A vote for Hillary is a vote for Trump too. He won't beat Clinton. I'll either write in Sanders, or I'll vote for Gary Johnson or Bloomberg.

off the national politics for a minute for this Kansas craziness. I seriously thought about putting it in the odd news thread.

As you may or may not know Kansas has some issues. We keep cutting all the taxes and wondering why we come up short. So we end up cutting funding elsewhere like schools. Over the last two years the legislature and governor have tried to alter the school funding formula. Everytime the law is declared unconstitutional (Kansas, not the big one) by the judicial branch. Last year we had a bill that bascially said we'll cut judicial funding if you don't find this formula okay. The judges had no problem saying no. This year we're trying a different approach. We're finding new reasons to impeach our judges like these gems:

“attempting to subvert fundamental laws and introduce arbitrary power,” “attempting to usurp the power of the legislative or executive branch” as well as action viewed as wanton, reckless or discourteous.

If you want some interesting, relevant reading, go back and look at the ascent & Presidency of Andrew Jackson. Trump is not the first time we've seen an overbearing personality overthrow a party. Andrew Jackson transformed American politics and in many ways invented the "running as an outsider" technique. The Democratic establishment (party of Jefferson) was horrified.

Jackson was a successful lawyer and judge known as being hot headed, vulgar and impulsive. He had minimal experience in government. He was an unapologetic bigot. He hated science. He was extremely nationalistic & resented immigration. He carried extremely authoritarian attitudes to the point he essentially blew off the Supreme Court. He consolidated executive power in manners inconsistent with the Constitution. And he got himself elected in a populist wave despite the opposition of his party's establishment.

Have you ever read Thomas Frank's What's the Matter with Kansas?. It's not really entirely Kansas-specific but gives a good overview of how things got the way they did in places like that. The book is over 10 years old and with all the strangeness in the ensuing decade, I often wish that Frank would put out an updated version.

I thought the last Dem. debate was pretty good. Bernie showed a little fight in him when HRC kept trying to interrupt. Both of them show the GOP how a debate should be done. I missed the Town Hall last night though, should have watched that one. HRC's proposal for Flint (eliminating anything lead related in 5 years) is simply not feasible. I really loved the fracking answers. Bernie flatly said "no" when asked if fracking should be allowed, and went on to state plainly that Democratic leaders who think it's okay are wrong.

There debate about the auto-bailout was interesting. It's been proven the bailout helped save around 1.2 to 1.5 million jobs, but I haven't seen any studies to show where geographically the jobs were saved.

It was pretty boring. Bernie likes to attack Clinton and interrupt her. I am not sure it is helping him.

Clinton likes to ignore facts. That isn't helping her.
 
A Bernie Sanders fan just sent me an article on how Hillary Clinton paid herself a salary of $250,000 using campaign funds. :-@



While it is not illegal, I still find it wrong.

Kasich got 3rd in Michigan.

Cruz is the likely competitor to Trump, but he will probably sink the R's faster than Trump, so now the R's have to consider what they really want - to win or to have "conservative values".

Bernie still is getting crushed in delegate counts and even though he won Michigan still fell further behind Clinton yesterday with her winning by a huge margin Mississippi. Ohio could be interesting for Bernie. If he gets Florida or Missouri or Ohio, or all three, he could start to push Clinton superdelegates. Honestly though, I don't see many scenarios where Bernie has a shot to beat Clinton. It is fun to watch though.

I agree with your assessment of Clinton/Sanders, and I think that if it comes down to Tump v Clinton, there will be a lot of Sanders supporters who will vote Trump and he will win. I just hope that it will be enough of a wakeup call to the political establishment that things need to change. Having said that, I still think that Trump will be a horrible president.
 
I'm surprised by the Sanders win here in Michigan. I know most reliable polls showed him closing the gap over the past week or so, but I hadn't seen a single poll that had him in the lead. I wonder how much of it was due to Michigan's open primary system and Clinton-supporters crossing over to the Republican ticket because they figured a Clinton win was a foregone conclusion and/or they really wanted to vote against a particular R candidate.

FWIW though, I have seen many Sanders lawns signs in my area but not a single Clinton one.

He spent a lot of money here and that article doesn't reflect the past week. Usually I have door hangers from all the candidates during the election week, and this time it was only his.

Interestingly, several polling places ran out of D ballots. Flint, surprise! Also at least one site near me.

(For those following along at home, our :mi: primary is open, meaning you walk in, fill out the voter application form, and request a ballot for the party you're claiming to be a member of that day. It Is Rumored that some voters switch and vote for the most unelectable choice.)

No rumor indeed. I''ll freely and happily cop to doing exactly this on many occasions. Not yesterday though. I switched from my typical party and voted for the candidate that I saw as least despicable.

I know several people who did that in the last election since Hillary was not on the primary ballot. I would be surprised that either party would do that in this case because it is still up in the air.


A clerk friend of mine in MI said that there was higher than average turnout in her City, so the running out does not surprise me too much.

I used to do that but stopped doing so a few years ago. The way I see it is having the best candidates on both sides is important for a good democracy.
 
Well, things just got weird in regards to the Oregon Standoff shooting. A buddy posted a link to the video that was taken from inside the truck and now some of the FBI agents is under investigation for misconduct. I did not watch all of the video, but it is all very weird the way it went down before he got out of the truck.

The simple fact is the guy did not listen to the agents and moved his hand towards a loaded gun in his pocket. It is evident in the helicopter video. I believe that the officers had to do what they did to protect themselves.

So Bernie and Clinton took out the knives last night. Geez. Who do they think they are the Republicans?

I think Bernie probably came out on top? It was probably a throw up honestly. Bernie hit Clinton a lot on her immigration stances. Which seems like he has the upper hand on.

Ohio should be interesting for Bernie. He needs Ohio or Florida. If he doesn't get one or both, be probably should give up.

This is why Kasich stayed in, to take Ohio and leave Cruz/Rubio out in the cold.
 
We have early voting and the grounds are covered in campaign signs at the entrance to the municipal center. Every day they have to put out new signs because we have witnessed at least 3 people take them and crinkle them up and stuff them in the gutter.



I am so fed up with the system, that I might not vote in the presidential primary.

Irony: the populist perspective of democrats hates the super-delegate system, while the GOP would probably kill to have a super-delegate system to deal with Trump.

Barbara Boxer is bought and paid for also.....lame. She wants to accept a 6% tax on the 2.1 Trillion held outside the USA. Plus she suggests we support Hillary because she is a woman.
 
The R debate now seems like the D debate. Boring.

Trump won, mainly because no one got him on anything big. He still says nothing, but it seems Rubio and Cruz have given up the direct attack campaign. If they keep attacking the fact that he isn't conservative or that he has no plans they are going to lose. It doesn't seem like people care about either of those things.

Kasich wasn't effective mainly because the others weren't being ugly. Kasich only looks good when he is the adult in the room. Trump wasn't being a child and therefore Kasich gets ignored.

I think Trump gets Florida by 5-10 points. I think Kasich gets Ohio by 2-5 points.

I think Rubio drops out on Tuesday night. Kasich will drop out later in the week.

Trump is the nominee. Which is I guess a good thing if the only other option is crazy Cruz. The R's should be pleased with Trump over Cruz. At least they will have a shot at winning.

I watched about 10 minutes of it last night and from what I was able to see, I agree. The thing that I can not wrap my head around is what does this say about the society that we live in if the person leading the GOP delegate count is not willing to give specific answers on policy questions.

Because we as a people don't want specifics. We like soundbites and what we can learn in 140 character messages. We're the most entertained and yet least informed population in history. We don't have time to learn about the nuances of issues when The Real Housewives of New York is coming on in 10 minutes!

So southwest Ohio is getting a TON of attention this year. Not only because Ohio matters so much for both the R's and D's, but because we are also filling my congressional seat... you know the one that John Boehner used to hold. So we also have TONS of special interest and SuperPAC money on our airwaves making sure we know who is a government shill, and who outsources jobs to China. We also have lots of the same phone messages for each candidate saying the exact same thing - "You want an outsider, who loves guns and religion! You want someone who will get rid of Obamacare and who will create millions of jobs while lowering your taxes and making your children smile. Well then, you want *Insert candidates name*."

Also at the Dayton Airport for a Trump rally this weekend some guy tried to get on the stage. That has been all over the news. Stupid people. I guess the SS got him pretty good though. I would have liked to see those ninjas in action...

When I read the comments sections found at the bottom of most online political articles it seems like Trump attracts....apologists more than supporters.

Actually, I'm on the edge of the Cleveland/Akron MSA, so we're really just trying to get as many of our hotels rooms filled as possible and get those accompanying the delegates to come visit our downtown and spend, spend, spend.

I firmly believe that every single news outfit in the world will have reps in Cleveland for the RNC.

It's going to be interesting.
 
WTF! Wife and I voted after a parent teacher meeting today, and the poll workers almost seemed to be moving as slow as they possibly could. There is being detailed then there is being stupid. My person had me spell my full name 4 times. I have a VERY common name. Then I had to tell her my desired ballot 3 times. It wasn't just me but every person in that line. It made me wish I had a last name that was at the end of the alphabet. That line was moving!

I'm lucky, for voting I just go to the office next to mine, say hi to the clerk and they set me up to vote. Yes I still have to show my ID even though they know me.

I would have thought that, but it was that way with everyone who's last name started with A to K... and there were some serious Bernie supporters in my line too. One was talking about how her kids are going to go to college for free after Sanders is elected.
