NEVERENDING ♾️ The NEVERENDING Gas Price Thread

Driving by the gas station this morning, maybe I was not seeing something correctly, but it looked like the price of gas jumped a whole dollar a gallon from the day before. Can that be right? Anyone?

Any big news event I missed?
So I drove by again at lunch at the dollar a gallon jump appeared to have been incorrect.

Our pumps are ranging between $2.75 -2.99 right now. It looks like no one wants to drop the "3" yet.

From what I understand the prices are due to higher global demand, spring break, Middle East conflicts, and beginning the transition to summer fuels. But I really feel like its the oil companies thinking they can just get more. I'm always suspicious of pricing jumps in presidential years, but that's probably just my latent paranoia.

$2.99 regular at WM. Across the highway at Holiday is typically 20+ cents higher. Lowest we hit a few months ago was $2.59 but did not last long.

I paid $2.83 today.

If you look at the first post in this thread by @kms over 20 years ago she paid $1.63. So if you do the math that's about a 74% increase in 20 years. Of course there have been times it's been much, much higher than today. I have no real point to make here, I just felt like doing some math!

In case you want to do more math, the price here is $3.55.

It's 3.29 in Breezewood.

I paid $2.99 with credit card a couple of days ago. Cash price was $2.89. (Toledo)

Speaking of gas prices, does anyone use Gasbuddy? They changed their site last month, making it much more difficult to search prices by gas station and all around harder to navigate. All the points charts and consecutive days charts were eliminated. Some stations are now selling in the mid 2.70s which I certainly didn't expect this early in the year. A year ago prices were averaging over $3.60/gallon.

You people suck. I'm paying like $3.45

I have a Costco down the street and easily accessible.

We pretty much just go there and I think the price was $3.29/gal this past weekend.

Though, generally, I don't really pay attention as gas is an effective necessity for our current lifestyle and built environment.

How much tax does your county have? I think its under $3 out here and a bit cheaper in Wisconsin.

It's Cook County...so alot? ;)

But it's in the next suburb over from the one I live in and I don't know the total applicable taxes in that muni (county sales, local sales, motor fuel, etc, etc.)

But I normally only drive about 16 miles around trip through portions of three suburbs during the workweek, so I only have to fillup about every 2 weeks or so...even driving my V-8 RWD 2002 Lincoln Towncar.

For 87, $4.459 at the gas station near my house--$2.979 at the gas station near my work. Guess where I go?
That is a HUGE difference! What causes the spread.

Fun fact in my region there is basically one fuel distributor for all the gas stations and you can only get outside that system by going to Costco. Said distributor sued in Environmental Court to block Costco from opening their pumps (well, at first sued over wetland protection /concerns/ that seemed suspicious and later shifted to "traffic") thus depriving us of any competition until years after the pumps were completed. Article's from 2016 but I think it's only been in the past two years the pumps have been allowed to be open at all business hours (earlier they were shut off during peak traffic).

I live in Storey County, which has two gas stations, neither of which particularly convenient to me.
The gas station nearest my house is in Washoe County, which has a HUGE gas tax to fund road and transit.
I work in Lyon County, which has no additional gas tax, and a lower cost of living overall.

I try to fill up on Friday before the weekend, but if I ever do need gas on a weekend, I go to Safeway and use my grocery points to get gas down to about the $3.359 or so range.

There is a Costco in Reno, but because of my aforementioned anxiety disorder and the way the station is laid out, I can't go there for gas because I feel trapped. Plus, the wait is an hour long, and time has value.

My dad bragged about $1.79 gas in Denver....

In WA I'm paying $3.79 (OR is about the same) .... when I was in Seattle two weeks ago, I filled a rental car at $4.59....

I believe Oregon finally adopted self-service fueling, leaving NJ as the sole holdout.

They finally figured out people don't blow themselves up pumping gas on a regular basis.

County tax? This east coaster can hear Dillon's laugh echo through our Green Mountains...

Yep, self serve fuel now, although I have seen some gas stations with the full service option still.

I will say that, a number of years ago, I went to a Costco in New Jersey and saw the most efficient fueling set up with the team there. Well managed, with a touch of Jersey attitude. Often though that model could have been used during the drive up vaccinations during Covid.

This aligns with my wife's thoughts. You need it so no worries about price. Well, I still like to pay the the lowest I can. We usually fill up at WalMart as we save 10 cents per gallon with their program and pay via QR code so no skimming risk. Used to buy Costco but reg. or prem. is only available. Our cars are supposed to use mid (that is a conversation for another thread) so we do even through I will fill with reg. if the price becomes too high for me.

I watched A League of Their Own last night - worked in a theater summer '92 then that movie was out. And when I watch movies I like to look up trivia and errors on IMDB. One that was pointed out was when Dottie and her husband initially left Illinois to drive to Oregon, their car had the "A" placard for fuel rationing, which, according to the comment, allowed 4 gallons of gas per week. They headed home and turned around at Yellowstone. Never would have happened on 4 gallons per week in a 1928 Ford Model A, or any car of today.

And I wish the use of 9/10 of a cent would be made illegal.

Cash price here yesterday was $2.699. I fill up my little Mazda about once a month, but I'd gotten a little farther below 1/4 tank than I usually do, so it was $25 to fill, with 403 mile range posted on the fuel monitor.

I also wish the 9/10 of a cent would go the way of the one cent coin.

We can get down to $2.24 with discounts at Murphy/Walmart. Buccees and the other low cost gas stations are at $2.33. I argue with my wife that its not worth my time to drive to out of the way to $0.10 a gallon or $1.40 if I fill up completely.
