My wife was watching the new episode of Medium entitled "Will the Real Fred Rovick Please Stand Up" that aired last evening (Friday, February 5, 2010). I was on the computer (i.e. not watching the showt), but I heard at least two references to "the City Planning Department" within the first 15 minutes. The guy that "the Medium" keeps seeing a guys face and this guy had a meeting with the City Planning Department. Body found near a housing development. The show is set in Phoenix, AZ. :)

I know there's a thread already dedicated to "planning on TV" or something of that nature, but I couldn't find it with a search of the forums; so feel free to relocate this post to that thread.

Chalk up another for Planning, baby!

Maybe CBS is the only network aware of planners. I always got a kick out of the father on Numb3rs being a city planner. The show isn't as good as it was the first couple of seasons so I haven't been watching it much lately. But I do remember an episode where a park the father designed and fought for had become run-down and he was upset about it. I think the math genius son came up with some formula to show why it didn't work. If only it was that easy.

In the cartoon Frosty Returns, the sequel to Frosty the Snowman, the little girl who is the main character is arguing with her mother and says the immortal line, "I don't wanna be a princess! I wanna be an urban planner!"

This thread made me think of this past winter when I was visiting family in New Zealand. One night I was surfing through some channels and came across a UK reality TV show about planning! I couldn't believe it. Even though it was the dullest show ever, I had to keep watching the entire episode because I was so fascinated that someone would make a show about city codes and zoning.

I guess there is already another thread discussing the series if you are interested in the details: http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29903

In the TV show New Amsterdam (The cop show, not the doctor show) the main character and his partner are walking through the Brooklyn and she askes why the buildings are all 4 stories tall. He responds by explaining that it was because of the water pressure provided by the aqueduct. When she askes him "What are you an engineer?" he responds "No, a City Planner."
