RTDNTOTO 🐻 Random Thoughts Deserving No Thread Of Their Own 19 (2024)

AIB the "Five Things" thread discussion about @dandy_warhol 's probable Scandinavian Death Metal proclivities (yes, proclivities): My son Shane likes to listen to a Swedish band called "Sabaton" that ONLY sings original songs about......historic battles. Run, don't walk, to check them out. When I asked him for a best pick, he texted back "I thought you'd never ask!" He suggests "The Last Stand" or "Lost Battalion." I can confirm, they rock hard. Shane says "Crank it if you can!"

The Huashan Trail, also known as the "Heavenly Stairs" or the "Death-Defying Trail," is a renowned hiking trail located on Mount Huashan in Shaanxi Province, China.

Does it look like Sports Illustrated is ending publication after 70 years?
Layoffs, contracts pulled, & license revoked.
I don't know that I really care, as I have seen one since the late 90's; but I feel like I have to ask... Will there be a 2024 Swimsuit Issue?

I never really liked SI as a publication. It seemed like they posted the most obvious, mass-appeal articles. Just about every other publications seemed to be more in depth. To me it was what the name implied: glossy pictures and nothing more.

They have a song called 'Devil Dogs', which is about a famous WW1 battle fought at Belleau Wood by the USMC where they acquired the nickname 'devil dogs' from the Germans.

I remember Junior kvetching about how 'boring and weird' his middle school history teacher was. One day driving past his middle school, I saw a group of middle school students led by this very teacher arranged in what I recognized to be a Greek phalanx formation walking around the parking lot holding push brooms in place of spears! This same teacher constructed a quarter scale trebuchet and used to launch pumpkins over the football field. I would have given my eye teeth to have a history teacher that 'boring and weird.'

The single mom across the street is now shacking up with her squeeze and her oldest son (+/- 26YO) is living in the house with a couple of friends. I'd bet my bottom dollar one of the roommates is dealing drugs, given unknown vehicles pull up, out the kid comes, over to the driver, something is handed between them and the kid quickly walks back in the house, car pulls away. Twenty, thirty seconds, tops.

What am I going to do about it, is what I'd like to know.

Obviously report a violation of the home occupation standards.

I'm supposed to be updating and preparing my report for the development review meeting in........one hour. I hate Monday morning so bad. Who schedules development review meeting on Monday mornings? I'll tell you who, not the planner that has to prep the info, that's who.

It's too bad, but you missed some of the best writing in America while SI was in the Time family. I've missed SI for a few years now, after new ownership acquired it and fired some really outstanding journalists. It's a shame.

Spent 9 hrs today finishing up a certification. Now just have to apply, be approved, study, and test for another huge certification and I can be doing with professional development for awhile.

Another thread got me thinking about unusual businesses we've seen in our careers. For me, I think the most unusual was a drug-sniffing dog rental where a concerned parent could rent a sniffer dog to see if junior is stashing weed under his mattress or what-have-you. Owner/operator was ex-Mil (and maybe the pooches were, too) who seemed to not have registered that he wasn't in the service any more. Predictably, it closed after a few short months, even with all the money he spent on sign permits.

Ever get unusual food cravings? I have one now for marshmallow Peeps - you know those sugar coated marshmallows shaped like baby chicks you only find on sale around Easter - but the thing is, I'm not even fond of them.

Maybe you're.....pregnant, idk. There is no legitimate reason to eat peeps when it is not Easter morning or a random Tuesday when you find one under the couch.

People say that, but I always thought the writing was too self-aggrandizing.

(apologies in advance to anyone who was hoping for something actually insightful here)

My wife is already making plans for what we're going to serve at our Super Bowl party. I had to tell her to not get ahead of herself... though I definitely like to still dream.

I'm making Buffalo Chicken Cheese Dip, Poscuitto Sliders & Nacho Bar while Mrs. P is making White Chicken Chili. Guests will bring stuff too.

The winners if this weekend's games will determine if I have people over, or will run the gambit of emotions by myself that were on display on Saturday. While typing this, I thought damn, RJ would have likely texted me after the game and we would have gone down the drunk text rabbit hole. I miss that dude.

My kids have never been to an Olive Garden but my youngest saw a commercial for the chain yesterday and was especially intrigued by the breadsticks. My wife says she's been talking about Olive Garden breadsticks all morning. I guess a trip to the OG should be on our agenda soon.

We took our kids out to the Olive Garden on Saturday. Menu was smaller than I remember. Food wasn't terrible (but definitely not worth the price of the entrees), service was excellent, and I even let my kids order desserts. My youngest loves ravioli and spaghetti and was excited to see that she could get ravioli as her entree and spaghetti as her side. Let them do that carbo-loading! I don't think I heard a single complaint from my 13-year-old all evening and as we were walking back to the car, my youngest told us it was the best night of her life. All in all, it was a win.

Smart Ass Warning -
Classic Cyburbian answer would be hooker & blow ?
This is true, however, most places would want to you to fill out a w9, and it might be difficult to do that if being paid in "merchandise." Better method would be to determine an hourly rate that would allow for the purchase of said merchandise in the required quantities along with sufficient overhead to cover incidentals.

Want to come off as a drooling, gap toothed, ignorant moron? Just write "should of" instead of "should have." Doing this one simple thing will help sell it big time. You should of been doing this a long time ago.

Depends on the context. In a formal correspondence, yeah you're right. But on social media? I realize that a lot of people just let their fingers type what they're thinking and that's how it's pronounced so I try not to let my pedantic nature judge too harshly.

Yes, but who even THINKS 'should of' such that one's fingers would be in a position to just type it? That's like saying one could type 'I ain't got no use for no book larnin' because that's what they're thinking and it's therefore acceptable. No, we pedants must stick to our guns and be consistently unforgiving.

We have two training centers for dogs. One is just explosives and the other does all sorts of smells. I got into an argument with the explosives guy because he was trying to get ATF approval for an explosives locker across the street from our 1.5 M square foot retail center. Luckily he found a nice location in an almost empty industrial park.

That's brilliant about renting the dogs out to sniff kids rooms. I know a few parents who would definitely pay for that. I also know a few parents who would be worried the dog would find their stash.

I full well know it's "should have" and yet sometimes my fingers type "should of". I usually catch it right away but I can see it slipping through for some people. I constantly type the wrong there/their/they're and have to go back and correct it. Sometimes you'll see that on posts here and then I edit the post because I don't want the rest of the pedants on this forum jumping all over it.

I might could agree with you thar.
