tower at 401 N. Wabash, the former site of the Sun-Times Building.

With his architects at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, Trump is looking at spire configurations that would qualify the building as being taller than Sears Tower, and hence the tallest in the United States.

But a top source at the Trump Organization said the developer might aim higher -- literally -- and try to top Petronas as well. There's only a 33-foot height difference between Sears and the Petronas towers.

"We are studying the possibility of a building taller than Sears and possibly beyond that," the source said. "The decision should be made over the next month or so."

Trump is not shooting for the title of world's tallest, currently in the hands of the 1,670-foot Taipei 101 building in Taiwan. Exceeding Petronas in official measurements would require something at least 1,483 feet tall.

None of the spire alternatives involves increasing the size of the occupied portion of the new condo and hotel complex, where Trump has reported more than $600 million in sales. The spire would be ornamental but technically part of the structure and therefore figure in the height measurement.

Current plans put the 92-story building at 1,360 feet, some 90 feet short of the Sears mark.

The source said the various spire plans could add from $2 million to $5 million to the cost of the $750 million project. City approval would be needed to change the height, but the source said City Hall already has offered positive reviews.

Spokeswoman Connie Buscemi of the city's planning department denied matters have gone that far but confirmed enthusiasm for the idea. "We haven't seen the design yet, but we'd certainly look forward to it and be amenable to changes," she said.

When conceiving the project in 2001, Trump had the "world's tallest" title in mind but abandoned that goal after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 that year.

Fears about skyscrapers being terrorist targets have subsided since then and buyer demand for tall buildings has increased, the Trump source said. "The tall building is back in vogue. It's like fashion. It's like dress sizes," he said.

All claims to height records, however, would be shattered if a proposed 1,776-foot building at Ground Zero in Manhattan wins approval from New York authorities and is built.

Update: Trump is now considering World's Tallest Building

http://archrecord.construction.com/news/daily/archives/050301trump.asp
When Trump first announced the project in 2001, he instructed SOM to design the world’s tallest building. SOM’s designers were ready to meet with Trump Organization officials on the morning of September 11, 2001 to review a 2,000-foot tall scheme when the meeting was cancelled as downtown office buildings were evacuated in light of that day’s terrorist attacks.

Now that some of the worry about tall building has passed... who knows what could happen.

In addition to that Architectural Record article, there was a blurb in the Chicago press about a week or so ago about Trump reporting extremely strong sales on his proposed Chicago tower. That, along with the ego of King Richard II, makes me wonder if we might not yet see that building re-expanded upwards a bit for real, perhaps to even include occupied floors that are higher than in the Sears Tower (as was originally proposed).

^o)

I also note that those articles mentioned that the material of that building's frame structure has been changed from steel to concrete, allowing the addition of a couple of floors without changing its actual height. Even in its current form, that might make it the world's tallest concrete-framed building, a title currently held by a building in China. Several other buildings in Chicago have held that title over the years, including Water Tower Place, 311 S Wacker Dr (that interesting building immediately south of the Sears Tower) and the 2 Prudential building.

Oh yea, I also agree with your observation that tall buildings are back.

:)

Lawsuit against Trump and his family businesses zeros in on Trump Tower Chicago
Since 2009, it's been off Trump's books, according to investigators, because he had taken a tax position that the Chicago tower was worthless. . .
. . . ...Trump was using the "worthless property" as collateral for bank loans to buy other things.
. . . Authorities suggest the alleged Chicago tower fraud rolled over for years, with Trump reviews and authentication every year from 2014 to 2021.

This Chicago Tribune article is probably more detailed, (but it won't let me read the article at this time):

I forgot about this thread. I took this photo about a dozen years ago while in Chicago one day. I love the juxtaposition of the old architecture to the more modern tower.

It reminded me of the layout of Gotham City where all the public transit led up to Wayne Tower... but in this case the owner is more like the Joker than Batman.
