NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Political Discussion Thread

Meg Ryan?!?!!? :D:D:D

I'm past all the SA allegations, partying in HS (& beyond), whiteman rage, political tactics. If he lied under oath, that should be what makes the confirmation decision easy as a 'NO' vote (not that that little issue mattered in some other confirmation hearings for secretary appointments).

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but the president sure is pushing hard on this one, and based on what senator Sasse said, this leads me to believe BK will be key on any type of impeachment or charges levied against him based on the Russia investigation. FYI would be not surprised either way on Brett's nomination getting approved or denied. Either or, Trump's base has been energized for the midterms. Maybe he was just a pawn this entire time?

Joe Manchin, what a loser. He knows Patrick Morrisey is right on his heels, and has been using this nomination and subsequent vote as a weapon against Manchin, primarily on Neil Cauvto's show. Oh well, Dems could never count on Manchin to begin with, not in an election year.

I think I'd like to retract that post. The more I thought about it, the more I believe his yes vote was the right way to go. I'm sure he did so under the direction of the party as well. A vote against Kavanaugh would have tanked his re-election and put a die hard Republican pro Trump supporter into the Senate. West Virginia is hardly a democratic state anyways. When you're electing a Dem there, you're just electing the least conservative of all the conservatives. His vote didn't matter in the slightest anyways, Kavanaugh would have been confirmed without it.

I was in a lunch meeting were a couple of people were discussing the appointment and someone made a very interesting comment. First of all, this person is a registered democrat and campaigned locally for Hillary in the last election, so I was surprised by his comment.

He stated that he is disgusted with this nomination, but is he more disgusted with the process that they just went though. He said that one of the cornerstones of our free society is that one is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but it is a concept that is almost never applied. He commented that the skeletons in the closet should have been fully vetted by both parties far earlier in the process, as in before his past appointments. He questions where Dr. Ford and the other accusers were during the past appointments. He said that while he totally disagrees with Kavanaugh's political agenda, he said that he has yet to hear enough evidence to make a personal opinion that he was guilty and that he was ashamed of his fellow democrats for parading her around in attempt to win political points instead of bringing Kavanaugh to justice. He also thinks that we are not being told the whole truth and that the investigation was not complete. But instead of trying to find the truth, both sides amped up political agendas and while he was appointed, we don't know if an innocent man was wrongfully punished or a guilty man got away with it.

It got me thinking a bit more about the Me Too movement and justice. Do we still live in a society where one is presumed innocent until proven guilty? How do we balance the need for justice of those accused with their rights? How do we empower people who have been assaulted to come forward much sooner without victomizing them?

Is this a discussion you seriously want to have in earnest? Or are you hoping you can toss it out there and no one will touch it with a 10 foot pole and it won't go anywhere anytime soon?

Because that's a super tough conversation to have.

If you ask a room full of American women if they have been raped, some percentage of hands go up. If you then ask that same room full of women if they ever said "No" and ended up having sex anyway, a lot more hands go up.

This is typically used as evidence that rape is rampant and men are all rapey bastards and all need to be hung high.

The reality is that the definition of rape hinges on the detail of consent and there are people who have rape fantasies because we live in a world where saying "Yes" and choosing to get your needs met makes you a whore if you are female and a terrible scumbag of some sort if you are male. We have BDSM clubs probably because of all the societal baggage we are inculcated with that some people just can't escape psychologically while trying to get their freak on and most "First time sex" (for this specific couple -- I don't mean loss of virginity per se) involves drinking alcohol to lower inhibitions so that people raised with Puritan guilt can get their needs met at all.

And you could argue that it isn't genuinely consenting if she was drunk. You could argue that constitutes rape right there and some people make that argument. Meanwhile, if I try to tell women "Don't drink" under certain circumstances, I'm accused of blaming the victim and told women should be allowed to be falling down drunk and left the hell alone, which fails entirely to address the issue of "If she is getting toasted so she can manage to say yes to sex and get her needs met, where do we draw the line there on legal consent?"

Furthermore, this presumes that men are the initiator, women only exist to service men and don't have sexual needs of their own and sex is solely about meeting his needs. It presumes men cannot be taken advantage of. It presumes a whole lot of things that frame women as perpetual victims and men as perpetual abusers and all heterosexual sex as inherently somehow some man treating some woman abusively.

I'm happy to dig around in the subject if you want. But an awful lot of people accuse me of being a rape apologist and don't actually want to hear anything I think about the topic.

I think that it is a conversation that we should all be having because avoiding it does not make the problem go away. I also think that there are no easy answers. As a father of 3 sons, I think that it is an important conversation to have with them to make sure that they are respectful and treat woman appropriately. I also think that there needs to be a better understanding of the cultural issues and how to correct them and recognize that there are people who are guilty and people who are innocent and people who are make claims to gain attention and those who stay silent to avoid attention.

As for our question if people will speak up, I hope so. But that is not my call to make.

I still believe her.

I also believe he may well have been so drunk as to not remember it the next morning. Or, at the very least, to have repressed the memory such that he was honestly in denial.

I feel bad for his young daughters, who will bear this luggage, undeservedly, for a long time to come.

I believe her, I see no reason why anyone in her position, with her family background, would derail her entire life unless it was completely legitimate. Her life is completely and irreparably ruined and she will never get back to the normalcy she once had.

I agree. I think he has a very foggy idea of the event, but he knows something happened. I think his daughters will struggle with it for a while, but I suspect that as they get older, they'll realize who their father really is. People with these kinds of allegations generally have a certain personality about them that would be easy to pick up on behind closed doors and in personal settings.

We are right on the brink of the innocent until proven guilty/guilty until innocent switch, but sexual assault and rape are very different than other allegations. False accusations are incredibly rare, and in many cases are completely obvious to outside experts.

I taught my sons from birth that hugs and kisses had to be mutually consenting.

People have these ideas that rape is something violent and dramatic that starts with dragging a woman somewhere by her hair. The reality is it almost always begins with disrespect, rudeness and consistent but small boundary violation. If that never starts, the odds are really poor that rape can happen.

A lot goes wrong well before it becomes rape. It's much easier to stop it at those stages, but most people don't want to hear that because they feel that warning women how to protect themselves in the future is the same as justification for rape in the past.

Interestingly, his wife Ashley is a public official, town manager in their little burg, pop. about 700.

Nikki Haley resigned today. That seems very sudden and completely out of the blue right? I don't altogether dislike her.

Nikki Haley resigned today. That seems very sudden and completely out of the blue right? I don't altogether dislike her.

I often disagree with her politically, but I do think she is exceptionally smart and has been one of the few within the administration to directly oppose Trump on certain issues (though she also supports elements I strongly disagree with). She's not as sycophantic as others in the administration.

And now rumor mill is running saying Ivanka will be the next UN Ambassador, citing:

Jared & Ivanka want to return to NYC
She was discussed as a replacement a year ago if Haley took Sec of State job

PLEASE NO!!!

I'll do you one worse....US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Lindsey Graham.

And I agree that I disagree with many of Haley's positions, but I think she's mostly a good person and generally speaks her mind and defends those positions well.

Wow Kanye. Holy cow. I mean... does anyone else feel like our world is just weird now?

Care to clue some of clueless types as to what you are talking about?

Kanye had a special meeting with pResident tRump (while Michael was pounding the ever-loving shit out of Mexico Beach). Kanye was his typical outrageous shelf saying all sorts of rambling weird stuff.

announced that he had been misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was actually merely sleep deprived.

What's his current explanation for his on-going crazy behavior? Is he still "sleep deprived"? or did he get over that already?

This is like friendship porn or something. Or friendship gorn even.

If you make friends with the right rich people who know the prez, they can get you pardoned. But I'm not hearing anything that suggests we are actually reforming our prison-industrial complex in a meaningful way.

He should just go ahead and blow the guy on camera for all the world to see just so we are all clear what the meaning is. Then explain how he isn't gay or bisexual, he's merely showing his respects.

I heard that CNN's coverage of Kanye West meeting with Donald Trump was beyond inappropriate. While I don't like either Trump or Kanye, I am curious why there is not a backlash against CNN the way that it has been with conservative networks making inappropriate comments about democrats. On a side note, I think it is wrong that Trump just appointed conservative judges to the 9th without input of the CA Senators and Representatives.

Personally, I would love to see both sides fight it out as I sit back with a box of popcorn to watch the fireworks.

I am getting so sick of the R vs D crap on Facebook. Two friends starting going at it regarding this and that. The irony is in both cases the reasons to be against the other person's party would also apply to their party as well. I really hope that people look deeper than the letter behind the name when they go vote this fall. I can tell you right now that there will be a D that will be getting my vote in one of the races because for that position, he is the better candidate. The opposite is true for a different race.

What are your thoughts? Do we live in a hyper sensitive culture right now or is this woman an exception by wrongfully accusing a 9 year old boy? Do you think that race played a roll in the situation or was it simply because of the recent discussions regarding assault?

(CNN LINK)

A white woman derisively labeled "Cornerstore Caroline" on social media has apologized after video of her appearing to call New York police to say a 9-year-old black boy grabbed her behind was posted online.

I mean I just watched a video taken on a small boat that had 3 gray whales swimming under it. Someone on the boat was concerned enough to want to call 911 about it. So yeah, one could say there's a bit of hyper sensitivity going around.

I can just see the cartoon of a whale in handcuffs.

She knew exactly what she was doing. She lives in Brooklyn which is half non-white and not living under a rock. Video footage clearly shows that the boys backpack brushed up against her backside as he walked by while she was at the cashier. NYPD has no record of a 911 call from her so it was all for show. There was a video of her giving a no-assed apology.

Our societal boundaries about some things are being reset. That tends to be messy. Some people will genuinely be confused about where to draw the line. Others will happily take advantage of the confusion for purposes of their own.

From the brief amount I've heard, this well-known Saudi journalist was lured into the Saudi consulate in Turkey where he was "interrogated" by the Saudi state intelligence agency and then later his body was chopped up into little pieces.

He wasn't necessarily "lured", he was coming to get marriage paperwork, he was supposed to marry a Turkish resident. I guess the Saudis seized upon that opportunity.

It's clear now that there was no "interrogation". It was death by vivisection, in that they dismembered him on a table in the consulate's study while he was ALIVE. This is clear from the audio recording the Turks have obtained. Apparently he was injected with an unknown substance that stopped him from screaming, but there's a lot of doubt that the injection killed him, it most likely kept him alive as long as possible (probably epinephrine).

IMO, the Saudis knew that the consulate was bugged, and did everything on purpose. This was a clear signal to other journalists who dare to besmirch Prince Salman. Give it maybe another month, and this event will be largely forgotten. Saudi Arabia is one of the single most powerful countries in the entire world. They can operate with relative impunity from any outside sources, especially the US. Their insistence on using the USD as the sole currency for oil sales pretty much leaves us beholden to them. Without that, the USD loses a TON of value. The UN Human Rights Council can do little to reign them in. In short, none of this really matters.

Trump doesn't understand the subtleties of foreign diplomacy. He's not supposed to defend the Saudis, he's supposed to be publicly upset and denounce the regime while calling them on the phone and assuring them "we okay dude, keep doing you!".

Don’t Vote for a Uniform, Vote for a Candidate
https://www.wsj.com/articles/dont-vote-for-a-uniform-vote-for-a-candidate-1539964834

First, look for someone whose service made him or her more humble about the world, rather than more certain.

Also search for evidence that the candidate you’re thinking of supporting would reach across the aisle.

Finally, seek veteran candidates who run not on the general patriotism implied by military service but on specific, hard-earned values that shape their policy priorities.

...as with any other candidate, don’t just give them your vote—make them earn it.

So reading the whole "false flag democrat hoax pipe bomb" comments.. and this is the dude's van they caught in suspicion of sending the pipe bombs.

Something sounds a little off with all of this. You have a total lunatic who built these devices and none of them went off, and there appears to be an undeniable trail of evidence to convict him. The timing of it all just before a significant midterm election sees to spacific to be a coincidence. I am not saying that he did not do it, but something just smells fishy.

Not normally a conspiracy theorist, but yeah I definitely agree. Just seems very odd. The van was absolutely bonkers. It's interesting that members of the press and random folks had already taken pictures of the van weeks prior because of how "suspicious" it looked. None of the bombs going off is pretty suspect too, seems intentional, as though they weren't meant to kill or maim, they were specifically intended to shock and scare.

Not to add fuel to the fire, but if this dude was a convicted felon, how can he register to vote in FL ? Asking for a friend

Those are individual state rights I think...

Plus did this guy ever vote or did he just lust over tRump?

So Trump wants to do away with citizenship by birth for kids who are born here of illegal parents. While I understand that this was not the intent of the 14th Amendment, I still think that this is wrong. However I do think that we need to do a better job of securing our boards and eliminating the red tape it takes to be a citizen. We have the ability to have a much better system for people to come to the US, but it does not seem to be on either parties radar.

With everything going on with politicians, I am super frustrated right now. I don't think that things would be any better if Hillary was elected either. Until people demand better instead of just picking an R or a D, things will continue to get worse.

However I do think that we need to do a better job of securing our boards and eliminating the red tape it takes to be a citizen.

Legal immigration needs to be incentivized. It shouldn't be a thing where people are afraid of the process or cannot afford it. For many people, coming here is the last desperation option, to get out of countries where they cannot progress and cannot protect their families or make themselves better.

Illegal immigrants live under the constant threat of expulsion from this country. Many pay taxes, hold good jobs, and contribute to our society, but if they get caught, no one cares. Their blood equity is worthless. Imagine driving with your friend and you get pulled over for a simple speeding ticket. The cop makes a note that your passenger is Hispanic, and decides to look a little more into their identity. Surprise, they're here illegally, and then BOOM, they are gone. This happens, it's real. It's shameful and disgusting. We are a country built by immigrants, and that shouldn't be forgotten.

In the long run, fixing the immigration issue, both by simplifying the process and removing financial barriers, will SAVE the country money in enforcement costs, insane border walls, and high tech border protection measures. The vast majority of people don't want to enter illegally, they are driven to do so by a broken ineffective system.

All this, however, xenophobia runs very high here in the States. It's rather disheartening.
