(I know we have had plenty of music threads but hopefully, this one has a different spin on the previous.)

There is a station out of Philly that is running a contest (and moving into a new studio) for you to list your top 10 songs of all time. I have been putting some thought into this and I think I may be close to having my 10. What are your top 10 songs of all time? This link is from the radio station with some of their top 10!

Some of my favorites include: (I don't have 10 yet, still thinking)
Bob Marley - No Woman, No Cry
The Clash - Guns of Brixton
Genesis - Follow You, Follow Me
U2 - All I want is You
U2 - One
U2 - Can't Help Falling in Love
The Police - Every Little Thing She Does
Big Country - In a Big Country

Top 10 Classical (not in order)
Toccata and Fugue in D min - JS Bach
Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber
Magic Flute - Mozart
Brandenburg concerto No 3 - JS Bach

Thanks TN, this thread has me all flustered. The only thing I am positive about is the one - single greatest song (song being differentiated from a symphony, concherto and ditty). The single greatest song every written and know world wide is:

DRUM ROLL

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

I guarantee that this would change if you asked me tomorrow. It is tough to pin down only 10. This is what came off the top of my head this morning:

I Wanna Be Sedated – The Ramones
Atomic Garden – Bad Religion
Angel of Death – Slayer
Synchronicity II – The Police
Street Spirit (Fade Out) – Radiohead
Elephant Stone – Stone Roses
Love Love Love – The Queers
Elanor Rigby – The Beatles
Karma Police – Radiohead
Stigmata – Ministry

I'll second both I wanna be sedated and Elephant stone and add the following in no particular order.

Lou Reed - Wild Child
Tragically Hip - 38 Years Old
The Who - Pictures of Lily
Sex Pistols - Fri**in' in the Riggin'
Frank Zappa - Ti**ies's and Beer
Hoyt Axton - Della and a Dealer
John Prine - Sam Stone
The Pogues - Band Played Waltzing Matilda
Billy Bragg - No power without accountability

Reviewing my list, maybe we should change this to top 10 most underated songs of all time

Mine change daily as well....but here's my stab...in no particular order...

She - The Misfits
I Wanna Be Sedated - Ramones
London Calling - The Clash
Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Ballad of Dwight Fry - Alice Cooper
Runnin with the Devil - Van Halen
Goin to California - Led Zep
Archangel - Samhain
Back in the Saddle - Aerosmith
Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck - Prong

Big Country - In a Big Country

I am really having a tough time with the last 2, but I think maybe:
Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Queen - These are the days of our lives

but the references to the Stone Roses has thrown me.

This is sooooooo hard.

Here's a try though (in no particular order):

Nautical Disaster -- Tragically Hip
Swamp Thing -- Chameleons UK
Crazy -- Pylon
Without You -- Pietasters
Monkey Gone to Heaven -- Pixies
Los Angeles -- X
Hanging Tree -- Queens of the Stone Age
Rodeo Clowns -- G. Love and Special Sauce w/ Jack Johnson
Another Generation -- Fishbone
Black Metallic -- Catherine Wheel

"Bad Boy Having a Party" - Luther Vandross
"When Doves Cry" - Prince
"I'll Be There" - The Jackson 5
"Love & Happiness" - Al Green

Maister.....my top 10 classical would include Beethoven's 9th and Pictures At An Exhibition by Mzgorsky.

Bear Chorale

Alright, let me give it a shot. In no particular order, other than Stairway to Heaven.

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zepplin
Ole Slew Foot - Jim and Jesse
Low Rider - War
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
Tommy the Cat - Primus
Unforgettable - Nate King Cole
Knockin' on Heavens Door - Bob Dylan
Damage, Inc. - Metallica
Fellin' Alright - Grand Funk Railroad
War Pigs - Black Sabbath

Planderella, you are too organized! :) The Twilight Zone by Golden Earring is one of my favorites too, I think I may have to add that one. Plus, I always wanted to be one of the girls in the video.

Maister's classical reference would cause me to add Mozart's "Eine Kleine Naucht Musik"

I'm a huge music freak, so it would be next ti impossible for me to narrow my favorite songs into a top ten list. However (AIB Maister) I couldn't make a top ten classical list without mentioning Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique... foreboding grandeur at near it's best.

If it's any consolation, Bear, I had a Moussorgsky work 'Night on Bald Mountain' on my list originally, but it ended up getting elbowed out by another Russian composer - Rimsky Korsakov (of 'Bumblebee' fame and who incidently arranged most of Moussorgsky's works - including 'Pictures at an Exhibition')

I am terrible about top 10 lists. I don't even think I could come up with the Top 10 Indigo Girls songs, because i love almost all of them in their own special way. However, as I am listening to my All Time Ultimate Mellow Mix that I made of my favorite mellow songs, here's my favorite 10 off that (in no order)

China - Tori Amos
Come What May- Ewan MacGregor/Nicole Kidman
Thanks That Was Fun - BNL
When You Say Nothing At All - Alison Krauss
A Pirate Looks at Forty - Jimmy Buffet
Ghost - Indigo Girls
Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
Come Away With Me - Norah Jones
All of the Hard Days are Gone - Hair of the Dog
When you Dream - BNL

Wow, that's quite a playlist. There's either a disc jockey tearing his hair out, surrounded by CD's and their cases, or a couple of iPods plugged in, humming away.
Changes, as others have said, on a regular basis, but the ones I keep coming back to, or the ones that send chills down my spine, are:
Just Like Heaven--the Cure
Smokestack Lightnin'--Howlin' Wolf
Like Spinning Plates (live)--Radiohead
Blue Moon Revisited (Song for Elvis)--Cowboy Junkies
Roman Candle--Elliot Smith
Svefn g englar--Sigur Ros
Adagio--Albinoni (think it's the one in G minor)
Condor Pasa--Simon and Garfunkel
Car Thief--Beastie Boys
Isn't She Lovely--Stevie Wonder
In no particular order.

I love the song threads here. For what it is worth. Mix.

Patriot Game-Clancy Brothers
Spirit in the Night-Bruce Springsteen
Crazy Game of Poker-O.A.R.
Happy Hour--Housemartins
Dancing Nancies--Dave Matthews
Left of the Dial--Replacements
Jokerman--Bob Dylan
Anchored Down in Anchorage--Michelle Shocked
Goodrats--Dropkick Murphys

Top songs of my life

Each song represents a chapter or milestone in my life in chronological order. I'm in my mid thirties so I'm leaving 7 to 10 open for the future.

1. Seasons in the Sub - Terry Jacks. From Explosive Hits 74 - my first rock & roll album, and it still sends shivers down my spine.
2. Heros - David Bowie. I was so into DB's music as a pre-teen.
3. Slippery People - Talking Heads. I used to thrash the Stop Making Sense album.
4. Aloha Steve & Danno - Radio Birdman. My ode to the Detroit sound, Oz style.
5. You sexy thing - Hot Chocolate. "Full Monty" was released when I met my wife and this song summed up our union.
6. Have I told you lately that I love you? - Van Morrison. This is "our" song.

:b:

wow, for a planner's website, I thought I might see a nod toward's Desaparecidos' "Greater Omaha"!!!

I guess I would include a Magnetic Fields song, perhaps "Born on a Train"
Air's "Sexy Boy" -- I have always said that one is destined to be a classic. I imagine it being played at weddings or high school reunions or retro nights in the near future.
Pulp's "Common People"

Oh I better not get started, too many songs to list!

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

HA! Stairway to Heaven was out prom theme in high school - I especially like the appropriate lyric "...and there's a whino down the road...."

Ironically, the same prom's designated song was Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight which if you beleive the myth, is sung first person to a bystander that witnessed a drowning and did not render assistance.

...It all makes sense now... x|

(big sigh). Have been watching this poll for a couple weeks. As I said to TN, there was actually music before she was born. Much of which should be in any top-10 poll. It is hard for me to believe that anyone would make a top ten list of all time just on songs from the last few years, but I guess that can happen if you are 20-something.

This Bear believes that most of the tunes in any person's Top 10 will be greatly influenced by their age and the events that were happening to them. First love or first end-of-love seem to be the times when we grab onto a song and hold it close, sometimes with happytears, sometimes with sadness.

Bear In The Duct Work
Well, of course you're right. Anything that affects the duct work is a song you will always remember. Of course, that means that some of our "most remembered" songs maybe aren't of Top 10 quality, but pull the emotional strings.

Years ago I heard a guy on a talk show on the radio who would always guess correctly a person's age. People would call in and he would ask them their first name and their favorite song.

My guess is that technique is to use the first name to determine the decade and to use the song to determine when that person was about 18 years old.

It worked for him.
