NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Political Discussion Thread

Read a local article. We have this Child Fatality Report thing that comes out. I guess every year. They report to the state legislature what the biggest problem is and basic suggestions on how to fix it. The report concluded the majority of child deaths in our state come from firearms. Mostly suicide. Their 1st advice is to remove firearms from homes with children, especially is there is any kind of condition like depression that could lead to suicide. If that is not possible they recommend locking up the firearms. You know, common sense stuff. Our glorious legislature responds with how dare you attach people's 2nd amendment rights. I am sure they will try to remove the agency responsible for this offensive report that was required by the legislature in the first place.

Just saying my local crazy politics is just like your local crazy politics. Except Florida. We're not Florida.

As a firearm owner, boggles my mind that this is not standard law. Lock up all firearms. Common sense is not common in this case.

I want to say about a month or two ago, there was a child death in SoCal where the older kid got their father's gun from his center console of his truck and ended up shooting his younger sibling while his father was running a quick errand. I kid you not, but more than half the social media comments blamed the government for the shooting, stating that this would not have been a problem if the father was allowed to carry instead.

In other news, consideration is being given towards rescue aid and having it conditioned for democratic-leaning states. The great Alabama senator Tommy Tuberville has even gone as far as saying that California does not deserve the relief funding.

See pasted copy of letter to local weekly ..re Panama

Our new President elect and wannabe emperor has been rattling the saber about adjacent and nearby territories. His rants about US intervention in Panama are nothing new, however.

The nation of Panama’s very creation resulted from a big-stick intervention by that turn of the nineteenth century president, Teddy Roosevelt. His administration, along with a subservient media empire operated by Joseph Pulitzer and its “yellow journalism”, gave us the Spanish-American war and its global territorial grabs.

Those grabs stretched all the way from Cuba to the South Pacific. To make sure that the isthmus of Panama seceded from the Colombian nation Teddy sent the USS Wisconsin, a gunboat that carried a triple set of 14 inch cannon, to “protect future American business interests” there.

The liberal forces, those that championed Pan-American unity, that established the Organization of American States, stared down the barrels of those big guns and found little choice but to sign a treaty on board the Wisconsin.

Those liberal forces had drawn up what was called the Drago Doctrine. That was Latin America’s answer to the Monroe doctrine. The Drago Doctrine forbade European intervention in the Americas. The Panamanian secession ensured that American interests could proceed, albeit at gunpoint, with the canal’s building. The Wisconsin’s role in the war’s end and the canal’s completion gave birth to the term “gunboat diplomacy”, a practice still in operation.

Hmm, TR's administration began after the Spanish-American War, which lasted April - August 1898. McKinley was assassinated in 1901, which begat TR's administration.

This kind of stuff frustrates me to no end. One of the rules of responsible gun ownership is that they need to be properly secured so that unauthorized persons do not have access to them. Be it on a person, in a safe, or in a lock box. More so, there is no excuse. You can get lock boxes for $20 these days.

I don't have the references logged, do you? Remember the Maine!
Teddy was a Rough Rider, charged up San Juan Hill, and all that, during the Spanish-American War. He would be the only sitting president in our entire national history to lead troops in battle - if he had been president at the time. He wasn't. But he used the notoriety he gained during the war to edge his way into McKinley's VP slot so that when that fateful September 1901 day came in Buffalo NY TR would be No. 1 in line for the presidency.

Watching the confirmation hearings, I keep reminding myself that these highly unqualified people will be gone, much sooner than later, bathed in ignominy for all eternity.

I prefer not to think that they could take us all down with them.

That's why I am more than a little surprised that Marco Rubio is giving up his Senate seat for a position where he is subject to the whims of a petulant child. I give him a year at most before Trump fires him.

Let make sure I have this straight...

Vivek, who was born to both immigrant parents in the United States, is a US citizen due to birthright citizenship provisions wants to ban birthright citizenship.

Let that sink it.

Thanks.

My research was less diligent than it could be. The Panama secession was invested in by eight foreign nations, I read further. I don't think McKinley himself sent the Wisconsin down there, just the navy, but it's arrival cast a pall of doom over resistance to secession.

I think the claim of "gunboat" diplomacy origin still holds true. Colombian author Garcia Marquez' grandfather was a veteran of the Thousand Days war, and was the model for Colonel Aureliano Buendia and the colonel in "No one Writes to the Colonel".

In this war, as in many others, the US showed up with the biggest guns

Well...since more than 3/4 of IL population is located and a vast majority of state revenue generated north of I-80....

Sounds like Arizona. There is the state of Phoenix and I hear there are some other communities around.

I am sort of just sitting here at the office staring into space this morning. Musk did a literal heil hitler salute during the proceedings yesterday, on MLK Day no less. I mean we're supposed to just get up every day and do our little jobs now after what appears to be a full fledged ethonationalist authoritarian takeover has occurred? I can only imagine what the officer corps in the US military are thinking right now re: 'all enemies foreign and domestic'.

No change in egg or gas prices. Guess that's for Day 2.

You can buy it with either $Trump or $Melania coins.

Or if you are a business or foreign government, you can also use those to covertly dump a bunch of money directly into their bank account for unspecified benefits...

The new "Stargate" AI thing is interesting given that it is going to be in Texas... however his buddy Elon just opened and is now expanding "Colossus" the massive XAI computer in Memphis. The other element is these data centers that run the AI, are not massive employment generators like Trump claims.

Nope, definitely not employment generators. We just declared data centers are low traffic impact for our impact fees because, you know, they create no traffic.

They have lots of acreage and few jobs comparatively to other high-tech industrial users. They also don't need daily, weekly, monthly truck deliveries... honestly, they are a really unique use. We are going to see major impacts by them going in places they shouldn't be located.

I would imagine OH cities are not totally thrilled with their low-low-low local income generation ratio to significant consumption of potential high local income tax generating land.

High land, energy and water resource uses with the ability for substantial environmental impacts where they go. Given that Trump indicated that significant investment should be exempt from environmental review, this may not be ideal for the cities/counties that end up with these. The headlines sound great, but the fine print may be an entirely different outcome.

A former college friend of mine posted a "Sky is Falling" social media post in response to some of Tump's actions. I read through some comments in anticipation of posting something to boost her spirits until one post caught my eye. They stated:

"You are right, it sucks... but so what. What are you going to do to make this a better world? What are you going to do to teach your children kindness? What are you going to do to support your neighbors? What are you going to do to remember history? What are you going to do to preserve this country? If you let some $*@$% in the WH prevent you from being a good person, then yea, all hope is lost. But what you need to do is to show others that they too can do what is good and what is right, so kindness can spread."

What are your thoughts? Sure, renaming the gulf of Mexico is stupid. But does it matter? I am still going to call it golf of Mexico. I think that there will be a lot of these 'stupid' things, but at the end of the day, the community is the people who make it.

Yea... I didn't think this was going to go well with Musk...
