that reminds me, years ago, my husband was working on the roof garden design for a building in Cambridge and the contractor used to call the house at 0 dark thirty and I'd answer and he'd say "tell your husband to get his spidey suit on and get up here!" in the most rough Boston accent you can drum up and it always made me laugh

My oldest is going to DC for an 8th grade trip for a few days tomorrow. She has to be at the school at 2;30 a.m. to catch their bus to the airport.
I did similar for a senior trip to DC. Bess the chaperons that had to keep a bunch of high school kids there and back. They didn't get enough for that trip.

Why am I the one asking about insurance costs for the budget person in finance? I'm just going to ask our risk management guy in finance. You literally sit closer to him than I do. I'm not even in the same building.

Been there many times. When my girls got into high school my wife ended up chaperoning 2 band/choir trips to NYC, one to Orlando/Disney and one to Chicago. I couldn't think of a worse thing in the world than chaperoning kids on trips lol

The full moon is about 48 hours away yet, but my spidey sense is telling me I'm going to have my hands full with a subdivision pulling nimby's to tonight's planning commission meeting.:femalenimby::malenimby:

I strongly agree with this observation.

The room was packed last night and quite uncomfortably hot, which might have tamped down the crazies a little bit. I doubt I'll be invited to any neighborhood parties out there any time soon, though.

That's how I feel, especially with middle schoolers. Thankfully, for the DC trip, they didn't solicit chaperones. They have enough teachers in the middle school who only teach 8th grade that they can get most of the chaperones they need from that cohort and then the supplement with some of the coaches, para professionals, etc. I remember somebody asking about parent chaperones during an informational meeting last spring (before we paid for this years trip) and the organizer said they have had so many teachers and staff volunteering over the years that they hadn't had to ask for parents in at least a decade.

However... last Friday she had a band trip to Cedar Point and they did need parent chaperones for that one. I "threatened" to volunteer because I knew it would irk my daughter and while I love Cedar Point, I didn't want to go with a bunch of middle schoolers. I never volunteered but told my wife I would if they sent around another email because they didn't get enough volunteers initially. (Unfortunately?) That never happened so I didn't go with the kids. A few days before the trip though I was looking at some of the rides online and was really wanting to go again (I haven't been there since the summer before our oldest started kindergarten) and I was telling a buddy of mine and he really likes roller coasters too so we were planning to just take ourselves down there for the day. He ended up getting sent out to Palo Alto for work at the last minute though so we had to cancel. The 8th graders are going back to Cedar Point in a couple weeks so maybe will try again then.

The fun of rollercoasters! Sometimes you just need to go.

Take a random Tuesday off in the summer. Take the kid & one of their friends to ride rollercoasters. It's worth it. I can tell you.

We've put a day on the calendar to go down in mid-September after the schools go back. When I was a kid, we'd usually go a couple times a year - once before Memorial Day and once after Labor Day. The crowds are tiny compared to just about any day in the summer.

What time is the flight? Hope they got a good deal to mess everyone's sleep up like that.

They're flight was at 5:something and they landed just a couple minutes after 7:00 a.m. I think the schedule change probably messes with the parents dropping them off more than the kids. Kids are pretty resilient that way. My wife and I both got up with her this morning to get her something to eat and see her off but I stayed home with the 2nd grader while my wife drove her to the school. I set my alarm for 1:30, 1:40, 1:45, and 1:50 a.m. to make sure there were a bunch set so I wouldn't risk sleeping through them (plus my wife set the actual alarm clock). I got up and got my daughter going and she was pretty good this morning. I was back in bed just after 2:00 a.m. right after they left the house (they weren't planning to leave until about 2:15 a.m. but the daughter was moving quick and anxious to go). I woke up again without an alarm around 5:00 a.m., which is when I usually get up to go to the gym, and I immediately started panicking that we had slept through getting our daughter to the school. For a couple minutes I had absolutely no recollection of waking her up, putting her luggage in the car, getting her some food, etc.

May 22 and my wife turned on the furnace; thermostat said 69 in the house. Why does, say, 70 degrees with the furnace on and 70 degrees with the a/c on feel completely different? Besides hot/cold air?

It depends on where you live. I live in the deep part of the Deep South. It's pretty humid here thanks to the Gulf. It's a damp cold so it feels cold at higher temps. You also acclimate the longer you live in a place.

Our heat pumps go a little stir crazy this time of year with a little heat needed at night and cooling during the day and yeah, for different temperatures!

I chaperoned many band trips including 2 to NYC, 2 to Disney, Boston, Dallas, and several to Chicago. I always thought, "just get them home in one piece."

Once I failed as a kid lost a finger from a cab door in Central Park.

Hope they didn't play a woodwind instrument.

(sorry, that was in bad taste for the kid who lost a finger, but I couldn't resist and at least you didn't lose the whole kid)

Honestly, we only get the RGJ on Sundays anyway (and even then, it's barely worth reading) . . . But we do get the W$J Monday through Saturday, delivered by the same carrier. I am not sure how that is going to work now--will that come via postal service as well?

Can't say I'm surprised. Unlike the days of my covering 100 houses on my bike, traveling less than two miles, back in 1988-89, our carrier lives miles away and has a sprawling route for probably not even that many houses. (We live in a rural area.)

As it is, the RGJ is printed over the mountain in Chico, California two days before its printed publication date.

Have not had a Cig since February. I have gotten to the point where it feels more abnormal and gross than it used to be. When the thought crossed my mind last week during finals to buy a pack, my body told me "nah F that" and I stayed true.

When I hand in my second to last final ever tomorrow, I will go and get myself a nice Cigar. Maybe a La Flor Dominicana Ligero (the double ligero is too much for me) or a Perdomo champaigne. @DVD got any recommendations? Ive been out of the game for a minute and like medium bodied, earthy tasting sticks from Nicaragua/Honduras.

There is a small population of black bears in my area and there has been for quite some time The bears are good about not being an issue, however, every time someone spots one and posts about it on social media, folks goes bananas. They make it out that they are going to kill every thing in it's path. It's silly to read peoples comments.

Bears are tough. Kings of the forest indeed. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a bear's wrath. More importantly, wouldn't the Wrathful Bears be a decent band name?

I'm not an expert, but thought this was good: https://www.dreamsofcubacigars.com/product-page/toro-6x52-closed-foot-in-newspaper

They don't write 'em like this anymore:

Maybe that's not entirely a bad thing?

Last year, we were camping at Tahoe when bears decided to come out en masse and attack coolers. Luckily, all ours were put away so our campsite was skipped.

This is wonderful country and very similar in appearance to my hometown MI region 2 hours south of Mackinaw along US-23.

The Bridge is a really awesome piece of major infrastructure.
