If you must drink distilled alcohol straight with no mixers, no water or other diluting agents, which do you find most pleasant or at a minimum least unpalatable?

I'm in for a good whiskey. Brandy is also acceptable, but I don't drink much of it.

I'm a beer and wine guy, so take that into account. When I was in Brussels years ago, we went to an establishment right off the main square called the Rhumerie, if my memory isn't too sopped by booze. The proprietor was a complete dead-ringer for Jerry Garcia and he stops by our table to verify that we are there to learn about/enjoy rum, and not to get annoyingly drunk on rum. Satisfied, he sets himself down with samplers for all in our party and he leads us through each of the eight (or so) shot glasses before us. I'm a stupid American that has only been exposed to mass-market American crap. Holy smokes - in this guys hands, rum is delicious! And also intoxicating, as that's about the most I can remember of that Fourth of July 1989.

So, yeah, I voted rum!

If I had to, I'd probably go for a smooth whiskey or bourbon.

I swore off whiskey for about 30 years after a bad experience with Jack in college. Eventually I went back to it with a more adult approach. Yeah, 'salright.

I don't drink much "straight" alcohol at all but I had a friend several years ago introduce me to truly good tequila which is meant to be sipped so I'll do that once in a while.

Whiskey.. neat... especially after an atrocious planning commission or design review meeting.

Some Scotch single malts taste just like honey to me. Not a stickler for this or that brand.

Whiskey and tequila (añejo or extra añejo) are best straight.

Akvavit is my poison of choice. Used to keep a bottle in the fridge until I discovered Junior was hitting it hard.

Whiskey or brandy are probably the easiest. I enjoy gin the most, but do not drink it straight. Honorable mention to amaretto, that's an easy one to drink straight, but I get this poll is more about spirits than liqueurs.

My Danish host Dad when I studied in Denmark brought a bottle to a picnic and we had to (according to him) let it sit in the sun for awhile to warm up "so you really get all the flavor, Faust.." I liked picnics with my Danish host family!

In my family, Akvavit is always consumed freezing cold, with a chaser of Tuborg Gron (the non-export Tuborg).

Some old habits die hard...

CARIBAYA COCONUT RUM! 24% ABV and super sweetened, so you can drink it like hose water if you have a full stomach! NOT something I can drink regularly, nor would I recommend to. But I treat myself to a bottle (that is usually shared) maybe twice a year, around the Holidays and in the summer around July 4th.

$5-6 per pint. Commonly found at a "select" caliber of liquor stores found north of 96th Street and in most of Queens ;)

CocoRibe or Malibu were my coconut liqueurs of choice back in the day.
