Kansas governor calls for education leader to resign over ‘raiding’ remark

the offending comment

He joked about how cousins from California used to visit him in Kansas during the summer and were “petrified” of tornadoes.

“They’re like, ‘Are we going to get killed by a tornado?’” Watson said.
“And I’d say, ‘Don’t worry about that, but you got to worry about the Indians raiding the town at any time.’”

“And I’d say, ‘Don’t worry about that, but you got to worry about the Indians raiding the town at any time.’”
Which part offended them:
the description of the "raiding", or calling them "Indians" when it should be "Native Americans"?

Biden's polling numbers do not look awesome. Second worse (only Trump's were worse) going into the first TSOTU.

There are a lot of things about Biden that I don't like. One thing that I do like is how he has handled the situation with Ukraine thus far. However I am going to be curious how he handles it once (not if) we need to engage. I think that will be a test of his leadership and I think if he does it well, his polling number will skyrocket.

No. They won't. If you were Candidate X and I voted for Candidate Y then I won't like you and I can't like you in any way, shape or form. It's not allowed. That's where we are now as a country. It's completely insane. This is not a new thought but it's so true: We're the most entertained and yet least informed society in our country's history. Most of the people (on both sides) who rail about whatever have no real idea of what the f&$k they're talking about because they've formed their opinion based on FaceBook, a 30 second clip of some talking head or what their friend says.

My philosophy at this point is to treat people with decency and compassion and try to do what I think is best for my community in my decision making capacity. And while I've always planned for the future in my personal life I'm definitely trying to have as much fun as I can right now because I'm fairly convinced at some point it's all really going to go into the shitter. So at least I'll have some pleasant memories.

They have no idea what they are doing, but history has told us that when people can rally around a common enemy, it unifies otherwise divided people. Both my conservative and liberal friends are all pissed about Russia invading Ukraine. It seems like it is the first common ground in years.

The Deplorable Sisters, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene, heckled President Biden throughout the speech.

I find the SOTU to be pointless generally. With that said, I miss the days where we actually had decorum and didn't have to scream over people to get attention. That was nice.

Ps. I don't think Nancy Pelosi ripping up a speech was good either.

Something like this should never happen and is an embarrassment to the institution.

I am curious what others thought of the speech.

Quickly, over all it was decent IMHO. It certainly hits the points, wasn't overly biased/was fairly moderate.

Said things that Rs HAD to applaud. A few farther left Ds said it didn't go far enough, which is a good thing, again IMHO.

Was sorry to see he said Iranians instead Ukrainians. Did say no troops except on NATO soil. He did not mention tRump or Jan 6th, but he did reference in other words ("former administration" & "gathered in a sacred space—the citadel of our democracy."). Emphasized that trickle-down economics don't work. Bipartisan efforts to pass infrastructure bill (given some credit even though many Rs didn't vote for it). Glad he mentioned prescription drug price issues.

Like any other SOTU, lots of promises so we shall see.

I've read fact checks on both CNN & Faux too.

I did not watch, but I did read the CNN fact check. I don't bother checking the Fox News site for political related news.

There were some things that I agreed with, some things I didn't agree with when it comes to policy views.

I did find the comments regarding gun control fascinating and wrong. Even CNN said that his statements were untrue. I was surprised that he said that gun companies were essentially except from lawsuits given the settlement that Remington just paid. Despite his desires, he does not have the votes for the national support to do what he wants when it comes to banning what he calls assault weapons.

I thought the element on heath care was very interesting, but I wish he would have included a lot more support for funding and simplify of preventative health care. For example, you can buy a standard glucose monitor on amazon without a problem. But if you wanted a continuous glucose monitor, you need a prescription, even if you will be paying cash. Why is one prescription only and the other is open market, especially given that the one that is open market requires a very small blood draw and the other does not.

State is passing some new gun regulations. The winners are:
1. No taxes on guns, ammo, or safes.
2. Allow guns on school campuses - I would have to read the details on this one
3. Cities can't enter into contracts with companies that discriminate against guns.

I don't know about you, but I routinely use racial slurs against Glocks, but I'm okay with Colt. WTF Arizona.

So the AZ leg. is cool with everyone packing. Good to know. :daydream:

^^^That's all you got from it? Boo on gun control & wanted more on health/drug issues?

Well, he didn't say much else.

He preached job creation. Yes, there were new jobs created. The question that I have with all of the speeches that include this is what kind of jobs are they? Minimum wage or something better?

COVID. Let's face it, this is out of his control and the CDC keeps changing the goal line in all directions. I think he did the right thing by leaving the regulations up to the individual states instead of going national.

Economic Growth - Yes, it grew. Once again I have have spoken about this before. The Fed-Reserve is printing money at an alarming rate. Next year is going to be a different picture now that the inflation is coming to bite us in the ass.

Ukraine - I agree with the position, although I do think it is misleading that he says that we have given them over a billion dollars. Almost all of that came before Russia invaded. Since then Richard Childress has done more with sending them 1 Million rounds of ammunition.

Guns we talked about...

Inflation - the measurement of inflation leaves out important things... like food and energy.

SCOTUS Nominee - I don't know enough about her to form an opinion yet.

Climate - It is all talk. None of the past presents have actually done much about this. Nixion was the last truly green president that we had.

Federal Officers and Use of Force - I don't think this addresses the concern and is just lip service.

Taxes - I am going to call BS on his comment. We will end up paying more in taxes.

Fortune 500 Companies - Umm, ok. Flip side is what happens to those jobs when these companies move out of the US. There is a better way to handle it.

Electric Car Charging Stations - "His Administration" - No they won't. It will be private companies, developers, or local municipalities.

Health Care Savings - We have heard this before on how the "Government" will make health insurance more affordable. How has that worked out so far.

For what it's worth - Madison Cawthorn (R-NC Asheville area) stated last Saturday in a town hall meeting in Asheville that Ukrainian President Zelensky is a "thug" and the Ukrainian government is corrupt and pushes "woke ideology"

^^^put him in a tshirt, puffer vest, sweatpants & a cap & he fits right in.
[OT] I have bob-tailed in a cabover (driving the tractor without the trailer) and I can tell you it is an unsettling experience. You can hit some bumps in the road that will make an experienced driver worry that he's going to tip the cab forward onto the asphalt. I'll bet ol' Ted was sitting a few inches higher in his seat when he climbed down outta that bad boy Pete.[/OT]

I saw an article about how one of the truckers was upset because everyone was flipping the truckers the bird. As a veteran of the DC beltway I can tell you it's painful on a good day. Factor in a convoy of trucks holding up traffic and I can see why people would be telling you to eff off. I don't understand how jamming up the thousands of working people trying to get to their job or home is "straightening out" Washington.

Yet everyone was livid and saying protesters should be run over when it was people of color protesting being killed by cops.

These truckers look particularly ridiculous given that they are sharing the news cycle with real patriots fighting for real freedom from an oppressive fascist dictator.

My FIL is a retired trucker. His comment was that these guys are obviously not very good at their jobs in that they failed to pick up loads on their way to DC. He checked one of the load databases used by owner-operators that had an integrated map and just shook his dead, mumbling "dumbasses."

Robert Regan, Michigan GOP state House candidate

for what he has said - look it up.

Teen Vogue, marketed for girls age 12-17, wrote about it, so their very short op-ed
is probably SFW:
Michigan state house candidate Robert “R.J.” Regan told a public online forum, “I tell my daughters, ‘Well, if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it.’”
And this isn’t his only brush with notoriety, let alone his only one involving his poor daughters. In 2020, during Regan’s last campaign, they both begged voters not to vote for him. (I can’t imagine why.)

There was an abundance of political figures who came out to praise and edify Jussie Smollett and use it as an example of hate in American and intolerance when he was 'attacked.' However they are all silent on his conviction.

Here are my thoughts, yes, there is hatred out there. Zero question about it. But when someone orchestrates their own attack, it completely works against the problem that the majority of society want to solve. He actually conducted a premeditated attack against himself. If those actions were upon anyone else, it is a hate crime. I still do not understand why he did what he did and he was defiant right up until he was escorted out of the courtroom after receiving a senses of 30 months in prison.

So in the 2024 election, when you have a Republican State legislature not send electors of the candidate with the most votes, will that be the end of the country? Open civil war breaks out soon after?

Zelensky has an uphill battle even after he hopefully survives Putin and Russia. Ukraine is historically one of the most corrupt countries on earth. That's a very big reason NATO isn't in a hurry to admit them.

Is that what the people in your state are predicting? There seems to be an opinion of the majority in my Tri-State region that this won't happen.

But if the people here were faced head-on with the worst case scenario, guns and an all-out civil war, they'd almost certainly take a stop-gap measure: negotiate a "national divorce" between the red & blue states. something a little like what Marjorie T.G. floats around from time to time.

The Republicans can't field someone who will win more votes anymore. They get crushed so badly in NY and California it's nearly impossible. They rely on the electoral college and even now they are plotting.

My state is solid red now. Regressive as hell.

I'm enjoying watching our local state reps struggle. The Rs passed some voting bill that back fired. It does something about appointing precinct members instead of electing them or some procedural garbage I don't care enough to understand. Now the base is angry and the Ds are just shrugging their shoulders and asking why they should be in a hurry to fix this when it was the rush to approve it that created the problem.

I don't think this comes as a surprise to anyone:

However, do you think it is fair those non-transgender women who competed? If so, why? If not, what do you think should be done moving forward?

I think I know the answer, but help me out anyways. Why is this a political issue?

I think I know the answer, but help me out anyways. Why is this a political issue?

It isn't.

However, since I don't worship at the alter of Biden, if I bring something like this up, someone is automatically going assume I am a card carrying republic and just pushing a Fox News agenda. So I save myself the grief of having to justify having it as an independent post to those who are too short sighted to realize that questions of this nature don't automatically corollate to a political viewpoint.

Does anybody really worship at the alter of Biden? Most people I know who are democrats don't love him. Most of the republicans I know think he's an idiot or the anti-Christ. Everyone else is just generally glad he's boring and it's not the other guy in charge.
I fall into the last category you listed. But people flipped the hell out when I said I didn't vote for him, because they automatically assume I voted for Trump, which I didn't.
