The show "What Would You Do?" filmed at a local casino and at a local boutique here in Reno last week. Now that the filming is over, I can announce it. For obvious reasons, couldn't say anything before production wrapped.

Yours Truly was not involved in the show in any way, but it's still neat since they don't usually film out west. Funny thing is that I had told my wife a few years ago that "If they ever were to film in Reno--which they won't--I can see them filming at Junkee's".

And, that's exactly where they filmed, along with the Atlantis Casino down the street from there.

Well...I was all of 13 yrs old in Fall of 1991 and still fairly formative. I could be molded....but I was merely watching my older brother (1992 HS grad) transition from a GnR November Rain devotee into sporting a Pearl Jam tee and growing out his hair shoulder length.

I got the privilege of graduating HS in 1996 with Cake's Fashion Nugget and Sublime's Wrong Way...and the popular peak of 3rd Wave SKA.

I upgraded my phone this afternoon from an iPhone 8 that I've had for like 8 or 9 years to an iPhone 16... there is definitely a learning curve!

Well...I was all of 13 yrs old in Fall of 1991 and still fairly formative. I could be molded....but I was merely watching my older brother (1992 HS grad) transition from a GnR November Rain devotee into sporting a Pearl Jam tee and growing out his hair shoulder length.

Class of '96 represent!

I'm the youngest of 5 and there is nearly a 13 year age gap between me and my oldest brother. The sibling closest in age to me was in the class of '93 and I remember when I was really young she was big into Poison and Ratt and Cinderella and Bon Jovi and stuff like that (she also loved Milli Vanilli and I have memories of her crying when we found out they were frauds) and then she discovered Nirvana and Soundgarden and NIN and RATM and it was like a 180º turn in the kind of music I had to listen to in her car or around the house.

It's sort of funny looking back on it - Van Halen and Aerosmith were still putting out stuff, we were only a few years removed from the heights of the "good" hair, etc. but the only heavier rock band that wasn't at least loosely associated with grunge that I can recall my peers still being really into by the time we were finishing high school was Metalica. In my freshman year of college I think I played Third Eye Blind self-titled album, Dave Matthews Band's Under the Table and Dreaming, and Whatever and Ever Amen from Ben Folds Five enough that I was afraid I'd wear those CDs out. Those seem like a pretty big leap from the Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and Alice in Chains I was listening to primarily a year before (though I didn't give those up by any stretch) and worlds away from what my sister was listening to.

In the spirit of all that, let's bring it all back together with Lou Barlow (of Dinosaur Jr./Folk Implosion/Sebadoh fame) covering some Ratt!

I had an 8+ and got a 16+. They appear to be the same size in terms of length and width but the 16+ "appears" to be a mm or two thicker. I put "appears" in quotes because when I set them on a flat surface side by side , I think they're actually the same size (or close enough to it for me) but the 16 comes off as thicker because the edges aren't nearly as tapered or beveled as the edges on the 8 are (if that makes any sense).

My wife has an 8 (not the + version) and I asked at the store about the size of the non-plus 16 v the 8 and the lady said they are pretty comparable too, just like my 8+ compared to the 16+.

The screens on the 16 go all the way to the edges and the top and bottom so there is no home button across the bottom or speaker and camera across the top taking up screen real estate (we'll they're still there, but the screen just wraps around them) so that really makes the screen look a lot bigger and longer.

I used to go a long time between phones - I think I had a samsung phone for 4.5 years and an Iphone for 5 before. While I enjoyed the money savings, I realize that fighting with the issues of an older phone just is not worth it, so I'm not at a similar interval.

My phone did everything I needed it to even though it had a cracked screen and just recently started showing a weird light glowing in one corner (I think the LEDs were probably damaged thanks to the cracked screen + me taking it into the steam room one too many times) and I would have kept it longer but I somehow damaged the charging port and it had a hard time connecting a charging cable and even when one would connect, it would often stop charging at even the slightest bump or jostle. I was tired of waking up to a phone that had 3% battery life (oh, plus when not actively charging, the battery would drain really fast).

This is what it was like when I visited my in-laws in the hamlet of Cropseyville in the town of Brunswick, NY. I'd drive my father-in-law down to the Stewarts Shop and we'd get coffee. It was one of the last trips he was allowed to make by himself when the dementia started to set in. When I was there, though, he'd ask if I wanted to go and he'd let me drive. (Now he's in dementia care and doesn't go out anymore.)

Last time I was up there (this summer), I made the trip for coffee myself. I saw these old Goats in the parking lot:

Two nights ago I had parked outside overnight and when my daughter got in my Jeep in the morning she complained about how cold it was in there... she wasn't wrong. Then she complained after her walk home from school because she was too hot in her jeans and light sweater.

As soon as my daughter is out of the car, the front windows go down. I love driving with the windows down in the cool crisp fall weather.

Went up north to Flagstaff so my wife could see trees changing color. It was kind of sad. I just couldn't tell her before hand that it's a pine forest and there won't be a lot of other trees. Still had fun, and 70 degrees is a lot nicer to hang out in than 110.

I was never a hair metal band fan. Nirvana and other bands total changed rock for the better. I don't consider GnR a hair metal band. They were straight up rock.

I remember seeing the timeline a few years ago of those albums all coming out so close to each other and being sort of blown away when I learned that.

There were a couple other really influential albums that fall in that timeline:

Cypress Hill's self-titled debut, which I would argue sort of kicked-off the rap/rock genre without being rap/rock themselves (yet), came out August 12th (the same day as the Metallica album) and The Low End Theory from A Tribe Called Quest came out on September 24th (the same day as Nevermind) and that is often credited with pushing the boundaries for rap and hip-hop beyond the hardcore and gangsta rap that was so prevalent and bringing a lot more innovative hip-hop to much wider audiences.

I used to love riding "into town" and sitting at the table with all of the old farmers and listen to them gossip. They were way worse than old ladies at the hair salon. The gas station was bought out by a nice Indian couple. The food and coffee got a ton better even though they still cooked mainly breakfast staples and a meat and three at lunch. The old farmers started selling out and the liars club moved to a new Hardees. Most of the old timers that I knew are gone. Now the town I grew up in incorporated and is bougie. The gas station is there, but I think the city made them clad the metal building in brick and their sign can only be two colors.

About 30 years ago, I was asked to be a reference for my old college roommate's security clearance. He had, let's say, a unique sense of humor and after answering most of the questions innocently enough, I was asked if Rick had anything in his past that could be used to embarrass or blackmail him. Inspired his humor, I thought a minute and said,

Well, this one time we were all out drinking, and we came across this llama. Rick was pretty drunk and well, it was a girl llama and all... and.... well.... Actually I shouldn't say any more; I could get in just as much trouble as he could.

The interviewer's eyes went wide as I made that statement and he asked, "Are you kidding me?!?!!" And I said, "All the way, pal. But I would expect him to tell similar stories about me; he has that kind of a sense of humor."

The interviewer busted out laughing. Rick was denied his clearance.*
