Hi everyone,

I'm beginning my grad school applications for a master’s in Urban/City/Regional Planning and could really use some guidance.

A bit about me: I have a bachelor’s degree in Architecture with a good GPA that meets the minimum requirements for the schools I’m interested in. My undergraduate thesis is solid, and I’ve done well on the IELTS. I also have a strong writing background, with several articles published online, as well as internships focused on research and writing. On top of that, I have a few papers completed that are currently in the process of being submitted for review for publication.

I’m targeting Fall 2025, and from what I’ve seen, most universities have waived the GRE for that cycle. However, after researching on platforms like Quora, Facebook, and Reddit, some people suggest that the GRE is still important for securing fully funded RA positions, which is crucial for me as an international student needing financial support.

So, my question is: Should I take the GRE to increase my chances of landing funding, or should I focus more on strengthening other aspects of my application like my SOP, recommendation letters, and portfolio?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insights!

I just applied to a slew of graduate programs and I did not take the GRE. I was able to find funding opportunities pretty easily. Honestly, I think your est bet would be focusing on your SOP and portfolio.
