I hear $250 being tossed out as if it is millionaires. With inflation, I think it is very far from the millionaire lifestyle. It is without question upper middle class, but it is not millionaire status.

More so, with the average student loan debt being almost $38,000, a 10K reduction is going to help, but it is far from fixing the real issue.

OT, I wonder if the person who won 2 Billion Dollars in CA put in a request for the 10K reduction...

Not sure where you're going with your statement as the post did not reference anything about the "tool" just that seven college students were killed. Maybe funding to figure out why in the f$%& so many people are so angry they want to kill others. That's political. Perhaps a better way to manage access to firearms. That's political. Clearly that's your issue but the post did not reference that in any way whatsoever. Lots of things are political. Not just your particular hot button issue.

I always find it interesting when people bring up gun deaths that the quick response from those on the right whom care more about guns than safety - DON'T TALK ABOUT GUN REGULATIONS!!!

At this point, no one knows why those deaths occurred. I am sure we will find out more as the days pass, but what I can be certain of is that guns killed those people. Sure someone shot those guns, but I think we can all agree based on the reports that it was a gun. Note It looks like a knife was used in the Idaho murders. I take back my comments on that particular mass murder event.

I am also continually confused at why anyone thinks we aren't talking about mental health? Did you know that there are republican groups that are in school districts right now trying to stop Social Emotional Learning (SEL)? You know why? Because it trains out kids to be gay. I mean it doesn't, but that is what they are pushing. Not that our kids need things like SEL more and more because of the environments that we allow to occur in schools or because of these kids home lives.

We talk a lot about mental health. The system isn't robust, and needs money to support additional avenues for people who need them. But let's not pretend like the kid who needed mental health just started slapping people to death. He bought a gun. He took that gun and killed people. I think it is a fair question to ask, "How did he get the gun?" "Should he have been able to get that gun?" "Should we make it harder to get guns so he couldn't have gotten a gun?"

Valid discussions are not possible because one side cares more about what some old dead guys who had no vision for what the United States is today, said that they thought we should be able to protect ourselves from an oppressive government that they thought we could rise up against. Makes sense.

You got me. I guess I could have been making a statement about how dangerous liberal colleges are, but my main point is how quickly we're all going to move on from this. I should have that I added that I think this is a policy failure and I'm tired of political inaction.

I dont know how or why the students in Idaho were killed, but I don't know that anyone would take a bet that they weren't killed with a gun. That's because 92% of homicides for ages 15-24 are by gun. Its like the third leading cause of death after car accidents and accidental poisonings. In the past I've found some of your suggestions on the topic fairly reasonable. I think there need to be more, but I'd be happy with any real progress. I agree with you completely we need to talk about mental health, but we all know that one party is going to do almost anything they can to make sure there are not limitations to gun ownership. There are efforts to remove any limits to ownership or permitting of firearms. Do you really think conservatives are going to allow Drs to prevent people from owning a gun. In my state the legislature is doing everything it can to reduce cities ability to regulate weapons. Do you think whenever the Supreme Court decides to strike down the concealed carry laws in major northern cities, those places will become safer. I don't.

I'm not anti-gun. I guess I'm pro-life. I sold guns in college for a chain store. I own a gun. It's more of an heirloom than anything else. It was my grandfather's and he was an avid hunter who killed something a few times a week for my grandmother to cook. I'd get rid of it tomorrow if it helped stop the insanity.

I agree that guns are objects that are neither good nor bad. I just think that we as a whole haven't shown that we're capable of using modern guns responsibly. I don't think they should be outlawed, but they should be tightly controlled or regulated. I know too many people that shouldn't have a gun. They are have true mental health issues, have fits of rage or depression, or sometimes just drink too much and do stupid things. A gun in a trained and responsible person's hand may provide them protection, but more guns in general make us all less safe.

Sorry for rambling. Mods, if you'd like feel free to move this into the thread @gtpeach wrote. If I'd seen it I would have posted there. Or maybe we can start a Neverending Mass/School Shooting thread (sorry just feeling a bit dark.)

Step 2: Begin war on drugs
Step 3: Add funding and encourage for profit prisons

Mental health is certainly an issue, and there are some lasting legacies from past decisions. Our gun culture obsession is another that also has had some lasting legacies.

So yea, Trump is in. His speech was very low key for him. I mean it was lots of crazy talk without any facts, and lots of misinformation, which is normal. But it wasn't high energy, we are going to change the world, like he seems to like to do.

Now we wait for DeSantis.

Can't see Biden getting the nod but I also thought Clinton would trounce Trump. Can't see Trump, either. If he runs as an independent, it will be a DEM in the WH as his running will take away REP votes.

Side note, a coworker thinks that Nancy is going to announce that she will challenge Biden for the nomination. She too is a HELL NO for me.

There are options for both parties to try and move forward with some younger leaders. They would be smart to try it.
 
Lots of chatter since February 2021, and its still going on, about about who the dems might cough up for a presidential nominee in 2024... I have to admit, I struggle to understand this line of thought... wouldn't Biden run in 2024?

It's pretty obvious that Biden is not always "with it". Now how much that really impacts his ability to govern is debatable but it's out there and plenty of folks on both sides of the aisle see it. And I think this is the most important point if you're a Democrat and want to keep one as POTUS: if you're depending on the youth vote (and it sure seems like they are if the mid-terms are any indication) you're probably going to get a more enthused electorate if the candidate is not as old or older than most of their grandparents.

I think you might see Larry Hogan, outgoing governor of Maryland throw his hat in the ring. I like him. You don't get re-elected in MD as a Republican governor is you're not reaching across the aisle and showing a lot of practicality and common sense. He rejected Trump a long, long time ago. Heck, he even openly opposed the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Maryland's election last week. He didn't endorse the Democrat but he was not in favor of the other guy and made it known.
