As we welcome in a new year, we sadly say "goodbye" to an old friend and with the grin that made slackers famous, we welcome a new friend. :-D

The RANDOM THOUGHTS THREAD has been part of our lives for many a post. The thread has given us reason to laugh, made us cry, once in a while encouraged a wink or two. Even though tagged with a RANDOM line, the thread was often not so "random". Cyburbians used it to test the waters on a thought and would, once in a while, create a thread with a central theme first posted on the Random Thread.

The original Random Thread will be quietly laid to rest. The ideas, thoughts, observations, complaints, shouts of joy, exclamations of disgust.....they will still be in the archived files. But we all know that time makes us forget, and there are many things that were shared in the original thread that time will HELP us forget. :-D

As we begin to fill this new (and exciting! :p ) thread with our "randoms", let's take a moment to thank all of those who contributed to the original thread. But more importantly.....let's roll out the red Cyburbian carpet for "newbies" and others to join us. We look forward to a better world

And for more of a good start to the new year, the hospital uploaded my test results to the portal. My wife translated them to tell me that everything is clean, no issues with the heart, surrounding vascular, or any blockages. Very little plaque and the little there is, is stable.

Granted I haven’t spoken with the doctor, but the wife has been reading these for 15 years and understands what the results mean.

Good morning. Who else is working today? I couldn't see wasting a vacation day in the first week of the year if I didn't have anything vacation-worthy to do. My work at home schedule is 6:00 - 2:30 and I have a doctor appointment this afternoon, so it will work out to be a little more than half a day at work.

If you can do it, i recommend working 6:00 - 2:30. The first four hours go by quickly.

I'm at work today. In the office, too.

Too new to take a vacation day, but seasoned enough to suck it up and be on time to the office.

haha. I am the opposite, why waste with work when it could be a vacation day. 😁

Friday, in the office, and January 2. I suspect, no, know with my many years, that today will be a dead day which is nice to get a few reports done and plans reviewed.

NYE was quiet in the household. Mrs. was too tired to stay up so I tried, and failed. Youngest (19) and several of his friends decided to take my generator, a few guitars/amps and his drums and go out to someone's property, play and have a bonfire. Well, the sheriff and fire department paid them a visit. They were trespassed that night but the owner dropped charges yesterday. One of the kid's father knows the owner. Several went back last night to apologize and take in a gift. Said they are welcome to come back if they ask and that he has power to the area they were at. Sounds like a good guy. They do have to go back this morning to do come clean up/service work to make amends.

I came in a little late and will leave a little early, but working today. Most of our staff is in. Our deadline fell on New Years Eve so everyone is trying to go through the process of checking apps and logging stuff in. Its also a great day to catch up on some projects.

Slow day in the office today, as expected. Need to help the city attorney draft a reply to a ridiculous complaint (even I, a non-lawyer, know there's a bunch of stuff in it that does not belong), and respond to some emails from over the holiday. Will probably haul down the tree and take it to the county recycling spot over the weekend.

I'm working today and like KMS, cannot see wasting a vacation day on the first week. I can see on Outlook though that it appears like there are 4 of us, out of ~60, who are working today (or at least who haven't turned off our out of office auto replies).

Usually I use the first few days of the new year to clean my office and catch up on anything that didn't get taken cane of while I was off basically the entire month of December. I'm WFH today though so it's even more quiet than normal.

I went to the club this morning to lift and I was tempted to go back at lunchtime to go for a run on the treadmill and maybe get in the pool for a bit (that's a nice benefit of living about 4 minutes from the club) but it was getting crazy busy when I left around 8:00 a.m. so I think I'll skip that.

I think I just have to do the HR meeting and counsel my employee today. Fun start of the year. Other than that, nothing.

Rather annoyed that the local paper randomly decided to change the pub date of my ads from 12-31-25 to 1-2-26. I ordered them last week, well before the deadline, and was assured of the 12-31-25 run date. I even got written confirmation of such.

Luckily, running them today still meets the statutory guidelines for noticing (10 calendar days before the 1-14 meeting), but I wish they would run with the dates I pick.

I am in the office, but got in late. Very quiet. Fog has settled around the edges of the valley (well, both valleys that I traverse each day) and it's making the world seem.....disconnected. At least to me. I get that vague feeling that none of this is real. I got off the bus and looked across the street at my office building and thought "Do I really work there? If I go in, will there be any people?"

What if we're in the Upside Down? And just, nobody wants to admit it to ourselves. I'm going to require something to cheer me up, and since I don't drink, not sure what that's gonna be. :)

How about another dream of mine?

This time I was an undercover agent trying to evade bad guys. Lots of double and triple crossing (including stuffing a uniform full of T-shirts to trick someone) and at one point my contact signalled me by standing like a mannequin in a department window display.

You like to go shopping in stealth mode but are afraid someone might recognize you?

That one gives serious "Series of Unfortunate Events" vibes....I like! :)

I’m working today after being off since Christmas. It’s been mostly quiet. Not too many emails to catch up on as others took off as well. I enjoyed my time off and I spent a few days in Nashville with my oldest while my youngest went to winter camp.

Our newly hired staff attorney’s offer letter went out today, she’ll start on the 12th and that’s going to be a major load off of me and my co-manager.

Got word that my agency’s existing commissioner has been asked to remain in her position by the incoming governor which is an incredible relief. Business will continue without delays since we’re in the middle of issuing contracts.
