NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Weather Thread

Greetings from the Dirty Jersey where the temperature has been “mad brick” for over 10 days now. Last Sunday brought 8” snow and then an 1” of sleet which glazed everything with ice. It has been in the teens and twenties ever since. Monday, the state offices were closed. Tuesday, offices were on a 2 hour delay-it took me almost two hours to get to work.

We still have several days of below freezing temps and snow and ice are still piled everywhere. I live at the shore where the Toms River meets the Barnegat Bay. It has frozen over, took some photos this afternoon. I heard the ice boats were out in the morning so I’ll try and see them tomorrow morning.

Due to current weather conditions, NCDOT is unable to keep all roadways completely clear of snow. While additional trucks are available, some are not equipped with snowplows.
We are currently seeking a few more volunteers to assist in keeping road conditions safe and drivable

^^^that could be very true down east. Friends in New Bern had 12”-14”. We had 8”. Overnight low is projected 9 degrees.

It has been more than we week since the sleet and ice arrived... today I decided enough is enough is enough and parked in my usual parking space at the gym. No, it isn't the closest space, and is actually in the farthest row from the doors, but it is deep enough that I don't have to worry about someone hitting the front of my truck.

I try to park next to a pile of plowed snow for the same reason.

I was seeing forecasts of between 6" and 14" in the Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune area and most of the reports I've seen say they ended up with around 8"+. I was trying to find a news report that said what the record was for the area but was unable to. The only time it ever snowed in the roughly 4 years I was there (MLK weekend in 2000) we got about <2" on the base and things were shut down for most folks for two days. I remember watching the morning news each day and areas closer to the Triangle had about 6" with that storm and schools were closed for a week. That time around it stayed cold enough that stuff wasn't melting. It's already up around 40º at Lejeune today but looks like it will probably freeze some again overnight. After that though, it warms up pretty quickly. It sounds like they had their cold before the storm. The base is closed today except for essential personnel.

My nephew is stationed at the air station in San Diego and has to go to Cherry Point quite frequently. He was home on leave a week ago and was complaining that he picked the absolute coldest week to come back to Michigan. I got a text from him this past Friday that he had just landed there in Havelock, NC and the temps were in the single digits. I think he had about 2 days of San Diego weather between his trips to Michigan and NC. :rofl:

That's how I park at my gym too. Not so much to keep my Jeep out of the lanes of traffic but because in the 17 years I've been a member there, I don't think I've ever seen them plow their parking lot once. It's an absolute mess. What makes it worse is that since they don't plow, after a little bit of snow you cannot see the lines for the parking spots so half the people park all over the place, sometimes not even on the correct angle. It's not so bad early in the morning on a weekday but on Saturday and Sunday the place gets packed and if you don't get there early, good luck trying to find one of those makeshift spaces and then cars get blocked in and they cannot even leave.

We have a lot of very old members and I'm honestly surprised that nobody has fallen in the parking lot and broken a hip or something.
 
Ok... this is getting ridiculous. Yesterday it was warm (low 50's) and today was in the upper 40's. They called for significant rain, but we had a light sprinkling this morning.

What we still have is significant ice and slush on the neighborhood roads and many parking lots. Kids don't have school again tomorrow. Last day they were in school was January 23rd. To complicate things, this is the forecast for the rest of the week:

I will be surprised if they have school at all this week knowing that it will be below freezing the next couple of nights.
