So who else out there says the Pledge of Allegiance with their kids after their bedtime prayers?
I have never been a "flagist" and while I don't knock anyone's faith I don't follow any teaching, unless we include Buddha's first realization upon standing up from the immovable spot at the base of that tree. "This cannot be taught."

Funny, I belong to a local garden club that works well together with local mayor and council on projects that beautify a formerly decrepit downtown. Club treasurer is an East German physicist that operates a bakery. He always comes a little late to meetings so that he does not have to endure the club's opening prayer and flag pledge.

The Alabama Supreme Court opinion that embryos are children is the most blatant signpost that this nation is being consumed by white christian nationalists and it scares the crap out of me. These people won't tell you how to live your life - they'll use the levers of government to force you to live the way they want you to live. I feel bad for the women of this country - your future is truly bleak if they get their way.

It was in reference of Lara tRump's speech at CPAC & her families "bedtime routine."

That one caught a lot of people down here flat-footed. Its wild to see some of the discussions between conservatives about whether there should be exceptions for IVF or not. I guess people had never considered what holding the line at fertilization meant for IVF. Most of the clinics have ceased operations for the time being and few people have said their eggs and embryos are stuck. (Which raises the question of whether these embryos are being unlawfully imprisoned.) The legislature is going to rush through a bill that says that until they are within a implanted in a woman's body they are unviable.

Tommy TWOTONE Tubberville first said he was glad it passed, then after it was explained to him said, people should have access.

Honest question - does Biden possess the mental faculties to remain as president? Not looking for a "better than Trump" argument. Just a straight answer, yes or no, to the question. As an independent, I do not think so.

I am OK with Joe, despite his heavy cartload of baggage. Remember he shepherded Clarence Thomas to his execrable seat, and remember Delaware is the Cayman Island type refuge for credit card companies and their 25+ per cent interest rates.

Now the great state of Aladamnbama needs to rule on the status of that twinkle in Daddy's eye. Is that not also an extra uterine being.

No I don't. And I think it's the reason a lot of D's are just going to sit this election out. The Democratic party has done this to themselves and it could have been avoided.

I think he does and I feel that he surrounds himself with people who are generally qualified and competent. All that being said, I also think he's too damn old, and much of Congress is in that same boat.

I have basically come to accept that we likely will not have a President from my generation, which is pretty on brand for Gen X. In most aspects of our life, the Boomers and Silents have screwed us and we just keep our heads down and do our work and live our lives. Same as it ever was.

I have to say Joe is too old. I think he's still mentally with it, but he's slowing down. I wish I had someone else to vote for or something to get excited for instead of my choice of old man or old man dictator.

I think that Nikki Haley is only staying in the election in hopes that enough states rule that Trump will not be on the ballot and the GOP has no choice but her.

Having said that, do you think if it was a Haley v Biden election that she would win?

Jack Posobiec at CPAC
“Welcome to the end of democracy. We are here to overthrow it completely,”
“We didn’t get all the way there on January 6, but we will endeavor to get rid of it and replace it with this, right here,”

Is that scary ?

Also staying in because of potential convictions (or not). Haley vs. tRump (write in) vs. Biden? The 2 R's would cancel each other.

A Biden v Haley general would definitely be interesting. She'd have a good chance, especially since many independents are likely to vote for Biden as an anti-trump vote, but removing Trump from the equation changes that calculus. Additionally, the folks who have issues with Biden's age would still pull that lever for him rather Trump, but might consider pulling for Haley.

I am not a fan of her, but I don't like either of the 2 likely candidates, either. I am very disappointed that she has said she would pardon Trump. He must be held accountable, both at the ballot box and in court. He committed serious crimes, he should be held to account.

Here in SC we had the Republican primary on Saturday. The Democratic one was a few weeks ago. Why they are separate I have no idea. Anywho, here in SC you don't register a political affiliation, you just register to vote. Then at primary time you just tell them which ballot you want (when they're on the same day) or just go to the one you're interested in other times. In my part of the state it was pretty obvious from looking at precinct numbers that a good number of Democratic leaning voters went on Saturday and voted for Haley. It didn't matter overall in the state but I still found it interesting.

Agreed. I think the scary thing is that there are way too many people that are too old trying to run things. Trump rambles nonsense. Mitch has literally frozen in place. Our world of identity politics and maintaining incumbents to keep the R or D has resulted in an unusually older crowd in charge.

I had to come into the office building for a bit this afternoon. It’s presidential primary day here in the Great Lake State and my route took my past the county GOP HQ. I did enjoy seeing some protesters outside the HQ with signs showing Trump behind bars as I drove past a bit ago.

Fun fact: three of the four protesters looked like Bernie Sanders. Three of the four protesters were also women.

Closer to the office, I made my way through a busy intersection that usually has at least one panhandling tweaker on each corner. The weather is unseasonably beautiful today so I had the windows down and was treated to somebody yelling out "End the War!" and "Kick out the Biden Crime Family!" and look over and see one of the usual meth heads marching up and down the sidewalk holding a "VOTE MAGA TODAY" sign.

I don't remember ever seeing this much activity around a presidential primary here. Maybe the nice weather is bringing out all the fanatics.

The tragic murder of a student by an illegal immigrant here in GA has been jumped on and made a spectacle by ruthless politicians. Was going to write letter to paper but am too disgusted by the hysteria to join it.

GOP wants to make this fellow Biden's Willie Horton.

They would like to put the alleged killer's head on a stake at the edge of town.

Top 3 from this afternoon:

1 - tRump offers $110m bond instead of required $348m bond.
2 - Boebert's 18yo son Tyler arrested on vehicle theft just hours after she accused the Biden Crime Family of something
3 - Bitch McConnell stepping down @ end of year.

I'm shocked I'm actually going to think this, but I can see how Moscow Mitch departing the leadership role at the end of this year just means more MAGA in the Senate.
And that is indeed a truly terrible thing.

The liberal hand wringing about the Supreme Court oral arguments in April about absolute presidential immunity/monarchy and the resulting schedule for rendering a decision as it relates to the November election this year… I haven’t seen anything in the media yet about how that would play out when the GOP/MAGA nominating convention is held later this summer. It seems like if the convention has the backdrop of a Supreme Court decision hanging out there will most certainly set the tone during the convention. The convention organizers will have their hands full with messaging, especially since the mainstream media - ABC, CBS, and NBC - will likely be broadcasting it without fealty. It will be interesting if non-MAGA candidates like Haley, Hutchinson, and Christie would have a role. Doubtful. Like, then would the GOP/MAGA focus on primetime speakers like Tim Scott, Mace, Gaetz, MTG, Boebert, Stefanik, Scott Baio, Clint Eastwood, and the Alabama Supreme Court at their convention? I can’t imagine how that convention happens without any controversy or sudden self-inflicted political calamity.

Maybe the MAGA elite will try to cancel any convention to save money.

Heard on the local news this morning that Gov. Greg Abbott is on the shortlist to be Trump's running mate.

Anyone else worried about that possibility?

I really wanted to make a short list joke about him being in a wheelchair, but decided against it. I'm generally not one to make fun of the handicapped, even if they are objectively awful human beings.

The president can only pardon federal crimes, not state crimes. And once in office she might back away from that; why give him a platform to challenger her in the future? She's probably hope for an opportunity pardon him posthumously.

Looks like Haley pulled a surprise upset and won the Washington DC primary. Which concerns me a little, as I suspect she would mop the floors with Biden in a general election. Hell, Trump may be the ONLY candidate Biden can beat.

I think you're wrong. There are a LOT of D's who are simply fed up with Biden and the administration's pandering to certain elements of the party, lack of any real leadership on other issues and are probably going to sit this one out. Running Biden again is a huge mistake. As was making Harris VP in the first place. The Democratic party is in just as much flux and shambles as the Republican party, just in different ways.

I disagree that running someone who enjoys all the advantages of incumbency is a 'huge mistake' towards winning an election. The historical record supports this.

This didn't surprise me, but what did was that it was a unanimous decision by SCOTUS.
I wasn't surprised... the line of questioning was very clearly pointing that direction, as they didn't delve into a line of questioning about the specifics of whether he violated the 14th and stayed firmly in the implications of state-by-state qualification under a national metric. "Feels very national" was the key comment I heard in their arguments/questioning that told me where I thought it might land.

In theory, I'm surprised that they would limit a state's right to determine who they chose for presidential candidates. In reality, I think justices are worried that a battleground state like Michigan, NC, Ohio, or GA could have a partisan governor, legislature, secretary of state decide that the other part is guilty of a treason and kick a competitive candidate off the ballot. It's probably safest not open that door.

I remember when state's rights was a conservative stand.

If states cannot control their ballot then how can they have the standing to certify federal elections?

Does a senator or congressman work for the state?

Trump CFO Pleads Guilty to Perjury After Habba Scolds Engoron for Accusing Him of Perjury

Less than a month after Trump's lawyer Alina Habba sent Judge Arthur Engoron a scathing letter after he dared to suggest Trump's CFO Allen Weisselberg committed perjury while testifying in Trump's New York fraud trial, Weisselberg entered a guilty plea to perjury for his testimony in Trump's New York fraud trial. He was sentenced to serve 5 additional months in prison to the time he served previously.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Do we see a pattern?

I think it would make a difference if there were a hard conviction related to the January 6th events and attempting to defraud the election (or if the Senate had grown a pair and done the needful).

Even with that, I thought for sure there would be at least one to break from the rest. We have a very partisan (right leaning) SCOTUS and to stand out against it would at least put some doubt in peoples minds. But for it to be unanimous, that is the part that surprised me.

The fact that they so narrowly defined the question and focused almost exclusively on the remedy considerations. as opposed to the actual intent of the Amendment (you know, creating an eligibility requirement that no insurrectionists should be able to hold office), tells us that they were INTENT on making a showing of unanimity. Keep in mind SCOTUS has never gotten lower poll numbers than they've had following the Dobbs decision. Their credibility is up against the ropes at the moment, what better way of improving that than making a show of unanimity. Well, apart from maybe Thomas recusing himself when the Court deals with the question of Trump on Jan 6 after all the shit his own wife pulled.
