Daily things 5️⃣ Three Things Thursday

1. My bookshelves are full again. Trying to decide which books to offload to make room for the new acquisitions. Don't really want to get rid of any planning books, even ones I read 20 years ago and haven't opened since. A loophole would be to take them to the office and add them to our community bookshelf. That way, technically, I still have access to them.

("Geography of Nowhere" and "Home From Nowhere.")

2. Working from home this morning due to a lab appointment. I am not a fan of working at home, but it's nice to have that option when needed.

3. We are heading to a smash room this weekend. Looking forward to breaking lots of things and having an epic tantrum.

3a: Bonus: Don't forget: next Thursday is Talk Like a Pirate Day. I expect to see all these 3TT's in PIrate.

Jim

1. I really haven't read much since having a heart attack. Hard to say why really.
2. The future and the past are always on a collision course that intersects with the present
3. When you think about it, that really doesn't mean a freakin' thing.

1) Moving offices shouldn't be scheduled for the same day as packet submittal.

2) I knew it would be a busy morning when I saw the ambulance at the entrance to our building (not there for our floor - whew!)

3) Meeting moved - have my Saturday afternoon back.

I hope the ambulance was only sent as a precaution for whatever it was sent out for.

Jim

1. Working on the back patio - Fall is in the air :D - since the youngest is currently playing his drums right outside my "office."
2. Clocking out early today to make up for night meeting a few days ago.
3. Do you really think we will support residential lots right across the street from the sewer treatment plant?

3. That is the "coming to the nuisance" doctrine in play! Just learned about that during my AICP studies a few weeks ago.

1. Happy with the America's Got Talent winner. The act did a great job, even if the first time that act was on, I thought to myself, "Good, but not good enough to win." There was one act that did not win that when I first saw, I said "Stop the show and give that act the million dollars right now."*

2. Today is the last home game for the Oakland A's before they move up the freeway to Sacramento. I don't really follow MLB, and haven't in decades, but since my first ever MLB game was in Oakland, and my butt filled the seat a lot in both Oakland's and Sacramento's baseball stadiums, that fact is worth mentioning here.

3. Wondering how many times between now and November I can use "Sorry, I can't--I really need to buckle down on studying for my AICP" as an excuse to get out of obligations.

* Awkwardly-phrased intentionally to avoid spoilers in case anyone here hasn't seen it.

Jim

1) Heading to the big city next door later today.

2) Have an after-hours public meeting tonight. I already know it's going to drag on because of who has stated they will be there.

3) Hubby's new job requires an actual commute on the highway. He hates driving in traffic.

1. Combos are tasty but you don't get very many of them in a bag.
2. Popcorn, on the other hand, is usually in ample supply when you buy a bag
3. I haven't bought popped popcorn in a bag in many many years. I prefer to pop my own, thank you.

I remember when I worked right next to a movie theater--used to go in there just for popcorn all the time. I'd bring a bucket for the whole office for $8. Seldom saw a movie there, though.

There is a reason I leave for work earlier than necessary. Not much traffic at 6:32 a.m. going my direction. (Going the other way, it's backed up . . .)

What's funny about Reno is that the traffic tends to go OUT of town in the morning, and back INTO town in the afternoon, due to the large employment center to the east (Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center) and all the commuters to state jobs in Carson City to the south. (Probably the most random location ever for a state capital, but I digress.)

My commute is from the rural canyon into downtown Reno (via downtown Sparks, which can be a bit of a backup), so it's not bad.

1) Met the Dev. Director in the neighboring community. Seems like a really good person and I think there will good 'regionalism' conversations in the future.
2) With my new house, I want to plant a courtyard garden. (need to find a new house with a space that could be a court yard garden.
3) I am giving a presentation tonight on Affordable Housing which is apparently a curse word with many of the locals.

1. Eric Adams is being indicted
2. Jumaane Williams is next in line to be Mayor. I like Jumaane.
3. Adams is first sitting NYC mayor to be brought up on charges, eat your heart out Montreal!

1. I am returning a couple of books to the library unread. As much as I feel guilty taking them back before I have even opened them, I realize it really doesn't matter. The library doesn't care (it helps their circulation figures), and other people in line behind me get to enjoy the book sooner. I just don't feel like diving into a 700-page brain surgery memoir right now. Maybe after the new year. I need to focus on filling in my knowledge gaps in the AICP world.

2. I got put in "Facebook Jail" over the weekend for "making terrorist threats." Apparently, they didn't like the fact that I said "the Tropicana will be getting blown up next week," a 100% factual statement. Oh well.

3. They are currently converting our neighborhood from propane to natural gas. I don't really care how our gas comes, but apparently many people are getting new ranges, water heaters, etc. as I see lots of brand new ones in the boxes strewn about waiting for install. Wifey has been wanting a new range anyway, so maybe this is our chance. If they wanted to replace our furnace (original to the house, 1997), we would not object.

Jim

1. Jane Austen. Yep. She was a person.
2. The annual big cross country tournament is going on across the street from us this weekend. We won't be able to back out of our driveway between 7:30 and 5:30 on Saturday. Fact.
3. Feel free to PM me, folks, if there's anything you want to talk about.

Re: 2:

Do you stage a car somewhere nearby in case you have to leave, or do you just plan around it?

My aunt and uncle live near a major tourist attraction (www.applehill.com) and just plan on not leaving their house on Fall weekend afternoons. Their house is along the main entry into the area.

Usually just plan around it. For several years I used to operate a parking concession at my house. A guy who had a largish RV used to call me in advance to make reservations the day before and was willing to pay $50/day to park in my driveway, which I was happy to do for the price.

1) I didn't sleep well last night, and am really struggling today.

2) Hmmm - takeout for dinner? I don't have anything thawed ready to cook.

3) A couple of the younger folk in the office complained about the bell sound on the door. So the boss man changed it. Now they think it's worse, but we're stuck with it. He won't change it back.

1. Out at 3:45 today to make up for a previous night meeting. Used some time yesterday, too.
2. Weekend in the fall mountains - heaven.
3. Mrs. STTG first full day as an RN on the floor - not even a text - should I be worried?

She's busy in a way that you'll never know.
Yep. Wifey and I have a "radio silence" policy when the other is at work. No texts/calls etc unless it's an emergency. "I can't find the remote" is not an emergency.

She gets off work at 2:30 pm, so I can text at 2:31 pm. I get off at 5:30 pm, so she can text at 5:31. (But tonight I am leaving a bit early since I have my Planning Commission meeting up in Virginia City at 6 p.m.)

Jim

1) This week I am reminded on how stressful buying, selling houses, inspections, and all the other variables associated with them can be.
2) I am so over this election cycle and I am not even in a battle ground state anymore.
3) The Town that I came from has hired my replacement. I am quite sure they have no idea what they are getting themselves into.

Of all the Doritos flavors, taco is my favorite.

I took a couple of days off. I'm driving to a lake today. The water level is low I want to see an abandoned bridge that is usually covered by water.

I'll be working out of town a lot for the next two months. I'm not thrilled, except that I found out a local resort honors GSA rates.

1. I don't like to work from home, but I did yesterday because the local gas company was supposed to switch us out from propane to natural gas. (The entire neighborhood is getting converted.) Stayed home, they did the other side of the street, but not us. I am NOT happy. Now I have to WFH again today. If you can't make it on the day people have set aside for you, and have rearranged their entire week to accommodate, please let them know BEFORE that day. Don't wait until 4 p.m. to say, "Oh, we can't get to you today."

2. Canucks lost their season opener last night. Oh well.

3. Got the COVID shot last night. Feeling a little out of sorts, but the aftereffects haven't hit me as hard as they usually do. Just a bit of a headache and sore arm.

JIm

1) Planning Commission presentation this afternoon.

2) Getting my COVID and flu shots tomorrow. :syringe:

3) No big plans for the weekend except for doing a seasonal closet changeover and getting some laundry done.

2) Getting my COVID and flu shots tomorrow. :syringe:
My policy is to not get the COVID shot on a Friday. That way, in case I am sick for a couple days afterward, it's during the work week, and I am not losing a weekend.

Whatever works for you though. I encourage everyone who is able to do so to get vax'd.

JIm

1. Last attempt at saving the family car tonight. Can't swing a replacement motor and hoping that someone will hit it and end its misery. The mechanic found out someone rolled back 65k miles on it recently too.

2. Glad it's getting cooler so I can run more.

3. Listened to too many paranormal podcasts and think the finance guy might be an alien...

I have a long weekend - off Monday - and no plans except for housekeeping stuff. So this works for me. Plus, I wanted to be sure I had it before my sister arrives at the end of the month.

1. Made cookie cake for Hubby's birthday.
2. Itty Bitty said if I ever wanted to change careers I could be a cake decorator.
3. I haven't slept well in a week. :(

1. My cousin said her prepper friend believes no matter who wins, their’s going to be unrest, "The clever see trouble coming and hide; the thoughtless go on and pay the penalty. . ." Proverbs 22:3
2. Having cash is super important if the ATM’s go down.
3. Does anyone remember the 30 tons of ammonium nitrate that went "missing" on that Palestine Ohio train? What if it didn't?

ah. We don’t get Columbus Day off because we get Halloween. Really!!!

1. This is the correct take. Much like "always $hit on company time"

2. Now that the C/O has been issued, moving this weekend. Won't be able to help out with our annual festival like normal but I'll do what I can.

3. Saturday's entertainment is an excellent Buffett tribute band, Sons of Sailors. That is followed by a drone show with 150 drones! Can't wait to see it.

Milo Ventimiglia Truth GIF by ABC Network

1. Too warm for mid-October.
2. Son safe in Florida (Daytona Beach area) - slept through most of the night.
3. PGA tournament this weekend with golfing the day before - mini trip with golf buddies.

1. We have a rare appearance of fog here in Reno. Doesn't happen too often--maybe once every couple of years--but I am used to driving in it, having grown up in California's Central Valley, where it is foggy more days than not between early December and late February.

2. Heading to the state conference in Vegas next week. This will be my second Nevada conference. As I recall from last year, it's a very low-key, informal affair, much like the state itself, and not at all like the highly-structured national conference.

3. Speaking of which, I will likely not be at the national conference in Denver next year. I gave my slot to a coworker in exchange for the use of her AICP study materials. I do plan to attend Detroit in 2026, though.

Jim

1. The weekend can't get here soon enough
2. This is the longest week I've experienced in some time
3. Looking forward to getting pumpkins and apples this weekend

1. Welcome rain and high in the 50s today.
2. Dinner tomorrow night at a German deli, followed by:
3. Iron Maiden with opener The Hu (Mongolian metal).

1) In the 50s this morning, might make it to 70 this afternoon. Nice!

2) Not much excitement right now. I don't like being bored.

3) I am ready for a nap!

1) Things are moving forward with the new house! Inspections highlighted a bunch of minor issues and we put a $$ on them and the seller agreed to cover that amount towards closing costs. Former house in NC should close on Monday!

2) I am going to grill hamburgers for dinner tonight. When I leave here, I need to pick up something for a side.

3) I am going to RJ at lunch tomorrow!

1. Tomorrow is a holiday, and is also the day the housekeeper comes. I will have to find out when she is coming so I can be out of the house when she's cleaning. I hate being home when she is cleaning--I don't like to be in her way.

2. A Christmas tree has already appeared on the sixth floor of City Hall. I am still a bit Grinchlike until at least mid-November.

3. At the state planning conference in Las Vegas this week, I went over to Fremont Street for that whole experience. It didn't get the memo about downtown pedestrian malls not being successful. Lots of people around, but the whole thing veers heavily toward the tacky side. I loved the show set to Katy Perry music, though.

Jim

1) Looks like I'll be working on some code amendments soon!

2) My sister arrives next week! Already have plans for the weekends - I don't have any vacay time during the week.

3) My eye is bothering me.

Did you have a buyer's realtor and go through the whole contract thing? I've heard a bunch of confusion from people locally about the process now. A few realtors refusing to show to non-represented buyers.

1. Our dog is a balm to Mrs. Maister's soul
2. 16 bean soup in the slow cooker right now. Looking forward to din din
3. Need a good accompaniment for bean soup

1. Weekend project to put away the patio which also involves cleaning out the shed.
2. Venison jerky my son brought me is tasty.
3. Contemplating flying to my parents over Thanksgiving - did it last year, too, solo.
